Seriously, what do you think?
A lot of the attitude I see from the immigrants is that they feel like they have the right to be here. And while I have nothing against immigration in general or people who want a better life for themselves, I have a problem with the idea of them sneaking in here and feeling owed resources that belong to Americans. One article I read had this illegal complaining about how she couldn't get financial aid because of her status. You're illegal, fuckwit! Federal financial aid is for Americans! Become a citizen first.
This is an interesting subject that the University of Texas here has been debating about. While I agree that I dislike something glorifying border rats, it was erected in 1996. No point in making a stink about it now.

“Just because someone’s family crossed [in] the wrong way doesn’t mean it should be a statue,” Morales said. “My family crossed legally, but I don’t see a statue about that.”
Yesterday, I saw a group of highschools doing a small walkout. Frankly, they were so trashy-looking I wouldn't have minded if they ended up deported.
And I don't think illegals should be prosecuted like criminals. What about the people that hire them? Nor do I like the idea of Berlin Wall 2 in the form of a giant ugly fence.

In 1983, I was a judge at the Terlingua Chili Cookoff, and my memory of the events may not be perfect. Anyway, it was '83 or right around there when we held The Fence climbing contest. See, people talked about building The Fence back then, too. The Fence along the Mexican border. To keep Them out.
At the time, the proposal was specific - a 17-foot cyclone fence with bob wire at the top. So a test fence was built at Terlingua, and the First-Ever Terlingua Memorial Over, Under or Through Mexican Fence Climbing Contest took place. Prize: a case of Lone Star beer. Winning time: 30 seconds.
I tell this story to make the one single point about the border and immigration we know to be true: The Fence will not work. No fence will work. The Great darn Wall of China will not work. Do not build a fence. They will come anyway. Over, under or through.
-
Yeah...those Damn Canadians should stay on their side of the border.
But seriously...I do think the punishment should fall on those that hire them instead of the people that cross. They are giving them the jobs, and that is the reason they crossed the border. You eliminate the jobs for illegals by handing stiff penalties and prison time to those that employ them and they'll stop coming cause the jobs will dry up. That is where the problem originates, so by arresting and shipping back illegasl you are really trying to treat a broken bone with a Band-Aid. It's just not going to work in the long run.
My biggest pet peeve is the fact that I'm expected to learn Spanish because they won't learn English. What the fuck.... I didn't cross the border illegally why the hell should I be punished? I wouldn't move to France and then not even try to learn French. Seriously, you are in America now and our official language is English...so learn it.
-
First of all I think we should all stop using guns and go back to using swords.
I think a few dead children carved up while trying to illeagally cross would send the proper message. Or at least start a riot the likes of which has never been seen in these modern times (and there would be sword play aplenty).
A glorious battle would ensue and I would be there cutting a bloody swathe through the enemy line in the name of 'merica.

As odd as it sounds, there a quite a few illegals who want to play by the rules as much as possible, so they set themselves up as sole proprietorships, get a business tax ID and give Uncle Sam a chunk of their earnings every quarter. Fine by me. If there's any moving to the front of the line for legal citizenship, they should be the ones to go. And yes, learning English should be a requirement. Learning another language won't erase anyone's identity or whatever the lame excuse d'jour is, but it will make it possible for someone to get a better job and make more money, which was the whole point of crossing illegally anyway.
If the employer crackdown occurs, I predict fines and whatnot for certain types of corporations that hire illegals, but winking at others. I also seriously doubt they'll go after individuals, though the notion of some of my clients washing a dish or caring for their own children would be a hoot. :P
-
Weren't we about to start throwing illegals in prison but then it got shot down? That would be wicked awesome because you know if the situation was reversed that's exactly what they'd do to us.
-
I've always been fairly ambivelent about the whole thing since I live way up in the north here. My attitude was basically "Yeah, they shouldn't be here, but wat's the big deal?" Lately though, I've been doing more research on it (from as non-biassed of sources as I can find) and have come down firmly against it. I'm all for immigration -- the vast majority of us are descended from immigrants who came here and conquered the continent -- but I'm all for documented, legal immigration. The porous border represents not only an economical drain, but a defense issue.
Most importantly: Fine the companies and individuals that hire them. Take away the financial attractiveness of the situation.
Strictly enforce a no-welfare, no free-health-care policy for anyone in the country illegally. Harsh, yes, but it makes coming into the country legally look a lot better.
Increase border patrols. Obviously this isn't a solution in and of itself, but it would help.
The recent protests in LA really pissed me off. Most notably, the fact that the Mexican flags in the crowds outnumbered the US flags. Let me get this straight, you're protesting because you want to be treated like American citizens...and you're waving the falg of a foriegn country? Makes it seem more like an invasion (to borrow a redneck reactionary word) than anything else.
-
I support the idea of building sniper towers every few thousand feet and shooting anybody who crosses the border line outside a checkpoint.
-
The US has no official language.
-

