Title: No more anime rentals
Post by: The D on Mar 23, 2006, 05:38:39 PM
There's a local anime store that had just about every anime video in existance for rental. Or at least it did. In the middle of Elfen Lied they stopped getting new DVDs. I thought that was odd so I asked them what happened. They said they weren't getting any new series anymore. I asked if they had run out of room, but they said that DVDs were getting damaged and it wasn't profitable anymore.

First off, I'm not sure what they mean by damaged. If they mean scraches, they need to get a fucking Disk Doctor. Even video rental stores use Disk Doctor. Second, if they wouldn't rent the videos for $1.50 and rent them for more, they might make more money. Third, they should at least finish collecting the series that they only have part of, so I can finish Elfen Lied.

Since they're being stupid, I have to figure out a new way of getting anime. Luckily the local Hollywood Video has a pretty big selection, but they're $2.99 a video? There's always NetFlix, but I would say I'd have to rent 3-4 videos a month with HV's price, or 7 videos a month at the anime store's price, in order for it to be worth paying the $10 a month.

Looks that way.....but he could also be asking US if Hollywood video cost per rental is $2.99. Which I don't have a fucking clue...we got a Blockbuster and Movie Gallery and a couple local stores, no Hollywoods.

You know, if you liked Elfen Lied so much, you could, I dunno...actually BUY the series?

Which reminds me, I have yet to watch the final volume of that show.  It kind of got put on the back burner when I realized it was shitty and that I was just finishing it for the sake of completion.

At my old neighborhood there was one (and a Blockbuster as well) about a mile's walk up the road with a semi-decent selection.  I loved walking there and the surrounding area was pretty nice, if not sadly on the decline.

The nearest video place to me now is not only much farther, the neighborhood is frickin' barrio-ville, so I sure as hell ain't walking anywhere.  Since getting the dish, I've been training myself to be content with that and the occassional pay-per-view order.

After the days of buying so much anime it came out of my ass, I now buy nothing and much of my old collection (primarily of cassettes) was given away.  The interest is no longer there and I don't want to spend the money.  I don't think I've bought any anime in about two years.

I used to do that when I had DSL in college, but my dialup at home is 24.6kbps.  WAY too slow to download anything of consequence.  Besides, all I'd do is reformat the videos and burn them onto a DVD to watch on the TV, so Netflix is far more convenient as the authoring is already done for me and comes with menus and all languages/subs.  And if the series is good enough, I'll buy it.  But the only ones I've actually gotten following that paradigm was Azumanga Daioh and Rune Soldier.

I'm stuck on dialup too. I could download stuff at school, but I'm not sure what the school's policy on P2P is. It's harder to find old series on bittorrent, and they might revoke my student account if they find me using some P2P program.

As for the price issue, I said that if renting anime wasn't profitable for the anime store, they should raise the price to make it profitable. I wouldn't like it that much, but it wouldn't stop me from renting, I'd just rent less.

But, if they'd just use a disk repair tool, fine people who break the disks, or consider raising the rental fee or extending the rental time from 1 day to 3-5 days, they wouldn't have this problem. Do I have to think of everything?

Youtube's nice, if someone bothered to upload the episodes, but they take a long time to download from. I wonder if Google video.....

Gankutsuou has the wierdest intro.

And yet people still find a way around it (http://youtube.com/results?search=gankutsuou&search_type=search_videos)   B)  Which is good for me, because I've been wanting to see this series for a while now. Lots of revenge, backstabbing, violence, giant robots, and homoeroticism (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7xz5YXwjAsw&search=gankutsuou)  all in one anime. The only bad thing is I've already read the books so the anime has very little surprises for me.  <_<

It seems it may also be possible to use file sharing at school. Before I came here today, the school computer I sat down at had a full hard drive. I found the hard drive stuffed with shitty Yahoo games, bitcomet, limewire, morpheus, and 10 gigs of downloaded shit that I promptly deleted.

Starting my own chain of anime stores with rentals sounds like a great idea, there's not enough of them in this world. Too bad I have no money or motivation or this might be successful.

I liked 1...Hated 2 (mainly cause I read the book before I saw the movie. Sure fire way to hate a movie. Hollywood always fucks up books to movies. There are rare expections, but for the most part they fuck it up.) and I'm indifferent about 3.

