So I call up one repair shop for my rear drum brakes. They want $250.
Another shop wants $330! To replace shoes and drums?
Did I miss the memo when it became extremely fucking expensive to fix even minor routine car problems? I don't need this shit when I'm unemployed.
-
What kind of Car is it? Last time I replaced Drums on a car they were 90 bucks each...but that was on a cheap ass Ford. If you have something a little more "rare" they tend to charge more. Costs me Fifty bucks for a Used Taillight and that was with me installing it myself.
-
Yeah, I'd chell a car junkyard and see if they have your part. Then install it yourself.
My passenger side mirror was wiped out, and it would have cost me 350 to replace it, but I managed to get a replacement for 75 bucks and it was easily as hell to replace.

Somebody was definitly trying to rip you off.
-
Try every place I called.
"This is a difficult electrical job since it's a powet mirror, and the car will need to be in the shop for at least a day."
Then? Took me 2 hours to take apart the door, remove the old mirror (which the wires were plugs, no hard electrical work) and then I plugged in the new mirror and screwed it in.
-
o_o Tom is mechanically gifted?
-
I'm alot more gifted than I let on.
-
I think the problem has to do how car mechanics do their work. They say a job will take 2 hours. Then they spend 1 hour and 45 minutes scratching their testicles and watching NASCAR or football. Then they spend the last 15 minutes fixing the problem in a half-assed manner. Then they charge you for the full 2 hours. Then they use the money to get sex from a teenaged hooker.
-
Teenaged hookers are greatly underappreciated.
-
thanks god i dont have a car
-
Yeah, mobility really sucks.
-
thanks god i dont have a car
Thank god for everyone ELSE you don't have a car.
They could make a pretty good sequel to "Blood on the Pavement" if they just followed you around after you went "Out" for the night.
-
She'd have to be able to turn the key first, I dunno if she could.
-
Okay, that one just didn't make any sense.
-
You've never been so drunk, that the simple action of turning a key is difficult?
...I have. Sleeping outside is ok, though.
-
Stop being a pussy and replace them yourself. Granted drum breaks are more difficult to replace than disks, but it's still a relatively easy job.
-
You've never been so drunk, that the simple action of turning a key is difficult?

thats cause you are a stupid ass.
i hate driving, thats it.
-
How could you hate driving?
-
actually, im afraid of driving. yeah.
-
Jeez, another? Why are so many people afraid of driving?
-
Hitting people, the cost of insurance, running over animals, running into a lamp post/building/other car, freeway accidents, drunk drivers...
-
i think in my past life i died in a car accident.
PLUS i would HATE if i would ever be the designated driver. god that would kill me. a la barney in that simpsons in ny episode :P
-
I'm more concerned about killing a cute little animal than I am some person.
-
I'd keel over if I ran over a cat.
Deer though, it'd be dinner.
-
There were two little shits a couple of blocks from our house who thought it was fun to stay out in the street until the last possible second, then run to the curb. I stopped the car, looked them in the eyes and flipped them off, which scared the fuck out of them for some reason. I expected Moomie to be in the driveway the next day watching for the evil bitch who scared her pwecious Spoilsford and Cumstayne, but I haven't seen them since.
I'd take my brakes to the drums for an animal, but free-range brats who pull stunts like this are fair game in my book.
-
I've never hit an animal, but I had one hit me. A bird flew right into the passanger side door while was driving.
-
Long, but worth a read. Part of why I flipped off the kids from the safety of my car and stay away from them in general.
Carlson: Reprimanding a careless kid is a crime? Apparently
By JOHN CARLSON

