Title: Well.Here I am.
Post by: MegatronYES on Jan 20, 2006, 10:15:55 PM
I'm only posting here to let Jordan know why I disappeared last month after stating that I was gonna start being online a lot more often. I uh... I actually have a pretty good reason.  My apatment building caught fire on December the 12th and nearly everything I own got wet, and I wasn't able to work for over a month and I still haven't gotten everything back in order, but I will be online again by likely April, so I'll be active in this realm of existence once again.

Um. Yeah.

It's always about Jordan.  Jordan Jordan Jordan.  Maybe I wanted to know what happened to you, too.  This one time only, I shall say that fire sucks.

Goddamn man!  That sucks royally...  I'd been wondering why you'd dissapeared for 40-some odd days.  So are you moving back in with your old room mates or looking to get a new place?

They moved me into a building just next next to the one I was in.  And I'm moving back to Indiana in the summer.

But in absolutely magnificent news...... we are now in possession of a $4,000-dollar camera and have begun filimg rehersals and the like. I've been told that we might be selling movies as soon as one year.  :o

Also I'm writing a book.

I have the outline to a movie/comic in my head... Problem is I think it has a bit too much action for a book (and even if it could be written, I have no idea how to write action), yet I can't draw or do film either.

My two partial manuscripts are on hiatus due to the metric shitloads of research involved. One is a science fiction with the Franklin expedition as the plot crux and the other is historical fiction told from the POV of Drypetis, Hephaestion's (as in Alexander the Great) wife.  Why the hell can't I think up something like Give a Mouse a Cookie so I can make a fortune and quit work?

Ok.... Let’s see. Don't know if any of these will be up our alley, but they don’t require much research.

The first is a piece I was working on for a KC Comic anthology thing. It was just a thing they publish once a year and it helps a writer hook up with artists and publishes the results.

I called it EVERWORLD and it was about a Lord of the Rings like world in the modern day. So you have like Elves driving cars and Dwarfs running mining machines. The basic story was about this Human Cop named Lindo and his Elf Partner Findel Lakewood, and they get caught up in Murder Mystery that goes right to the top of the High Elf Council that runs Trinity city where they live.

I warn you though...I ended up scrapping this idea, one because I started too late and missed the deadline for the KC comic and it was a whole year until it would come around again, but also cause the concept was very close to the RPG game SHADOWRUN. I didn't know this when I came up with it and I had never played SHADOWRUN, but alas. I also left out some import details that where part of the original story cause I stole them and am using them in my current project.

Uh let's see.... Here is another one if you wanted to work on a Movie Script. It's called Secret Identify and about a bumbling superhero who still hasn't filled in his wife about his superhero identity So of course all his secrets lead his wife to believe he is having an affair and she set out to prove it. So he has to convince her he isn't cheating and yet still keep his secret and laughter ensues.

This is one of the ideas I just don't have time for. The project I'm currently working on consists of 7 books.... And if you take into account between a year and year and half to write one.... I’ll be busy for the next 12 years. So by the time I got around to it...I'll more then likely have forgot all about this.

And here is the third idea, which would work as a short story. I called it "Spare the Simple" but I never liked the title and it was just working title. It was about a Amish Family that suddenly notice that all of the "Modern" people have vanished, and set in motion a conflict between they're curiosity and they want to stay seperate from a sinful world. Or course this all climaxes with a trip into the city where they discover that all of the modern world has been destroyed by aliens that "Spared the simple" cause they where no threat to them.

Yes, that's what exactly what I'm going to do...and I need her expertise in lace work to help, because I just can't get the crossstich right.

And I don't know how I got by without hearing Nuri's sweet nothings everyday.

You know I'd love to hear some of you guys great ideas since like 90% of this board claims to be writers as well. Come on...let's hear them.

Well if you're going to do Tolkien, make sure you get the religious aspects right. The religion is a very important part of the books, since Gandalf is basically an angel and Sauron is a demon. Aragorn is Jesus.

That's fucking hilarious that you thought up shadow run years later with an elven high council and everything.  They one upped you by having a dragon run for president and win though.

I'm not doing Tolkein. If I actually planned to use that idea..I wouldn't have posted it. And it was for a comic...so I wasn't exactly trying to get too deep with it.  It would have been at most 15 pages long and seen by I'd say at most 200 people. It was a throw away project at best. I won't post anything that I actually plan on using.

