Title: Live from Detroit
Post by: The D on Jan 30, 2006, 10:56:33 PM
As far as I know, the Superbowl has never been hosted in Detroit. Sure there was in the 80s, but that was at the Silverdome (one of the last stadiums with an air-supported fabric roof) in Pontiac which is about 30 miles from Detroit. But now they built the Lions a nice new stadium (http://www.fordfield.com/) downtown, even though the Lions suck ass.....

Detroit isn't all screwed up. I think we have less beggers and trash downtown than Chicago, and less muggings and gangs than New York. Most of the trash is out in the urban areas between Downtown and the 'burbs.

However, millions were spent to "clean up" the city before the game (http://www.sbxl.org/newdevelopments.asp). Besides the new stadium, the entire highway between the airport and downtown was repaved and bridges were demolished and rebuilt, including these huge suspension bridges (http://www.constructionequipmentguide.com/story.asp?story=6595&headline=Detroit). The riverfront was rebuilt. GM did a renovation of their headquarters when they moved into it, and stuck a giant logo on the 73-story tower (my avatar). There's 3 land casinos (MGM-Grand is one) that opened up a few years ago, and a riverboat casino. There's the new downtown rockafeller wannabe" park (http://www.campusmartiuspark.org/) they opened last year with a skating rink, 200ft snow slide, and lots of food for gamegoers. (http://www.motownwinterblast.com/) Compuware built their new headquarters between the park and the stadium, with Detroit's first and only Hard Rock Cafe.

And through the whole thing, I'll be sitting 40something miles away on my ass at home. At least if terrorists decide to use the game as a target, I'll be far enough away to have time to flee the radioactive cloud. I'm not worried though, even Faye's skinny ass couldn't slip past Homeland Security. Then again...

I have never given a rat's ass about the Superbowl.  The commercials aren't even worth it anymore.  Football can eat me.

I hate football in general.  Something about a bunch of big guys tackling one another outdoors never sat right with me.

Don't forget the slapping of asses.  Or sticking said asses up in the air.  Or the tight pants.  Or the horrid, bone crunching injuries.

I HATE that whoever invented football was much of a dumbass that decided to name it after other sport, the REAL football.

Soccer is the faggiest game ever.

But since the Patriots were fucked quicksand style, I won't be watching, but I hope Seattle wins. Fuck a Pittsburgh.

Yeah. I mean, they can't use their hands, and are so metro.

Sure football has assslapping and tight ends, but they have hot ass cheerleaders, and giant orgies on boats. Not to mention the Super Bowl Shuffle!

I love football if for no other reason when my school's team is winning women are more inclined to have sex and that's a scientific fact!

I have to agree with Nuri, I don't really care about the football, I do what most non-beer-guzzling-manly-men do and just watch it for the commercials.

However, being around here I'm innuated with all sorts of reminders of the big game. Even our own city out here is covered in XL banners "Welcome NFL fans!" as if anyone's actually going to come out this far to visit us.

Not that I'm all happy and joyous that Detroit is hosting and wasted billions of tax dollars to make the city all shiny so people don't think we're the ghetto of the US.

Also, Jimmy Kimmel is here taping his show in a temporary studio outside the superbowl. Too bad we couldn't have gotten someone better, like Jay Leno, or Conan, or even Letterman would be acceptable. Fuck a Kimmel, fuck his talk show, and fuck The Man Show while I'm at it.

Edit:
I heard some people who had tickets to one of his shows couldn't get in, so he told them to come back the next day and he'd let them in personally. Come the next day, and they were still standing out in the cold while the show went on. What a dick.

Wow...better not run with that. You might hurt yourself.

and I can't expect a Canadian and whatever the hell Tom is to understand. I like baseball cause it's slow, and far less homoerotic then football. It's a relaxing sport that you can sit back and watch and enjoy. And it's played during the summer which is another huge bonus. Either you get or you don't.

What would make the Superbowl watchable?

If The King decided to play for a team. Yep.

I'm just loving the selling points Hockey is trying to use to keep what few fans in the states they had after the stirke. "NO MORE TIES!" Well Whoopie-Fucking-Do. Still doesn't change the fact that it's on Leotard away from being figure skating.

It's a lot of padding, sticks, a puck, muscle and ability away from it to. That's like saying that baseball is just like cheerleading because they're both done on grass.

Agreed.  If any sport is to be picked on, it's football.  Many, many football players study ballet to develop balance.

Is a lot of Cheerleading done on grass? I don't know...I don't really keep up with it, but most of them time I've seen Cheerleaders it's in a gym not on grass. Except of course the cheerleader at Football games, but they arn't always on grass.

You could say that's like saying Baseball is just like another worthless as hell game...Lacrosse... just cause they are both played on grass.

I'll forever associate baseball with running around the yard in Brownsville at night catching lightning bugs while my grandfather sat and smoked his pipe on the patio and listened to the Astros games.   A lovely deja vu flash for me whenever I hear baseball on an AM station, but I don't associate it with sports excitement.

Not that hockey shootouts are that exciting either.  Some of the logistic rule changes to open up the ice were necessary because players have just gotten bigger, but breakaways and penalty shots that used to be real nail-biter moments aren't as much fun because we're seeing one-on-ones almost every game.

It really is like that, and that's why I like it. I don't watch it (or actually go to the ballpark which is one of my favorite things in this miserable world.) cause I want excitement. I watch it cause it's a good way to relax and pass a lazy summer afternoon. Although I have to say I got pretty damn excited when Pujols hit that three run homer in game 4 of the National League Championship, but as a rule it's not really why I watch it.
