Dry is a relative term. But I agree, I think they'll have it all cleaned up( As clean as The Big Easy can be that is) before the big party.

What a beautiful GIF.
ZANGIEF'D!
-
And more cornholing with a 16-grit sandpaper condom at the pump as well if the Gulf of Mexico rigs are seriously damaged. >.<
-
Too late Bernie, I heard an oil platform crashed into one of the bridges spanning the bay outside Mobile, AL.
I don't feel sorry for those who decided to stay because they thought they could ride it out and decided to party. For those who couldn't leave and stayed at the Superdome... I didn't think that was the safest place either, but only a small part of the roof collapsed.
I've heard some parts of New Orleans and Mobile are under 15 or more feet of water, and they got hit by 25+foot waves.
Here I am, rocked you like a hurricane
here I am, rocked you like a huricaaanne!

That gif. needs to be replaced with Mississippi. Some parts of Biloxi & Gulfport were hit worse than they were during Camille. Since my great-grandmother's house was destroyed in that one, we had to go about 3 weeks after the storm, and it still looked like a war zone - I can't imagine worse than that. Her name's on a granite memorial to people killed in the storm.
I agree with D - I've been through a Cat 3 (Alicia in 1983), but Cat 4-5 and we're gonna be waiting for Nuri to open the doors at LJS for coffee the day before it hits. :P
My agency's main business is energy & marine; tankers, drilling rigs, etc. The claims department was here at 5 AM.

I think it'll dry up by Feb 28.
Doubtful. The city was designed by Dutch engineers--It's all below sea level and levies surround the city to keep the water out. Well, the levies broke, and now water from Pontchartrain is flowing into the city causing the water level to continue to rise.
Earlier today I saw footage online of people looting stores. They were running around in the store grabbing anything they could get a hand on, some of them walking out of the stores with carts overflowing with stuff. Oddly enough, they were all black and I didn't see any white folks. I guess the rich white folk fled already and the poor black folk are now stealing their stuff.
I even heard that there's professional burgulars going scuba diving and robbing the bank safes while they're underwater.
And where is the national guard? Why, in Iraq of course!
Bernie: I saw a gas station up here at $3.39 a gallon.
hundreds feared dead (http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200508/s1449647.htm)
When I first heard of the aftermath, I thought it was a few flooded streets and a snapped powet line or downed tree or two. That's because most reporters hadn't gotten in to asess the damage.
Now the're reporting bodies floating in the water and entire buildings demolished. What did the most damage was waves 30 feet high which turned houses into scrap wood and moved buildings a thousand feet from their foundations. It was like the American Version of the Indonesia Tsunami.
It's fucked up down there and proof that "boarding up" doesn't always help.
-
That's because most reporters hadn't gotten in to asses the damage.
Ha ha, I did a double-take. "What's that about asses?"
-
Overheard in line at Whole Foods today:
"Bad enough that half the Louisiana National Guard is in Iraq, but why the hell do they need the Guard's high water vehicles over there? High water vehicles in Iraq during hurricane season?!"
"Bullshit that got them over there is probably piled that high...."
-
Edit:
Bernie better run. I hear they're moving the refugees to the Astrodome.
Best song to describe what's going on:
Tragically Hip - New Orleans is Sinking
http://tragically-hip-lyrics.wonderlyrics....Is-Sinking.html (http://tragically-hip-lyrics.wonderlyrics.com/New-Orleans-Is-Sinking.html)
Bourbon blues on the street, loose and complete
Under skies all smokey blue-green
I can't forsake a dixie dead-shake
So we danced the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?
New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim
Colonel Tom, What's wrong? What's going on?
You can't tie yourself up for a deal
He said, Hey north you're south shut your big mouth,
You gotta do what you feel is real
Ain't got no picture postcards, ain't got no souvenirs
My baby, she don't know me when I'm thinking bout those years
Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just to stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud that looked a little like me
I had my hands in the river
My feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the lord above
And said, Hey man thanks
Sometimes I fell so good, I gotta scream
She said Gordie baby I know exactly what you mean
She said, she said, I swear to god she said...
My memory is muddy what's this river that I'm in?
New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim
-
New Orleans is a lost cause. Start anew upriver somwhere.
-
They should make a new New Orleans and call the old New Orleans Old Orleans so nobody confuses it with the new one.
-
I saw one of my old friends in the looter videos, shes the only white chick in the videos and shes got short blonde hair.
She was stuffing a bigass gun into her bag, good for her i guess.
Id just flood the rest and then tell everyone. "what? there was no new orleans, you mustve had a bad dream now go back to bed."
Bomb the superdome.

Girls Gone Wild: Undersea Looterville?

