Warner Bros. has released new concept art for its controversial Loonatics series. The new artwork keeps the color schemes for the characters but discards the angular and slightly menacing look for something that has a bit more anime styling to it. Additionally, the network seems to be making it clear that the series is "inspired by" the classic cartoons and that the characters are descendants -- not reworked versions of the originals -- presumably due to the protest of the characters' styles. Additionally, as noted before, the name of Buzz Bunny has been changed to Ace Bunny, due to the name "Buzz Bunny" already being used for a decidedly maturely rated product. As stated in the Loonatics press release, the characters get their powers from "cosmic dust."

The voice cast and lineup for the series has also been announced, featuring veteran US voice actors for the main roles and a healthy dose of guest stars that range from stage and screen actors (Tim Curry, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Florence Henderson) to industry veterans (Tom Kenny and Phil LaMarr).

The Loonatics, along with the characters that inspired them, are as follows:

Ace Bunny (ancestor: Bugs Bunny/voice: Charlie Schlatter): quick witted leader who has martial arts and "laser-lock vision"

Lexi Bunny (ancestor: Lola Bunny/voice: Jessica DiCicco): second in command who can blast things with her mind and has hyper hearing

Danger Duck (ancestor: Daffy Duck/voice: Jason Marsdsen): arrogant duck who resents Ace and wants to lead the team: can teleport and toss "magical energy spheres"

Spaz B. Wilde (ancestor: Tasmanian Devil/voice: Kevin Michael Richardson): the destruction expert who can destroy things with deadly tornadoes and super strength

Rev Runner (ancestor: Road Runner/voice: Rob Paulsen): a super fast talker who has embedded GPS technology and the ability to race at superspeeds

Tech E. Coyote (ancestor: Wile E. Coyote/voice: Kevin Michael Richardson): supergenius who is the team's gadget guru -- also has regenerative abilities, electromagnetic powers, and "mechanical mastery"

Zadavia (voice: Candi Milo): the mentor of the Loonatics who sends them out on missions

Loonatics will premiere this fall on Kids WB.

And I have nothing bad to say about Loonatics.  I think I'm just so grateful the designs are no longer pointy and angular that the words have escaped me. The colouring is a little too matchy-matchy and the eyes are kinda weird.  Eh, the worst they can do is another Xiaolin Showdown or Mucha Lucha, easily ignorable crap.

Award-winning studio Warner Bros. Animation and the #1 broadcast network for kids, Kids' WB!, today announced the all-star voice cast for the highly anticipated Looney Tunes-inspired series, "Loonatics Unleashed," set to debut on Kids' WB! in fall 2005. Headlining the ensemble cast for this innovative animated television series from Warner Bros. Animation are Emmy Award-winning Rob Paulsen ("Steven Spielberg Presents Pinky & The Brain," "Steven Spielberg Presents Animaniacs"), Emmy Award-nominated Kevin Michael Richardson ("The Batman," "The Matrix Revolutions"), Charlie Schlatter ("Diagnosis Murder," "Ferris Bueller"), Jason Marsden ("Spirited Away," "Static Shock"), Candi Milo ("Mucha Lucha!," "Dexter's Laboratory") and newcomer Jessica DiCicco ("The Buzz on Maggie").

"Loonatics Unleashed" will also feature the guest voice talents of Academy Award-nominated Michael Clarke Duncan ("Sin City," "The Green Mile"), Emmy Award-winning Tim Curry ("The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Scary Movie 2"), Vivica A. Fox ("Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Missing"), Florence Henderson ("The Brady Bunch"), Tom Kenny ("SpongeBob SquarePants," "The Batman") and Phil LaMarr ("Pulp Fiction," "Mad TV").

"With its engaging combination of heroic action, comedy, compelling storylines and stunning animation all set in a futuristic sci-fi world, we believe that 'Loonatics Unleashed' will be a landmark television series for kids," said Sander Schwartz, President, Warner Bros. Animation. "We're thrilled to have such an incredibly talented voice cast and innovative creative team bringing this all new show to life. As it joins the Warner Bros. family, this Looney Tunes inspired series for new generations of cartoon fans is sure to be an exciting addition to the lineup of hit shows on Kids' WB!."

"As we broaden our audience with more dual gender programming, 'Loonatics Unleashed' is a perfect fit for Kids' WB!, with larger-than-life action, irreverent comedy and relatable characters, offering something for everyone," added Betsy McGowen, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Kids' WB! "Both boys and girls have overwhelmingly embraced the strong male and female heroic leads [NURI NOTE:  "female heroic LEADS"?  What, did Taz get a sex change?  I only see one.] in this empowering ensemble. We're excited to, once again, join our franchise building strength with Warner Bros. Animation's talented creative team, and this stellar voice cast, to bring to our fall lineup a series that we know will resonate very well with kids."