And besides Frank Herbert better uses the Jesus metaphor as method for story telling. But at least this is better criticism then that inane babble that you first posted. I love constructive criticism, but hate douche bags.

It was a real egg on my face moment and I was glad that I found out before I really got to working on it....I've actually ran all my ideas through another writer, and partner in crime who got me into this. I've actual had quite a few ideas that got shot down as already being done, and it's usually by stuff I've never even heard of befroe like Shadow Run. Although Shadow Run is set in the future on earth, and mine was set in present day on a different world..but still too close for comfort.

Also what's really import is execution. It's true what they say that it's all been done, and that it really boils down to the details. I'll give you an example.

A man finds himself trapped in a digital world controled by sinster computer programs out to kill our Hero.

Now I might have just described THE MATRIX....but I also could have just layed out the plot to TRON. And the MATRIX and TRON couldn't be more different.

If done right, that third idea sounds like it would be an awesome short story. You'll just have to figure out how first the Amish realize everyone's gone, then second, how they figure out the alien's intentions. Realize that as far as I know, Amish do live in areas and towns that have modern things like cars... there's a few Amish communities in the state and I've seen carts driving down the road alongside cars.

My own idea, eh? All right, only one other person knows about this.

Edit: Cliffnotes version

The story's set in the near future, so technology is similar to ours but slightly more advanced. The setting's in some country run by a puppet government and really manipulated by large monopolies and companies (not too different than today, actually).

The main character's a loner type of guy, not a lot of friends, doesn't remember much about his childhood. Has one friend who he crushes after. Around him wierd creatures are being spotted more and more, some dismiss them as hoaxes. Main character doesn't care until one of them kidnaps his friend. Suddenly some crooked cops are after him and one of them kill his father in front of him. He flips out and discovers he has telekenetic powers. He meets a stripper with similar powers who agrees to help him.

More and more of the creatures appear, resembling creatures in legends of old. A powerful religious organization uses the oppertunity to take over half the planet with a huge legion of followers. A resistance movement appears that the main characters join, but the main guy is reluctant to fight. He also has a tendancy to flip out and kill people who piss him off, none of this "scold them and send them to jail" crap. The main characters find out that the creatures are aliens who were caretakers of the earth, and their new leader wants to "reset" civilization. Also, the main characters (the guy, his crush, and the stripper, as well as others) find out they're really bioweapons created by the aliens that escaped. And so, humanity has to fight off the alien invasion, while they're not fighting amongst themselves.

I suck at cliffnotes.

Well I already had the first figured out. Cause I got the idea when I was making a trip to Iowa to vist my aunt. And they sit out on weekends and sell their wares to passing travels at an intersection in the road. I figured I could have the story start with them doing just that with many people stopping and what not. This could also give me the chance to plant the seeds of the real backbone of the story which is the fathers conflict with his son over his curiosity about the Modern world. Of course when they go out the next weekend no one comes or around or is on the road. This happens for the next few weeks as the son wants to push to find out what is going on and his father wants to stay out of it.

I hadn't figured out HOW they knew why the Aliens spared them or even how they knew it was aliens I never got that fat into it.

Deus ex machina in the form of a cell/camera phone that turned off when dropped, assuming the son knows something about them.  If they weren't all disintegrated, one would still be around.  Then again, if bodies are left intact, everything's going to be sticky & stinky.  Or they just wiped out flesh, but not mechanial things.

Which makes no sense because the technology is what the aliens feared in the first place....

The idea is great.  It definitely merits pondering over Irish coffee this cold & rainy weekend.

Ah, Shadowrun....the group I ran with should have had clown horns on their shoes and targets on their backs.   Cream pies and banana peels wouldn't have been out of place in the fights, either.  <_<

Well I always thought they left the Tech intact. It was really the people and how they would use that technology that they feared. People like the Amish wouldn't really know how to use it. But I guess a lot of it would be ruins and the such.

You know they could find like Newspapers and what not that proclaims the Aliens arrival that where printed before all mankind was wiped out. Sorta like the aliens arrived to give humans one last look see to make sure they weren't making a mistake before destroying them all. I could just see an old Amish guy picking up an issue of TIME from now empty and abadoned news stand which has huge headlines about the Aliens arrival.