Nuri & Merla need to dust the guest room as well!
In Texas, the governor's office said Texas has agreed to take in an additional 25,000 refugees from Katrina and plans to house them in San Antonio, though exactly where has not been determined.
Gas over $3 here overnight. But at least we have cars to put them in. Fuck.
"You can do everything for other countries but you can't do nothing for your own people. You can go overseas with the military but you can't get them down here."
SING IT, BROTHER!! The National Guard just needs to start shooting anybody with a gun on sight. This shit of starting fires and sniping so rescuers can't get to anyone, human or animal, needs to be stopped. I have news for anyone who thinks they're getting back at "the man" - rich white folk have something called "business interruption insurance". The only people getting hurt are other poor-to-middling people who weren't lazy-ass motherfuckers and tried to make an honest living.
-
i'll never understand how all these people are getting fucked now, if they KNEW it was coming. its not like it was a fucking earthquake for god's sake.
and the excuse "they didnt go anywhere cause they are poor" is not good at all. they could have gone away anyways, the storm was way too strong.

Thus further proving Faye's detachment from reality.
-
Actually, Faye, I can give reasons, stupid though they may seem.
Past experience for some and no experience at all for others. Lots of people remember Betsy, which struck NOLA in 1965. It was originally a mile or so shy of a 4, but lessened to a 3 before it hit. Most hurricanes slow down before they reach land, which is not a reason for a cavalier attitude, but many people had dim memories of making it through Betsy just fine. It flooded, but levees didn't break and people were just a hell of a lot nicer then. It didn't turn into Escape from New York.
Hardly anyone in Biloxi left because their houses had made it through Cat 5 Camille in 1969. Beauvior (Jefferson Davis' last home) has made it through hurricanes since 1854 - it's totally demolished. Those with no memories of hurricanes think it will never happen to them and want to throw a party. Dumb idea. Houston was crippled by flooding from Allison in 2001 and that was just a tropical depression that wouldn't move for days. Luckily, our water drains off fairly quickly.
I can sum up what the poor fear in one word: looters. They can't afford property insurance and think that it will be open season on their homes, especially if they're damaged, and would rather face the storm and possible damage than leave what little they have vulnerable. This time, it was the wrong decision.
-

Well like Bernie said "Past experience for some and no experience at all for others." Nothing like this has ever happened before. Those Levies were never suppose to break.
As for the poor people, and I do mean poor people Faye. Being from a privileged class I doubt you have ever come across them. These are not the lower middle class nor economic/working class people you are thinking of. The people are the poorest of the poor. They probably have a combine household income of $400-$800 a month. If it wasn't for the free breakfast and lunchs at school most of their kids would go hungry. They do not own homes nor would they qualify for loan to get one much less have any kind of insurance policy. They wouldn't even qualify for a Habitat for Humanity House. As a whole they do not own cars and if they do they are very old and not for driving long distances. Some do not own phones. Living paycheck to paycheck they have no type of savings. (Some people of other class were unable to get access to their money anyway.) I know it is hard to imagine this sort of poverty in the U.S but sadly it does exist.
-
The National Guard just needs to start shooting anybody with a gun on sight. This shit of starting fires and sniping so rescuers can't get to anyone, human or animal, needs to be stopped. I thought they should have taken on the "Shoot on sight" policy from the very start. Unless you actually threaten their lives they'll think they can get away with it.
And there must have been a tanker of crazy juice spilled into that flood water, because I don't know you'd want to try to kill the very people that are trying to help you.
Those Levies were never suppose to break.
Those levies where never desgined to take this kind of punishment. They could only withstand a CAT 3 Hurricane. People that thought those things could never break, had their head firmly planted in the sand. Cause people have being saying this very thing could happen for years now. Man has drained, damned and levied all of the area's nature defenses against floods to make more room for people. We caused this tragedy because we couldn't just let nature be.
And 'I'm not surprised people stayed....I'm kinda curious why so many are staying now, I mean if you can walk or even wade out of New Orleans then by god do it and head north, but I get why they stayed orignally. What I don't get is why they are acting the way they are. New York is a great example of how a city SHOULD respond to something like this....they came together and helped each other and there are so many stories of brave people that put their lives on the line to save total strangers. But now in New Orleans there isn't antying like that. People are shooting each other, setting fires, stealing, looting...They have fallen well short of the shining example of New York.