"Loonatics Unleashed," an all-new action packed, comedy-adventure series set seven hundred years in the future, stars an ensemble cast of six superheroes who are descendants of the Looney Tunes. Living in the year 2772, in the perpetual twilight of Acmetropolis, where supernatural phenomena are the norm, our team becomes imbued with super powers after a massive meteor knocks Earth off its axis. While members of this super-charged team share the same irreverent, sharp-edged wit as their forefathers, this formidable sextet has evolved into a force to be reckoned with. Banding together to become the Loonatics, we've got:

    * Ace Bunny (descendant of Bugs Bunny), voiced by Charlie Schlatter, the adroit and quick-witted, action-driven leader who galvanizes his crew for each mission, boasting infrared laser-lock vision and marital arts ingenuity.
    * Lexi Bunny (descendant of Lola Bunny), voiced by Jessica DiCicco, the girl empowered second-in-command, instilled with expert eavesdropping, hyper-sensitive hearing, awe-inspiring aerial agility and an innate ability to blast objects with her mind.
    * Danger Duck (descendant of Daffy Duck), voiced by Jason Marsden, the spotlight hungry, "I can do it better than Ace" wannabe leader of the Loonatics, bragging teleporting expertise and a talent for tossing magical energy spheres to fend-off foes.
    * Spaz B. Wilde (descendant of Tasmanian Devil), voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, the group's grunting muscle-bound construction destructor causing tornadoes of all kinds with a super strength every villain fears.
    * Rev [Reverand?  All right, religion!] Runner (descendant of Road Runner), voiced by Rob Paulsen, the rapid fire, head-spinning talker the Loonatics are quick to quash, buoyed by his brain-embedded telekinetic GPS-tracking system and catch-him-if-you-can super sonic speed.
    * Tech E. Coyote (descendant of Wile E. Coyote), voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, the effusively erudite technical genius and gadget guru with an endless "way over their heads" vocabulary and scientific savoir faire, imbued with regenerative powers, electromagnetic abilities and mechanical mastery.
    * Zadavia, voiced by Candi Milo, the mysterious organizer of the Loonatics who sends the team out on their missions.

Rounding out the renowned talent roster are notable guest stars from the worlds of feature film and television, including:

    * Tim Curry as a nefarious carnival barker bent on mutating all of Acmetropolis.
    * Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin, [ha ha, no, I'm just jerking you, that's not his name] a gravity-defying social menace who does his best to bring the Loonatics down.
    * Vivica A. Fox as a nocturnal villainess bent on blinding all around her with smooth-as-velvet traps.
    * Florence Henderson as an embittered academic rival of Tech E. Coyote, with an incredibly swollen head -- literally.
    * Tom Kenny emerging from his underwater role to ride the wave as a futuristic robotic Viking.
    * Phil LaMarr as an envious athlete from an out-of-this-world sport who covets the Loonatics' amazing super powers.

While cosmic dust has bestowed incomparable super powers on our heroes, it has equally given the land's villains their own uncommon strengths that pose an on-going threat to the Earth and all of Acmetropolis-kind. But no matter how high the odds are stacked against them, the Loonatics jet in to save the world at a moment's notice.  [Saving the world stuff AGAIN?  What about implementing that Acmetropolis recycling program instead?  Sometimes the goals in cartoons are too damn lofty.]

"Loonatics Unleashed" is produced by Warner Bros. Animation under the guidance of executive producer Sander Schwartz, Emmy Award-nominated producer Ron Myrick, story editor Rick Copp and creative executives Christopher Keenan and Megan Casey.

After watching the entire first episode, I've gotta say the original character designs quite possibly might have made the show better. Not good, just not as bad.

I can't decide which is worse though, this or G.I. Joe Sigma 6.

Saturday morning cartoons have never been as horrible as they are now, and that's not just nostalgia talking. Something is definitely a-fucking-miss.