You might think things have gone a bit wacky lately on the courts and crimes beat.
We have the U.S. Supreme Court deciding a city can bulldoze your house if the motel some developer wants to build will bring in more property taxes. Even Tom DeLay and Maxine Waters are together in their criticism of that absurdity.
Then we have the governor of Iowa restoring voting rights to convicted felons, even if they haven't paid court-ordered restitution to their victims. The governor did this on Independence Day, no less. One can only imagine what the founding fathers would have thought of those two moves.
But this next one, the case of a fellow named Fitzroy Barnaby, would likely make Adams, Jefferson and Madison laugh out loud. Or cry.
Pretend for a minute you're the unlucky Mr. Barnaby.
You're driving down the street obeying traffic laws and generally being a good citizen, when some idiot kid wanders into traffic. You slam on the brakes and swerve, missing the kid and leaving a puddle on the car seat.
You have two choices. You can shut up, drive home 5 miles an hour and have a stiff belt. Or you can take a moment to tell the kid how she almost got herself killed and ruined your life forever.
You're better off going with the first option, considering what happened to Barnaby, who went with the second.
This is because the 28-year-old Evanston, Ill., man ended up - and this is not a joke - being officially branded a sex offender.
The facts, as reported in the Chicago Sun-Times, show that an angry Barnaby called to the 14-year-old he'd nearly run down, yelling, "Come here, little girl."
He then got out of his car, took her by the arm and gave her a lecture about how stepping in front of a vehicle is a very bad idea.
The girl ran away, complained to police and Barnaby was charged with - again no joke - attempted kidnapping and child abduction. This is even though he didn't attempt to take the girl anywhere. Barnaby beat those charges. He was, however, convicted of unlawful restraint of a minor. And in Illinois, that is considered a sex offense.
That means even though he didn't do anything to the kid other than take her by the arm and give her a lecture that might end up saving her life, he must register as a sex offender. He is prohibited from living near a park or school and must keep local police advised as to his place of residence.
He might even get his name and picture in the local newspaper, to advise neighbors they're living near a sex offender.
How is this possible, you ask?
Well, a spokesman in the prosecutor's office said, the guy should be considered a sex offender "because of the proclivity of offenders who restrain children to also commit sex acts or other crimes against them."
Now we'll let the Appellate Court of Illinois, which upheld this insanity last week, explain itself.
While it may well be "unfair for (Barnaby) to suffer the stigmatization of being labeled a sex offender when his crime was not sexually motivated," grabbing a kid is "often a precursor" to a child being molested, the court said. "It is (Barnaby's) actions which have caused him to be stigmatized, not the court," the ruling said.
Trial court judge Patrick Morse even conceded Barnaby's only apparent intention was to chastise the girl. But, the judge said, "I can't read his mind."
Barnaby's lawyer, Frederick Cohn, of Chicago, provided a succinct assessment of the situation: "This is the most stupid ruling the appellate court has rendered in years."
Makes you wonder what Illinois judges have done in years past to equal or top this one.
Could this happen in Iowa?
Maybe. Say you hold a kid by the arm while you're chewing him out for tromping through your flower bed. You could be charged with "false imprisonment." And the Iowa Code says a person convicted of any criminal offense against a minor has to register as a sex offender.
Better to silently suffer the flattened flowers. As Barnaby learned, anything can happen when you're hauled in a courtroom.
When I first read this, I took "flattened flowers" as a metaphor for run-over kids.
-
Hell in a handbasket man...hell in a handbasket.
-
You are a handbasket. Shut up.
-
That's an insult to handbaskets everywhere.
-
Classic comeback!
-
Looks like Barnaby decided to get revenge....