I liked 1.  I didn't care for the kids that much either, but Dr. Grant and some of the others shared enough scenes with them to make them tolerable.  Wayne Knight's death is a classic and who can forget the old "Mr. Arnold?  Oh thank goodness--  AAARGH!!".  I can't count the times I've made fun of that one in some way.

When the girl started doing damn gymnastics in 2, I knew it was over.  That and the fact that I didn't think Mr. Malcolm was into teh chocolate.  There were some good parts, just not enough of them.

3 was somewhat enjoyable, though I was somewhat annoyed by the kid.  And that duder who stole the egg reminded me of Strafe.  I'll also remember 3 because Merla and I saw it on opening day.  We were running late and it was soooo crowded in the theater.  The guy was like "It's nearly full, are you sure?" and kept wasting our time with those sort of questions.  The minute I paid and my tickets popped up, I snatched them and left.

I have no idea what to think of 4.  Does it still involve intelligent dinosaurs or was that just a baseless rumor?

The chick from 2 will come back & teach the raptors gymnastics.  They'll form the new Olympic team and inspire the nation by cutting off their tails in a show of solidarity after one team member is drugged and has her tail amputated by an evil rival coach.  They win the gold all-around medal and the movie closes with them bounding around the stadium wrapped in the flag and a close-up of the evil coach smirking  on a plane with the tail packed in dry ice at her feet....

Yeah unless it's a screening or something and you know someone responsible for the movie is there I don't see the point of clapping. I've done it at film festivals for just that reason but that's a whole different issue.

I found myself cheering, clapping, etc. several times in the past.  Usually it's at opening day showings of big sci-fi movies like the St*r WarzzZZ prequals.  THere's something cathartic about letting your reactions out like that when you're in a room full of people that are really into it.

Sounds more like a punishment to me.

The theater closest to me now doesn't even have fucking matinees.  Their earliest showings are like at 1 in the afternoon.  What's the point of that?  If they had ten o'clock showings, I would probably go every Monday.  I'm surprised too because they're in the heart of downtown, but I guess the tourists would rather see our green river than go watch an early movie.

The next theater I can think of shows mainly artsy-fartsy limited run stuff, which is okay with me except a lot of it usually lasts about a week and is gone by the time I hear it was showing here.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just went to the anime store to rent Berserk only to find out they've stopped renting anime altogether!! Gah! Where the hell am I supposed to get cheap anime now?!

All the anime they once rented they're selling. It's hard to decide whether to buy something from the store or not... DVDs are $12 and VHS is $7. To me that seems too expensive, but it may be just me, but I swear I've seen VHS as low as $2 at cons. This makes buying longer series, which may go over $100, seem stupid. Plus all the good selection seems to have gone.

I do have my eye on Slayers on VHS (I think they sold the DVDs already.. but if not :3), Trigun on VHS, Rahxephon on DVD... but most of that I'd be paying $60-90 which seems insane to pay that much for USED, PREVIOUSLY RENTED AND PROBABLY SCRATCHED MATERIAL. No wonder the anime store might go out of business, their shit's too expensive.

Also, I hope these aren't frauds, but it seems cheaper on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Rahxephon-Complete-TV-...1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.com/Rahxephon-Complete-TV-Series-Eng-Dub-DVD_W0QQitemZ6051701075QQcategoryZ1345QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Those are  bootlegs. Their quality will vary depending on the source. Some are ripped from region 1 DVDs and are perfect quality. some that were released before a good proper release was made are TV source and pretty bad. Subtitles, when not ripped from an official release, are more often that not ranging somewhere from bad to unwatcheable.

"Suiseiseki" I said softly, caressing her face. Her cheeks were as bright as her right eye. Her eyes were gazing into mine.

"What are you doing, Chibi Human? Stop this at once, desu~!" But her eyes said yes. In a flash I swooped down and swept her off the floor. She pushed at me with her delicate doll arms, but I would not be denied. I lay her down on my bed, pinning her arms down. She put up a token show of resistance and looked away, blushing. I bent down and begin to nibble at her ear.

"Stop it, desu~! You're a baka!"

I pulled my head up, and gazed into her beautiful face. "You're very Kawaii when you're angry. Yes, I am a baka, Suiseiseki. A baka for not realizing my feelings sooner. I love you, Suiseiseki. I can't live without you. I must take you, now!"

I saw her eyes begin to water with happiness. She smiled, and I sat up so she could stand up on the bed. "Then.. you're okay loving someone with a body like mine, desu~?"

I laughed. "Suiseiseki, I don't care about that. I don't care about you becoming Alice, becoming a real girl. I just want you, like you are now."