Did anyone see the look on Bush's face when he had the meeting with the governers? He looked totally dumbfounded and out of it. I could only imagine he was thinking: "uh huh... uh huh... I have no idea what these guys are talking about."
Considering how much he screwed up in Iraq, I'm not suprised he's having trouble with Bagdad 2/Atlantis/NO.
And because I'm evil:

Here's some interesting news I've heard through the grapevine.
Something Awful's servers were located in New Orleans, and the people who ran the server company actually stayed at the company to keep the servers running through the hurricane and flooding to keep the sites hosted on them (including SA) up. They supposedly evacuated because the site's down, either their generator ran out, the servers are underwater, or looters stole them.
That determination's nice, but I think their lives are more important than SA's website.
SING IT, BROTHER!! The National Guard just needs to start shooting anybody with a gun on sight. This shit of starting fires and sniping so rescuers can't get to anyone, human or animal, needs to be stopped.
I was shocked when I heard a National Guard helecopter ran away from the Superdome when shots were fired at it? Don't Chinooks come with at least one machine gun? They should have fired back. Kill the gangs and deal with the concequences later.
I've noticed how the Nation Guard stayed out of the city after those shooting incidents, waiting for "reinforcements". Ball-less cowards. Why is it the US only sends the military when they know or think they have the upper hand? They never take risks, they only send in troops after boming the crap out of the enemy. And while they play pussyfoot, people die are murdered and raped in the Superdome and other places. Go in there and put that years of military training to good use and kill someone!
They have fallen well short of the shining example of New York.
Well yes, but in New York half the city didn't lose their home or find themselves starving and half underwater.

Whyat's the fucking point in trying to lay blame at this point? Take that energy and go donate some blood and clothing and help out these poor schmucks.
-
My thoughts exactly.
-
Yeah, clothing is always a good thing to donate. My family's actually been donating clothing to Purple Heart and Goodwill for awhile now, We actually had a couple bags of stuff go out this morning.
-
Holy crap, they've set up shop across the street. Seriously, there's an old Levi's plant nearby and they've scuttled Kelly Airforce base leftovers in it. I can look out of the window and see them there. Well, this is a little awkward....
-
Make some sandwiches for the poor folks. See if any of them want to come over and watch some anime.
-
I know I would...
-
Damn, that kinda makes me wish my entire city was obliterated by mother nature or god or whatever so that I could be a refugee in front of nuris house.
-
That could possibly be the dumbest fucking thing I've ever read on these boards.
-
And it didn't come from Tom?

But they're scary looking!

You all lowered yourselves by recognizing Faye's comments.
But seriously donate clothing and NEVER money. Since not only can you not be sure that the money is going where it says it is, but you already have been contributing to relief and rescue with you federal fucking taxes. Oh sorry Faye. I was talking to the Americans.
-
Wal-mart had a blue milk jug with a piece of paper taped to the front that said "Donate to the Katrina Relief". A jug! For all I know, that's the cashier's and she empties it into her pocket before going home.
The guy on the news said if we gave anything to give money, but that's (what you said, I mean) pretty much why I don't like to give money. It's kinda hard to steal a can of green beans and use it to buy booze or a whore... not that it can't be done, I guess.
-
Yeah, pshft. I eat the news for breakfast.
-
If you're giving to a reputable charity like Second Harvest or the Red Cross or The Salvation Army, you can be pretty damn sure that money's getting put to good use. And they can stretch that dollar a lot further than you can.
-

Haha, my Wal*Mart had the same thing, however the jug there was clear... There was also a euro in the jug too, which was odd.
Anyway, after 9/11, I'm not so sure I'd even consider donating money to the Red Cross after seeing reports on their absurd surplus. Money that was going nowhere... Anyway, I have donated to them, but I'm not sure how I'm gonna feel if we see the same thing going on again.
-
MIne had a couple o fbig fish tanks that some stupid Bangladeshi little kid was trying to stick his hand in an getting slapped for it. He also was trying to get our hamburgers.
-
Hamburgers?
-
There's a McDonald's in the Wal*Mart.
-
Ohhhhhh...one of those deals.
-
Maybe if you didn't stick your hamburgers in a fish tank of money, the kid wouldn't be trying to get them. Lesson learned!
-
Hey man. These people lost their homes. I'm trying to help in any way I can.
-
Our local Wal-Mart actually took the time to remove the stickers from the March of dimes donation box before putting it out.
-
Hahahaha! That's rich!
-