I'd run over the goddamn kid. Merla was driving me home from grocery shopping last night, and suddenly she says something like, "Goddamn, I couldn't even see that guy." And then, to my horror, I notice up ahead is a bike rider (not a kid though) all in dark clothing with two measly sickly-ass strips of reflective tape on his pedals riding just outside of the bike lane right on the corner where we turn right. And I said, "Well shit, I would've run him over. I didn't see a damn thing. You would've been screaming and pulling the wheel over to the left." And then when we got home, she bragged about my first would-be fatality. (Though in hindsight, it wasn't.)
-
Well shit, I would have done my own brakes by now. I called some guy to help me and borrow tools from. He's from my grandparent's church, some South American guy who supposedly works on cars for members of the church who are short on money.
I called him two weeks ago, and he told me he was busy but he'd get one of his other associates to call me. Then, a week ago, I contacted him again, and made sure he got my number. He said he'd make sure the associate called me.
I still haven't gotten the call. Fucking christians.
-
Associate. Ha ha, what an ass-word. I just don't mean in the literal sense either. Every other employer and person calls someone an associate. It's just another word for "that guy".
-
You mean like fuck buddy?
With the price of gas over $2.70, I might as well walk my ass all over the place now. Or ride a horse
-
You mean like fuck buddy?
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, NO.
-
You mean like fuck buddy?
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, NO.
Bloody Hell!
-
i enjoy how doug was bitching about getting his car fixed and now that he has it, hes bitching about the gas price
-
I saw over $3 yesterday, but it was in the middle of Rich Republican Land at a busy intersection. They'll pay it gladly rather than drive 2 blocks to another station
At least the prices have made Eddie STFU about my getting a Wrangler for my "new" car so we'd have a big Jeep and a little Jeep. Toyota Echo, baby!
-
I like Bush's solution.
"MORE MILES PER GALLON BY 2010!"
He's a fucking idiot. People need to start spiking their fuel with ethenol.
-
Since all his poll rating have taken such a dump, wonder if MTV would have forbidden NIN to have a picture of him as a backdrop while performing The Hand That Feeds if the Music Awards were airing say next week. Like anyone would notice sad old tired old George anyway with a sweaty Trent Reznor up there repeatedly growling "...stay down on your knees"....
-
I just got a strange mental image of Bush and Trent Reznor. :x Was I suppose to get that?
-
Wow, that is fucked up.
-
Christ on toast points no! I was talking about this (and I got it wrong - it was the Movie Awards show):
LOS ANGELES - The rock band Nine Inch Nails said Friday it canceled plans to appear on next week’s MTV Movie Awards after the network questioned the band’s plans to perform in front of an image of President Bush.
The band was slated to perform “The Hand That Feeds,” the first single from its latest album. A Los Angeles Times review called the song “a warning against blind acceptance of authority, including that of a president leading his nation to war.”
“We were set to perform ‘The Hand That Feeds’ with an unmolested, straightforward image of George W. Bush as the backdrop. Apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me,” Nine Inch Nails’ leader Trent Reznor said in a statement posted on the band’s Web site.
MTV said in a statement: “While we respect Nine Inch Nails’ point of view, we were uncomfortable with their performance being built around a partisan political statement. When we discussed our discomfort with the band, their choice was to unfortunately pull out of the Movie Awards.”
-
That reminds me. My old roomie can never figure out the meanings of songs whose meanings are entirely political. Curse him for assuming maturity in artists!
-
He must listen to Green Day alot then.
-
i enjoy how doug was bitching about getting his car fixed and now that he has it, hes bitching about the gas price
Isn't it nice that everyone chauffers your ugly ass all over the place. Once you get a car of your own (God save us), you'll be bitching about gas prices all over the place along with us.
He's a fucking idiot. People need to start spiking their fuel with ethenol.
Or Grandpa's moonshine.
-
I saw something on the Science Channel about this old guy who is one of the world's top inventors. He read about Chinese tallow tree seeds having a lot of oil, and now he's working with a company to develop jet fuel from the seeds. He lit one while he was talking; just a regular seed, and the thing burned for like 90 seconds with flame spurting out the sides. I'm glad someone is finding a use for those damn razor seed pod dropping bastards.

nigga please
im never gonna get a car EVER.
plus, 3 bucks for a gallon is NOTHING.
-
Yep. From the 6/1/04 Washington Post:
prices at the pump averaging $5.07 a gallon in France, $5.36 in Germany and $5.59 in Britain.
And one of my clients says it's currently about $6 - 6.50 a gallon in Norway.
European consumers inevitably have demanded more efficient cars. According to Hakim, overall oil consumption has fallen in Germany and Britain since the 1970s.
This won't happen as long as idiots here think it's supporting da trooooops to drive a fucking Hummer.
-
in Peru is 4-5 bucks per gallon. so people here should consider themselves lucky!
-
I always thought Peru dealt in children as currency.
WELL I LEARNED SOMETHING NEW!
-
You people put the strangest images in my head.
-
I probably wouldn't have a problem with gas prices if my car didn't seem to be using so much lately. It's not my tires or filters, although I might change the filter anyway. Not only that, but my gas needle acts wierd. One minute it would be at half full, then 5 minutes later it moves to 1/3 full, then 10 minutes later it drifts to over half full.
And Detroit area has one of the worst mass transit systems in the US.
-
A can of Chemtool about every 3-4th fillup works wonders. A clean carb is a happy carb.
-
What if my car has fuel injection?
-
Then it's considerably newer than mine. :)