You know what's amiss? It's BAD DIRECTING. I watched Sigma six, WHAT THE FUCK. Flat Tones! No emotion in the performance at all!
These day's, Cartoons are either Hacked up Japanese Imports or reeallly bad, really cheesy American commercials.
Where is the day's of Beast Wars? Of the Original Batman Animated Series? Shadow Raiders? Reboot? SwatKats? Batman Beyond? Phantom 2040?  OF THE ANIMATED SPIDER-MAN SERIES? Jesus CHRIST, I think the original POWER RANGERS is better than 75% of the mess that is on these days. The only palpable things I watch now is TMNT, which is adequate, Xiaolin Showdown if I'm really bored, The Batman just to see how they hacked up the newest Villian(Though some are decent. The Clayface villian was the most interesting twist, but the episode after ol' Bennett went crazy, Batsy just conveniently FORGETS that he used to be his friend),  And I'm currently in the process of Judging Transformers:Cybertron...and I gotta say I'm getting a little more dissapointed with each episode of that.

It's partially because the people making these shows, much like the people running the schools, think everything has to be dumbed down and toned down for today's youth.  Because of this, anyone with a good idea for a show is turned down by a network or just won't try because they think the network won't accept it.  After all, the networks have no problem picking up some second rate dubbed anime, which can easily be edited or canceled with little to no cost...

The G.I. Jerk song is kinda catchy.  With the exception of Duke, the voices are horrible.  I recorded it this past Saturday because I was curious about it and lost interest when, like many imports, a kid was brought in.  Who da fuck is that and what does he have to do with G.I. Joe?  And why did they make Scarlet skip puberty?  The Joe women were hot because they were all mature and shit.

Xiaolin Shitdown, I mean Showdown, is the little show that couldn't.  Meaning that it could've been better, but it's not and I have a feeling it never will be.  I found two or three episodes that were actually watchable, but have yet to find anymore.  I can't believe such a blah franchise has more than thirteen episodes.

I really want to like TMNT, but I find a huge amount of that show is hit or miss.  Certain storylines and arcs interest me and other episodes just make me change the channel.

The Batman is okay.  Not total garbage.  If it were sandwiched between two shows I really liked, I'd probably watch it.  As is, I only watch when Catwoman or Batgirl appear.  I don't particularly care for it.

I see 4Kids is nuturing a girls cartoon revival, but instead of cool stuff like Jem, She-ra, Beverly Hills Teens, and Maxie's World we have anorexic fairies, Mew Mews, and Bratz.  The Mews I can sorta live with, but it's certainly nothing I wouldn't hesitate sleep in on.  I've admitedly watched some of Winx Club, but as far as I'm concerned, there's no more story to tell.  Bratz is just UGH.

Coconut Bitch, I'm not even giving a chance.  Nigga please.  Pokemon, why the fuck won't you die?  Johnny Test?  What?  Sonic X has me a little bored now and so does Shaman King.  One Piece is meh.  Yu-Gi-Oh is still running on fumes, considering since Marik left, the damn thing's been on filler mode.  And we all know the superior quality of anime filler.  As for Jetix.... hahahaha.  W.I.T.C.H.... what a joke.  Nick needs to hurry up on new episodes of Avatar.  Now THAT would definetely brighten up my morning.

Quote
SwatKats?
The Trembley brothers who created Swatkats were actually the ones (at least partially) responsible for the first Loonatics designs.  Look at them again and they definetely evoke Razor and T-Bone.  But really, I'm pretty sure no visuals of any kind could've saved this show.  Especially since they apparently ripped off people-designs from What's New Scooby-Doo (already dreck in it's own right) and backgrounds from Teen Titans (also dreck) and Batman Beyond.

You should only remember it vaguely...I don't even know if the Cartoon ever aired, and the toys only lasted one wave on the pegs and then where clearaned where they sat for the years. That line came out in 96 and when I was working at KB Toys in 98 they were still there on the pegs.

I like THE BATMAN alot...I didn't think I would having grown up on BTAS and seeing the radical redesgin they used, but I ended up liking it despite myself. I espeically liked the Joker....course to me the Joker is the best supervillian there ever was, is, or ever will be. I've found myself going out of my way to catch The Batman, but more times then not I miss it.

The Batman is *alright* in my book--however I don't like how they phone-in the villian's origins and motives.  Mr. Freeze's was especially bad...  Anyway, the voice work is decent, but there's nothing really dynamic enough about it...  The really sad thing is that if it came out 5-6 years ago, it would have been considered bad by cartoon standards, whereas right now it's one of the only shows out there even trying...  Boo-urns.

I was majorly dissapointed with Mister Freeze. From Brilliant, Angst Ridden professor to Two Bit Mutant thug.  From what I read of the Clayface Two Parter, that seemed like the most interesting Villian debut. I haven't seen all of The Batman, but they do seem to be hinting around about Joker's origin...Jack Napier.