I agree, that is insulting.
My biggest pet peeve is the fact that I'm expected to learn Spanish because they won't learn English.
Mine is that I'm expected to know Spanish because of my surname. And getting pieces of mail that aren't at least billingual. I've had people running for office here send me mail completely in Spanish and when I go to polls, I purposely vote against them because it infuriates me so much.
I'm at least third generation in this country, if not more. My parents never taught me the language and I don't want to learn it all that much to be honest. (Both of them have made it clear that they themselves "don't know it", which is a bunch of horseshit because they can still get by in a Spanish-speaking environment just fine.) I wasn't raised in no frickin' barrio either, though you could say I live in it now though.
And I'm sorry, but this makes me ill:

English first eh?
I like it.
-
.org! Just like pbs.org!
-
I hate the euphamism "undocumented immigrants."
They're "illegal aliens." The euphamism buries the fact that what is happening is illegal.
-
Bank robbers are just making an undocumented withdrawl.
-
Not that we have any room to talk regarding honesty in government, but if President Fox had come anywhere near to keeping his "Million New Jobs" campaign promise....<_<
-
I don't care who it is or why they're here, but coming into this country illegally is criminal activity. Another term for "illegal immigration" is "invasion", and while the people doing this aren't carrying weapons or even intending to have that effect, it's manifesting itself in this odd pride that some have of the fact that they are here illegally. And those who are suborning this illegal activity should suffer the consequences, as well, and probably more so.
Dealing with illegal aliens themselves is only putting a bandaid on a bullet wound...the gun needs to be taken away from the assholes doing the shooting instead of throwing the spent rounds that happened to be caught back to the source. Everyone from the jackasses hiring these folks as tree planters to the big corporations getting them for custodial work should pay for their irresponsibility.

All right then! Launch zee nukeleear veapons!
These people wouldn't be willing to come over here so much if this country didn't look so attractive, and their countries didn't suck so much.
We need to ditch the celebraties, perferably by firing squad, get rid of this notion of this crap country being the "best place in the world and the land of oppertunity and easy money that grows on trees," and also deal with these other countries so they don't suck so much.
I'd recommend we invade them all and make them our new states, but that's just me. :D
Also, I'm 4th-5th generation German but only 2nd generation southern, I don't speak a word of deutch but have a bit of a drawl. But I still have that urge to conquer, pillage, rape and destroy that all Germans have in their blood.
Edit: also, O SHI- serious debate!
-
Snipers? Anybody?
-
I have no problem with them as long as it is not my job their after.
-
No, you just get to pay to school their children. And dealing with the influx of people who think you should automatically speak Spanish.
-
Just gotta love those deer in headlight looks when you actually do say something to them in english.

