Title: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.
Post by: B E C K on Jun 01, 2016, 05:14:08 AM
I think Sunny Mabrey would've made a great Sue Storm.  She probably still would, but she's forty now and we know how Hollywood hates women forty and over.  As someone who has always enjoyed sexy older women on my screen, this has always mades me :(

‘Begin Again’ Director Bashes Keira Knightley’s Acting (http://www.thewrap.com/begin-again-director-bashes-keira-knightleys-acting/)  Ha ha, fuck her.  I liked her in Bend in Like Beckham.  Then I realized she was just playing herself.  I find her so obnoxious now.  Also, Beckham was a tool for not doing a cameo in that movie.

I've been eyeing a certain purse at Kohl's and added it to my cart at the store's website the other day, applying online coupons to the price.  It was on sale for Memorial Day, reduced by about fourteen dollars.  I decided, as I often do, to just leave it in the cart and not buy it after all.  It pains me to pay for shipping and I couldn't find anything to give me free shipping.  I went back to the page to see if there were new sales.  That purse is now reduced by over twenty dollars.  I can only conclude Kohl's hates our troops.

We've been having heavy rain in Texas.  The Brazos river had some record flooding.  You can google pics.  Brazos is the Spanish word for "arms."  There's your fun fact for the day.

Twiggy is crying at my door for food.  I'm going to go feed him now.

Anytime I see a Funko Pop figure, I get the urge to grab it and fling it across the room.

I watched a snail the other day.  He was much faster than you and I probably gave him credit for.

The wrath of the Magilla stans is far and wide.  Justice for Harambe: Mother harassed online after gorilla shot dead. (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36416350)  The lesson is clearly to pray someone who shares the same name as you isn't involved in shit like this.  I feel sorry for that other Michelle Gregg.

And Wait...there are purses that cost more then 20 dollars?

Don't get any ideas.  I'm not talking about a Kate Spade or Longchamp or whatever.  Just a cheap straw purse priced at $60 although I won't pay anything over $30 for it.

Why don't you like Pop Vinyls?

Their cutesy, generic looks just enrage me.

This is a good quote:

In an age where people lop off heads and drown folks in cages and burn others alive, this is what offends? Is a mighty blue alien choke-slamming, well, anybody what you would classify as "casual violence"? Where does stuff like that happen every day? And if said alien was choke slamming a dude, would it have been okay?

Dumping articles shitting on "Me Before You," who I nominate for Most Offensive Film of the Year.  Congratulations!

People Are Annoyed About How “Me Before You” Represents Disability (https://www.buzzfeed.com/rosebuchanan/campaigners-are-pissed-about-the-representation-of-disabled)
‘I’m not a thing to be pitied’: the disability backlash against Me Before You (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/jun/02/me-before-you-disabled-backlash-not-pitied)
http://screenprism.com/insights/article/me-before-you-offensive-to-people-who-are-disabled

tl;dr - "Me Before You" is a weepy romance between a rich guy in a wheelchair who believes that death is better than disability and offs himself despite finding love, leaving Daenerys Targaryen his fortune.  Movie had the gall to advertise with #liveboldly.  People in wheelchairs are sick of this message that they're better off dead taking precedence over positive depictions of people in wheelchairs.

"Do you have the book the book 'Me Before You'?"

"Yes."

"Oh I didn't see it on the shelf. Where is it?"

"At the end of a long ass waiting list behind the rest of the sheep that just discovered they made a movie out of it."

*Sigh.* I wish I could say that...I really do.

Just curious, but does Kondo's book still have a waiting list?  Either one of them?  (Spark Joy and Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up)

Re: This Orlando thing... I mean, I'm more anti-gun than pro-gun by a mile, but I'm disturbed by the lack of information on the anti-gun side of things.  Can we google shit before making an argument?  Even my lazy ass googled it.  I googled the gun, what model it was, what it can do.  Like Seth MacFarlane, as one example.  Someone with a mass platform asking for an automatic weapon ban.  And then what do you get?  Someone, usually a gun person, going "but it wasn't an automatic weapon" and someone else will reply "omg, ppl died, dumbass, who cares if it was automatic."  NO.  To make a law about something, the semantics are fucking important.  We all know people died.  That's why we're having this fucking discussion in the first place.

Also in FL, a kid got dragged away by a gator.  The reasonable response?  DERRR, LETS KILL FOUR GATORS AND CHECK THEIR BODIES.  Even the keyboard warriors knew that boy was probably not eaten given the outlined circumstances.  Divers found him at the bottom of the lagoon near where he was pulled in.  http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/15/us/alligator-attacks-child-disney-florida/  Supposedly, despite statements otherwise, there ARE No Swimming signs for the water the child was in.  In some comment sections I've seen, there's a big fucking debate about what "No Swimming" means.  It means keep the fuck out of the water.  It's like the fucking gun thing with people failing reading comprehension all over the place: "Well, it doesn't say 'no wading.'"  Or "it doesn't say because of alligators."  It's not that literal.  It's a sign.  You're supposed to read a sign differently.  It's implied.  These are the same assholes that park in No Standing areas, mark my words.

Man, combined with the death of that singer, this has not been Florida's week.

I don't know how to feel when I google a writer prolific enough to have his own Wikipedia page and he has a section called "Filmography" with a list of on-screen works based on his books.  I guess technically it's the correct term to use but it kinda implies he actually worked on all of those works himself, like screenwriting or what have you.

Wow, though, that guy can sure churn books out fast.  But with several series, he probably has ghost writers I'd imagine.

Yeah, pretty much if says "By James Patterson & _______" then he didn't write shit and just slapped his name on it. More sales for a less know author. Big ass chell for James for doing no work. Only one that loses is the public when they wonder how their favorite author suddenly got so shitty.