Loonatics certainly was pretty sucktastic. The two characters even remotely like their former counterparts was Duck and Taz. And Taz is the only good character as he NEVER SPEAKS.

I admit the only thing I watch at all is One Piece and occasionally Yugioh, but I stopped watching Yugi regularly after the whole "Darts/Leviathan" crap. One Piece is ok, but I don't see why people dig it so much. I hope Luffie is less of a dumbass in the japanese version.

The thing about One Piece is that the original manga is excellent (though I can't speak for the official English language edition as I've never read it), the anime is not quite as good (awful filler episodes and inconsistent animation quality later in the series), and from what I've seen of it the English dub is an absolute abomination. I can totally understand how someone seeing it for the first time on Fox would wonder why so many people are in love with One Piece; 4Kids totally annihilated it.

The commercials alone already make me want to hate Johnny Test.  I've never seen the actual show, just the promos with the snot-nosed little punk going "Wow.  Cool!"  There's nothing worse than characters having to tell the audience when something's suppose to be cool.  If it's cool, the audience should already know and thusly it should go unsaid.  If you have to tell them it's cool, it's probably lame.

And Toonami, I feel the need to mention I can't even sit through that anymore.  JLU is the only watchable show but because I don't watch other things on the block like I used to, I miss it nearly all the time.  I don't even know what they show on most of Miguzi anymore.  I got tired of the damn Teen Titans invading every damn block.  It's just as well.  I watch too much TV anyway.  I guess it's a blessing in disguise that the new crop of televised cartoons amount to shit.

What's with anime that are longer than 26 episodes being filled with horrible filler shit and becoming boring after a while? The japanese have no problem making short series but anything longer starts to reek of suck. DBZ, Inu Yasha, Naruto, One Piece. Bleach is starting to get long, I have a feeling it will catch teh AIDS soon too. :(

I don't think it's that they're over 26 episodes, it's that they're over a hundred.  I don't think most concepts, no matter how cool or innovative or entertaining they are, can really surivive far past 100 episodes.  They should just save money, skip filler, and wait for the manga to catch up.

It also drives me nuts when anime has massive plotholes or questions that are not answered or wrapped up in the end. Or the ending is confusing as hell and really screwed up. This happens quite a lot in anime btw, I guess they expect you to figure out shit by yourself.

After seeing the end of Paranoia Agent, I understand most of it, but I still don't know what Slugger and the black ooze was from. Was everyone having a mass mutual hallucination of a black sludge destroying the city because of something affecting their heads, like LSD being dumped in the city's water? Or was slugger some kind of virus or mutant or shapeshifter or alien that feeds off human suffering and pain and manifests itself as whatever you fear the most?

I like the second idea but have a feeling it's the first.

I don't mind the occassional question or two left open-ended, or minor details that we can deduct for ourselves, but huge, stark gashed-open endings bother me.  PA was great until they made that cop go all crazy.  At first that was funny, but then when I realized that's where they were going with it, it just got old and tiresome.  Why does it have to be something completely out of this world?  People do crazy shit everyday.  Not a month goes by that we don't hear about some weird crime and think "holy shit, can that really happen".  Shonen Bat being a product of a childhood trauma wasn't so bad but that fucking ooze destroying the entire city?  Talk about being pulled from their ass.  PA copped out big time.  The episode with the ghosts that chatted on the internet though... that was pure fucking gold.  That was done right.  Even the one with the gossipy ladies... there were several good episodes and then.... it ended like *that*.  =\

There are certainly shitty shows on Cartoon Network, but you can't really say the channel itself is inherently shitty. Well, except for the fact that they continue to air the latest, lamest incarnations of the Transformers franchise. Cartoon Network is indeed shitty in that respect.

I don't know what's with the Japanese and symbolism. Some is fine, but with some anime it's like trying to watch the Matrix sequels.

A good portion of the anime they air is shitty.  Most of their homegrown, inbred cartoons are shitty.  TF shows are doubly shitty, which isn't their fault, but they run it on the channel.  So I conclude it to be shitty in general.  Only things I watch on the channel these days are Justice League and Harvey Birdman, and that's if I remember to tune in.

No, I wanted to kill myself for first wasting the time/money watching Reloaded and then being naively hopeful for Revolutions to patch it up and thus blowing another instance of time/money.  I had the sneaking suspicion they would suck and suck hard, yet I did not heed my instinct.

Those dudes are freaks.  I saw an interview with them were they spend most of the hour playing with their shoe laces.  I wouldn't be suprised if they stole the idea for the first matrix and then had to come up with the material themselves for the other two, hence the crap.