Rubble rubble, ese!
People who put espanol options in automated call handling only contribute to this. This is not and shouldn't have to be a bilinqual nation. Get with the program or get out. Illegal aliens who've been here long enough to "establish residence" should also have been here long enough to file immigration papers and learn the language.
As I said, it's tantamount to an invasion, and the ones happy about it are Vicente Fox, fellow illegals, MEChA, the big corporate interests, politicians courting their votes, and the Catholic church.
-
Even the Commies let the Germans keep speaking German.
-
Ha ha, they're having massive "rallies". I don't know what's sadder, the illegals protesting, or all the other dumb legal hispanics who are supporting them as if this immagration bill is anti-hispanic or something. "OMG, the white man is discriminating against us, let's rise together and fight hispanic brothers!"
I think we need a lot of tanks and bulldozers in there Tinanmen-square style. Or napalm. Let's see how willing they'll be to protest when they're being slaughtered like sheep.
-
What a great plan. I just don't see how that could ever go wrong. No, Sir.
-
wait a sec...D might be onto something here...
THE USA GOES HEEL!
It's still the Old World Order but with 17% more evil!
-
Up for a little proactivity? :D
Everyone who is upset about the number of illegal immigrants in the country should begin writing his/her congressional representatives. Don't prattle on about security and scofflaws and protests - they watch the news. Plainly state that as a consumer, you will not mind or won't care that the increased price of hiring legal workers as opposed to illegal ones will be passed on to you.
An illegal employee does not receive any of the following:
*Minimum wage, either as salary or compensation for the balance after tips up to minimum
*Overtime pay
*In Texas, they do not receive workers comp. Texas is the only state without a mandatory workers comp law, so employers here can offer a higher wage and be choosy since WC insurance is elective.
*social security contributions
*unemployment
In addition, legal employees will rarely work without one or more of the following:
*Paid sick time and/or vacation
*Health insurance
*Retirement plan
Now if you as an employer are paying an illegal immigrant $3 an hour to pick lettuce or shingle roofs or bus tables and figure your business expenses and profit margin based on that expenditure for labor, then suddenly have to provide all of the mandatories above, plus pay minimum wage and probably throw in a perk or two and your labor expense per employee increases to $15-20 an hour, you're going to be a good flag-waving American and take it up the ass, right?
Unless you are drunk on the heady wine of patriotism or in business for fun, you, dear employer, are going to pass your increased expenses on TO THE CONSUMER. Citing prior examples, meat and produce will be costlier to get to market, home repairs will increase (and that includes apartment rent - the landlord probably won't fix things for free) and prices in restaurants from McDonalds to Maxim's will go up. The consumer will more likely than not ultimately blame the government and may react accordingly in the next election. Also, there are thousands upon thousands of children of illegals born here. That makes them US citizens with the right to VOTE, and they are starting to get rather vocal about the prospect of their families being broken up. Bit of a sticky wicket, hmm?
With a great deal of the economy based on cheap illegal labor, changing that dynamic will take time and a certain amount of sacrifice on the part of the consumer, so if you feel strongly about the issue, get the ball rolling by assuring the elected officials who feel as you do that you're prepared to make those sacrifices. If they feel certain that their constituents who want nothing to do with an illegal immigrant-fueled economy in any way will outnumber the opposition and keep them in office, they will vote in turn to pass the laws you collectively want.
-
Dear Sir and/or Madam Congressman,
They can sneak over to pick my fruit they just need to stay out of school.
Sincerely,
The Masked Voter.
-
We should just gather them all up in camp, make them pick out fruit for free and then when we are done with them gas them all. I don't think there is any president for that being wrong, so it must be right!
-
Talk about your protests....
Dear Congressional bitches,
Fuck a Mexico. Show our welfare dependents some love! They're already being paid, so indenture them.
Sincerely,
TDS
Of course, if immigration reform was complemented with tax reform, the impact on business wouldn't be as bad. But they're doing nothing about either issue. But if a business has to survive on illegal labor, then survival of the fittest comes into play. We've survived much worse in the past.

I wish to whip Mexicans and exclaim that their names are "Tobey"...
-
If only I had the guns Mr Tweed I'd shoot each and every one of them before they set foot on American soil.

Then who would pick your fruit? Big picture, all-star, big picture!

Well, I'll tell you how I'd do it...
*WHIP*
"YOUR NAME IS TOBEY!"
Yeah...yeah...that's how I'd do it...
-
Then who would pick your fruit? Big picture, all-star, big picture!
damn it...I guess we'd just have to make fruit picking a legitimate trade and pay a solid wage to Americans to do it. Sure the price of strawberries would go up but I can live with it.
-
Well, I'll tell you how I'd do it...
*WHIP*
"YOUR NAME IS TOBEY!"
Yeah...yeah...that's how I'd do it...
It's just not the same if it's not Levar Burton. I think it's the whole Star Trek/ Reading Rainbow thing that makes it funny.

Shut up, Tobey.
-
You....You would whip Geordi?
-
Hell yeah!
Align the warp core now bitch! *Whip*

Lidia Bastianich made some tasty looking stuffed quail but there's something about having to cram the homemade stuffing in the dead quail asses that made me not want to cook it. I dunno, like, even dead they were so little and cute I'd feel bad about cooking it. Not so much about eating it because it did look delicious.