A tear ran down her face, and she smiled. "Thank you, Chibi Human." And with that she began to undress. She took off her headdress and set it aside. She blushed at me, and then let slip her dress. My mouth began to water. She pulled her undergarments over her head. I let my eyes drink in her body. The soft curve of the porcelain, the delicately crafted joints, the well-baked doll ass, her 5-inch dong, the slender... uh, the slender... wha, er, DONG!!!??? NO, ER, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAA!!!!

I once saw End of Evangelion as an imported chinese bootleg. The subtitles were almost entirely unreadable.
the funny thing is that due to my color blindness both of her eyes are the same color to me.
Then how do you know that they're a different colour?

Get your broom boy. SHENANIGANS!
Oh shit!

Out of these anime what should I buy?  Out of what they have left in the store, these seemed the most interesting.

Seen:
Kite (more than likely... mmm violence)
Vampire Hunter D (original, for some odd reason I remember not liking it that much)
X the movie (Same here... felt it was too short)
Battle Angel (liked this one, but the ending was too depressing)

Haven't seen:
Blackjack Movie (or the TV series but I could get that cheaper online)
A Chinese Ghost Story
My Youth in Arcadia (The Harlock movie)
Harlock Saga
Grave of the Fireflies
Wings of Honneamise
Jin-Roh
Sakura Diaries
Sakura Taisen (Wars) OVA collection
Super Atragon
Once upon a Time (Butchered from Windara, so probably not)
Sin
Those Who Hunt for Elves

(*wonders if he should go back to his account now...*)

I just hated Kite so much I can't describe it.

I thought Battle Angel was amazing and rewatch it often. Check out the manga if you enjoy the stuff you  see in the OAVs.

I also enjoyed Grave of the Fireflies though I haven't gotten myself to watch it a second time. It's pretty intense subject matter.

Blackjack Movie - Never seen it.
A Chinese Ghost Story - Ditto.
My Youth in Arcadia (The Harlock movie) - Ditto.
Harlock Saga - I haven't seen Herlock since Galaxy Express 999....
Grave of the Fireflies - I have it, but haven't brought myself to watch it yet.
Wings of Honneamise - Not the "OMGLOLBBQ" anime everybody makes it out to be, but it's pretty enjoyable.  DVD picture isn't that great (early Manga Entertainment release), but the animation is quality old school.
Jin-Roh - Never watched it
Sakura Diaries - Cute, if you like your leads as love-struck (and incestuous) idiots...if you get it, I hope it's the new version that came out last year.
Sakura Taisen (Wars) OVA collection - I have this on Netflix right now.  The movie's animation looks awesome if you go by previews.
Super Atragon - I've heard it's fun, but I couldn't say.  Never watched it.
Once upon a Time (Butchered from Windara, so probably not) - Never heard of it.
Sin - Never watched it.
Those Who Hunt for Elves - This is actually a title I've wanted to see for quite a while.  The thinpak box set just came out, but I hear conflicting reports as to it's worthiness, and Netflix doesn't have all the volumes.

Grave of the Fireflies is a movie I've been too afraid to watch, I just think it sounds too depressing and emo. Especially since you know from the beginning of the movie that the two kids are going to starve to death.

ZOMG SPOILERS!

A Chinese Ghost Story was cute.

Those Who Hunt Elves used to be a favorite series of mine a while back, prompting me to name my stuffed green frog Junpei.  Some parts just have real lol moments.  I used to have the whole first series on tape, but I don't think that's one of the ones I kept when we moved.  I didn't even bother with the second one, because by the end of the first one, the concept already appeared to be getting stale.

Jin-Roh was meh.  It wasn't bad.  Not my cup of tea.

Anyway, I don't recall little girls getting raped in any of those, so I can't recommend them to D.

OH yeah anything by Leiji Matsumoto (Arcadia of my Youth, Harlock, GE 999...) is awesome. I just wish there were enough hours in the day and dollars in my wallet to watch all that stuff but there are a large number of 50+ episode series based on his works I've barelly even heard of not to mention the retarded lack of GE 999 movies on DVD.

Yes, how every single Jew in creation is a greedy cheap so-and-so.  Just like every white guy is rich and scared of all other races, black folks are big-dicked and steal televisions, Asians cannot differentiate btw r's and l's and know kung-fu, Arabs are all turban-wearing head loppers, and Indians all live on reservations and welfare.
