Title: David Copperfield
Post by: The D on Mar 20, 2006, 05:07:20 PM
My mother's a Copperfield fangirl so goes almost every year to his magic shows and drags me along, like she did Sunday.

Having gone to so many shows, I have come to realize that this guy doesn't have any new material, but reuses his old tricks from show to show. This is confirmed after my mother bought a DVD of his old stunts after the show. I was seeing tricks I had seen recently from shows when he still had a mullet. At first he would rotate tricks so that each show would have at least half of them different than the previous show, but over the past few years he's been doing mostly the same tricks over and over.

For instance, every show he does several different tricks. One of them involves a duck he calls Webster. Another trick involves picking 13 random people from the audience and making them disappear and reappear. The third trick involves making someone disappear and reappear on an island.

This third trick invovles someone pre-selected before the show. It's always a young adult, who hasn't seen an older family member in years, who always wanted to go somewhere but never could. The place these people want to go is ALWAYS an island. Each show, the island is different (once it was Hawaii, another time near Australia, another time in the Carabbean), however, the island looks the same every time, with the same mountain in the background, and the same fucking palm tree sitting right there. "Live satelite footage of the island" is broadcast on a projector screen. David takes a picture of some audience members, takes the guy onto a platform over the audience, puts a sheet over them, and they're on the island. The person runs out onto the beach, splashes in the water, shows the poloroid of the audience, and then suddenly meets his long lost family member on the beach. Emo tear. David reappears among the audience.

I just find it crazy that he only does the same tricks all the time. Especially this trick where it's always a guy meeting his family member on a fucking beach that always looks the same! Where the hell is the disappearing statues and trains and shit?

I don't care unless he makes something disappear, like the White House. Until then he's become stale cookies.

No, he can't take David Blaine!  I was gonna attach razor blades to the fronts of his and Criss Angel's shoes and have them fight to the death.

What if Blaine wins? Huh? Then what? Are you willing to take that risk?

Don't be stupid, they would obviously kill each other.  It's the perfect fucking plan, chief.

Not sure, but he was engaged to Claudia Schiffer for 6 years.

Random Copperfield facts:

- Copperfield is not his real name. He was born David Seth Kotkin.

- He's Jewish.

- He's from New Jersey.

- During the 80's he had all sorts of bizzare looks, once he had his hair puffed out and looked like Roy from Sigfreid and Roy, another time he had a sweater and haircut that made him look like Bob Saget, and he also wore a mullet.

- This site claims to tell how he made the Statue of Liberty disappear. (http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mliberty.html)

Say what?  What about one of the homos sitting closest to the tower hiding the statue?  They wouldn't be able to see anything?  And wouldn't someone see the stage turning?

Nothings perfect. There is always room of error.....Better have a sharp shooter ready just in case. You can't let any of them get to surface you hear me! THEY CAN'T GET TO THE SURFACE! or that's it....Game over man, game over.

The difference between David Copperfield and David Blane, is that David actually can perform magic tricks.   Anyone ever notice that every time they air those David Blane specials, we rarely see a single trick being performed?  95% of the time, it's reaction shots from onlookers, trying to give us the impression that something cool had happened, when, in reality, nothing happened at all.

Anyway... yes... David re-uses the same tricks over and over, I'm sure.  But then... magicians have been doing the same tricks for hundreds of years now.   If it's not a rabbit, it's a duck.  If it's not a duck, it's a blue bird.   If it's not a blue bird, it's an eagle.  If it's not the cubs and balls, it's the shell and nuts.  And if it's not the shell and nuts, it's the card and coins.   Whether it's a space shuttle, an elephant, a car, or group of 13 people that vanish when the mirrors come out... it's all still the same thing, so why be surprised?

Remember in the mid 90s when Valentino, the masked magician, did those 4 Fox specials before his true identity was revealed?  His defense was that he was trying to get magicians to think of new tricks, because they were using the same tricks passed on for eons.  Sure... he pretty much killed Magic as far as Television specials go, and caused billions of dollars of loss to magic companies... but he was right in that it's all the same.

As for David being de-throned... I thought he already was when he stopped doing those CBS specials, and Lance Burton came out of nowhere and got all those TV and Vegas deals.   I think he has an 11-year deal with the Monty Carlo that expires in 2009.

Now... for the biggest revelation in all of Magic...

Not only are Sigfried and Roy NOT gay... they're actually good friends with Penn and Teller, who constantly make fun of them in their act.   It's all a big trick.

Maybe if you try reading his post in its entirety, you'll be able to gleam which one from sheer context like the rest of us.