I kinda felt that, too.  Things shouldn't differ so radically in quality.  I guess in Lucas's case, you could blame senility or Willow or something for St*r WarzzZZ taking the fart but the Matrix sequels were far more timely in comparision.  The Matrix is a modern day classic and the other two are uber-shitty.  Not even "shitty but watchable", just shitty.  Just plain ol' shitty-shitty.  That's just wrong.

And I remember the shoes.  Damn, that bothered me.  Stop playing with your goddamn shoe.  That's when I knew they were truly freaks.

Good point.  I'm surprised that some of the Nick originals (Avatar, Catscratch, Danny Phantom) lately have actually been better than the CN originals (just about anything, really).  And I loved Rocko's Modern Life but something about Camp Lazlo, even if it is by the same guy, is just so woefully unwatchable.

I seem to remember recommending GitS to Z2SO4...

So then, does that mean Full Metal Alchemist is shitty? Because, although I haven't been watching the CN run, I did like the show quite a bit. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was one of, if not the best new anime series in the '03-'04 season.

Note that "good portion" != all.  FMA is good, and I enjoy it (otherwise it wouldn't land regularly on my Netflix queue), but it isn't anywhere near what I consider to be the best anime of all time as many others hold it to be.  And I really don't care for the vast majority of stuff that's on the channel, but you also have to consider that such is the nature of a subjective argument.

Haha. Way back, I also recommended he watch s-CRY-ed, because I liked it. And he liked it. But now it just seems like garbage. What's up with that?

Same thing happened with Witch Hunter Robin. I was really into it when it was being fansubbed, but when CN started airing it I couldn't even bear to look.

You're probably a dub hater and just didn't realize it.

But if it makes you feel better, I never could get into Scry-ed, either.  I don't even remember anything about it other than I gave it two eps before I dropped back and punted.  And I never gave WH Robin the first chance...why, I don't know.

Before we ditch the topic of CN, I just want to mention, for the sake of pissing Toe off, that Codename: Kids Next Door is the shittiest thing to ever come out of someones sphincter.  I for one am surprised that CN managed to fit as much cr0n as they did on that turd...

Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy kicks ass though...  You can't change my mind on that one.
Title: New "Loonatics" Designs
Post by: joe on Oct 03, 2005, 04:52:47 PM
I think Grim peaked around the time of Attack of the Clowns and Chocolate Sailor, and it's been on a steady decline ever since. Episodes used to strike a perfect balance between stupid and funny, and lately it's been leaning heavily towards just plain stupid. That's not to say there haven't been a few decent ones recently, but it's way more miss than hit now, in my opinion.

As for being a dub hater, you might be right. I try not to make broad generalizations, but it seems to me like a lot of dub work really does sap the charm out of certain shows.

Take Samurai 7, for example. I stopped watching fansubs as soon it was licensed, because I was really enjoying it and figured it would be a worthy addition to the shelf, but after viewing Funimation's dub I can't for the life of me remember what I liked so much about the show.

If Japanese wasn't both so grating and unfriendly to my casual viewing (i.e., watching over a ham sandwich or while simultaneously reading the newspaper or walking the treadmill), I might watch everything subbed.

Although when I'm watching anime and doing nothing else, I'll still use the English but also run the subs at the same time.  I don't trust my hearing, so that way I can glance down and catch something I might have missed.  I'm just anal that way.

Is Toe in denial about KND?  I dunno about Zero, but I've actually sat through some of it.  It really is awful.  Someone told me somewhere that one of those kids is suppose to be Australian.  If so, that show now deserves the death penalty for mangling an accent that badly.

It's the beginning of a great story arc, but the dub already seems to be messing it up. The arc depends a lot on the whether or not you'll be moved by the acting, but I don't see myself being moved with these performances... they are decent for humorous moments, though, I think.

Oh yeah, and they didn't apply any distortion to the voices of these guys wearing gas masks. They're supposed to be weird, scary, and evil.... Also, the English actors for those guys acted quite differently from the Japanese version. Actually, all the English voices do... to the point where it seems that they're changing the characters...

Ahh, I dunno why I talk about this stuff here. But, in conclusion, Naruto should probably be taken off the air and replaced with more Justice League Unlimited.
Title: New "Loonatics" Designs

I believe you that dubbing does make all the difference.  Is Naruto suppose to be so damn irritating though?  I'm thinking Lime from SMJ all over again, and when they're already that damn annoying, dubbing almost *never* helps.  The actress/actor/whatever always goes for a grating stupid voice of some kind.