I don't trust the Red Cross after 9/11, and I'm still wondering about the Tsunami area...
-
Fuck, a fucking Katrina escapee, left-over, whatever was littering! Bitch! That pisses me the fuck off. San Antonio gives your bitch-ass shelter and you toss your purse-trash out into the street?! Save it for when you get the fuck back to Lake New Orleans, you fucking ingrate!
-
You ought to see the Astrodome/Reliant Certer parking lot, Nuri. They have trash barrels like every ten feet and where does their shit go? Right on the ground. Some definitely have the entitlement attitude - "This awful thing happened to me, so someone's gonna wait on me hand and foot."
We took a load of dog & cat food by the SPCA on Saturday and had to wait in a line of cars for 15 minutes to even get up to the building drop-off area because there were so many people donating. The guy unloading said it had been that way since 7 in the morning - woohoo!! :D
-
I can't believe the bullshit....
Tonight between 8 and 9pm Eastern, almost every single station on cable TV interrupted programming to show a "Hurricane Relief Concert" done by celebs. Oh yes, thank you for wasting my time PRETENDING you guys care about poor people.
I'm talking almost every channel here. FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC, PAX, WB, UPN, TBS, SpikeTV, TLC, CBC, G4, Style, Discovery, SciFi, PBS, HBO, even Univision. I had to turn it to NASCAR because that was the only other thing playing... You take away the Redneck's drugs and they'd probably blow up the White House.
If the constant crap from 9/11 wasn't bad enough, now they're pulling this shit like Big Brother. YOU MUST WATCH OUR CONCERT. GIVE US MONEY! Hope to god they don't make a holiday out of the day Katrina made landfall, or I'll kill someone.
Oh, gotta love that black dude telling Bush he's racist, and the guy who walked up to Cheney who was getting interviewed and told him to fuck off on live Television.
And the woman talking to her insurance agent: "I don't have the papers, they're in the house. No, I have no phone, there's no phone lines. No, my mailbox is embedded in the neighbor's house. No, the post office is 10 feet underwater!"
-
I'm so sorry you were inconvienienced for one fucking hour of one fucking night.,
-
He was just so upset that he couldn't beat-off to Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi that night...
-
That show is funny.
-
I just said "fuck the hurricane relief concert crap" and changed the channel. When I came home the other night and saw about a minute of it on TV, it just sounded.... depressing as hell! Dude, if my house gets all Atlantis'fied, you better play me some rock and roll, not any of this "oh loh-rd" piano-whining dirgey-dirgey shite. "Yes, I'm homeless. Make me wish I had a bullet in my head as well."
-
Oh, and I read this article that horrified me, but again, I'm ignorant in general. It was talking about the Katrina children attending some of the local schools. One mother commented how nice and great the school her son was going to was. That school is one of the worst schools in the city! I had the unfortunate experience of attending a school in that school district for my second grade year, and I have nothing positive to say of it. I felt like I was growing stupider by the minute just being there. If that's a good school for them, maybe it's for the best their old school is now being headmastered by Sebastian the Crab. The only thing that grates me more than people having ten million children is bad schools. Every child should be loved and every child should go to a decent school. You should get a chance to be stupid, not have it thrust upon you. It almost makes me want to teach... if only I didn't hate children so.... How many times do I have to tell you, kid, leave the damn Shocktarts alone!

I went to work at LJ's today, haven't been there in about a week, and just like at the bookstore and everywhere else for that matter, they're taking Katrina fundage. Except, we have a stupid box. People are just suppose to hand us their money and trust that we stick it in the box. It's ridiculous. Some of my coworkers are thieves. Long John Silver's has no business collecting for Katrina, especially in such a manner. At least at the bookstore, donations get treated like a sale. Meaning that if someone stole donations there, the till would come up short at the end of the day and the manager would know. It's not a separate box someone can just grift from...

Does he act dumb like Owen Wilson? And star in mildly funny movies with Ben Stiller like Owen Wilson? Or have annoying, even less talented brothers like Owen Wilson?
If not, good. Less people to kill.

so no
hes fucking hot, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmm

Well the president didn't CAUSE a hurricane., but his slow response is indeed something he need to know up to, but I'd also place the blame more on FEMA and the goverments of LA and New Orleans. They were allotted money to prepare for diasters just like this in the wake of 9/11 and FEMA was constantly being given warnings that something like this would was not only likely, but could happen at anytime. So I'd love to know what LA did with all that money and why FEMA thought they knew better then experts on the subject.
-
Wow, Bush is actually taking the bullet for something?
Is the world ending?
-
No, he's getting Roberts approved as Chief Justice.
People are sometimes blind.
-
I think Bush did cause the hurricane. What does Bush love and own? Oil. What's out there in da ocean? OIL rigs. If my theory is correct, there is a giant weather machine hidden in one of these rigs. Powering it in a supersized running wheel is a giant hamster that hates black people. Think about it.
-
Hmmm... diabolical.
*turns on the Bat Signal*
He'll come.
-
It's essentially a symbolic responsibility, but he's doing exactly what the CEO of a multi-billion dollar global corporation has to do after a major bureaucratic meltdown. It's not all private jets and receptions. Of course he can't attend to every detail of every department under the federal umbrella, but he is responsible for appointing competent individuals who in turn have the sense to hire people who can get the job done all the way down the chain of command. Being a buddy is not a valid qualification for an important position.
FEMA - Fuck Everybody? Mission Accomplished! :P