I heard that Mallrats 2 is going to be a TV series now instead of a movie.

Which is like... how long can you realistically drag out the whole hanging around a mall premise? How many mall-centric stories are there to tell?

I guess we'll find out. Or not.
Title: Re: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.
Post by: Rama on Jun 22, 2016, 09:42:56 PM
That's only because Universal wouldn't green light the movie, but would green light a TV series. I don't expect anymore content...just that content played out to it's extreme.
Title: Re: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.
Post by: B E C K on Jun 23, 2016, 03:58:09 PM
I'll give Mallrats one thing: it felt relevant for the era it came out in. I can't see how a sequel fits in this day and age. Do kids still hang out at the mall? So many of them are closed now.

I had to drive from Plano to Emory today (1 hour, 20 minutes each way) to help my hoarding mother move stuff from her storage unit to her new smaller storage unit. I smell like the ocean now but the stanky ass part not the fun part.

Highlight was definitely the friend she had come help, who was 79, and his criticisms of the pile of nonsense."Ain't nothing worse then an artist moving. Shit on top of shit on top of shit" "Not sure if this is an heirloom or a Stalin or what." "Here's some more artsy-fartsy crap."

Get your mom Marie Kondo's book (https://www.onekingslane.com/live-love-home/marie-kondo-book-declutter/).  Disclosure: I'm a total Kondo devotee and Merla also Kondos.  (Using her method gets referred to as 'to kondo,' kondoing or KMing.)  I've already told my parents, to paraphrase: "All of this wall-to-wall shit you own is YOUR stuff but understand most of it means nothing to me.  If you die before I do and I have to deal with it, I'm taking some of your things for me to treasure and getting rid of the rest."

My mom's already starting getting rid of stuff, too.  It's not the correct method, but it's a start and I'll take it.  The other day I was all "see all of these stacks of magazines?  That shit's going into the recycle bin if you die.  An issue of O Magazine from April 2012 means nothing to me.  See that row of bargain bin DVDs you bought from Walmart and all of these books you keep hoarding but don't read?  I'm taking all that shit to Half-Price Books if you die.  See those Rubbermaid containers that are full of fabric?  If you die before I do, I'm giving those to your sister and calling it a day.  Half of that glass you've collected is getting its ass sent back to Goodwill."

She doesn't like me telling her "if you die" because what I mean is "if you die before I do."  Which sounds like a horrible thing to say to one's mother, I know, but I'm being a realist and I'm looking at things both ways.  I don't want Merla and my mom dealing with stacks of shit in my room if I die.  I think I've gotten rid of close to 40% of my possessions.  And if she dies before I do, I would be even more broken than I am now and there's NO way I could deal with all of her things.  She hasn't read the book yet (it's on her to-do list) but she's beginning to embrace the spirit of it.

Sorry for the blog post there.  :poo:

I'm a semi-horder. After awhile I have a fit and throw stuff away, put it in a box and throw it in the outlying storage shed, or consolidate it to the point of making it manageable. And then it starts anew.

My brother on the other hand has boxes of old newspapers...like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, except he hasn't read and cataloged them yet beyond publishing date. He's way worse than me. At least most of the crap I have lying around has some amount of resale value.

I've been watching Preacher, never read the comic, and they really hooked me with the first couple episodes, but now I find myself losing interest.

And I think it might have everything to do with the over-the-top, goofy cartoon violence. As I understand it the comic was known for being excessively gory, but during the transition to TV, that somehow turned into Itchy and Scratchy.

It's a little disappointing, because all the entertainment blogs were hyping this show as the next big thing leading up to the premier, and now basically no one is saying anything about it.

I'll probably finish watching the first season, at least.

I haven't watched anything on network television that isn't news in a while. And that only sparingly...could we just have Troll and Hildabeast settle their campaigns by mortal combat? Not the game, just literally beat each other to death?

Anyway, the towering intellect responsible for marketing plastic quick connects for garden hoses should get the Nobel Prize for keeping me from having a heart attack. I'm used to using them in medical equipment but only discovered that they made them for water hoses last month. Best thing ever.

Here's another random thought... I want people on TV to stop using the words "body shaming."  I want them to stop because they don't know what it means.  Some fitness woman's trending on Facebook because she was criticized for dressing like a slut at a wedding.  She dressed like a club tramp. (http://uproxx.com/webculture/fitness-instructor-dress-wedding/2/)  And "body shaming" is actually being used in conjunction to this.

Nobody's picking on her because they're jealous that she's all fit and lean.  The hate has nothing to do with her actual body and she is not being shamed for her body.  She wore an inappropriate outfit that surely upstaged the bride, a wedding no-no.  She's also vain as fuck, with her ten million selfies and her sad attempt to trend a hashtag that promotes her own name in the name of "kindness."  Even her excuse sucked, whining about how it was 90 degrees outside so she had to wear that tiny, skin-tight outfit.  So why would you wear something tight instead of something airy and loose-fitted?  No way you didn't have a river in your ass-crack.  She clearly works very hard to be that fit but someone else's wedding is not the day to purposely call attention to it.

Her vanity becomes all the more obvious in that she actually expected different reactions than the ones she's getting.

Here's another piece of important news trending on Facebook.  Penny from Big Bang posts picture of her dogs' asses on the American flag for Independence Day. (http://www.onbreaking.com/entertainment/kaley-cuoco-criticized-independence-day-photo-three-dogs-sitting-american-flag/)  Penny stans insist it's actually a patriotic towel but she issued an apology and no where did she say it was a towel.  The white border near the stars part makes it look the part of the flag a pole goes into, so it really does look like a flag.  But the real funny part?  She didn't even take that picture.  Her pet sitter took it.  Ha ha.  So it was two brains that failed Flag Etiquette 101.

There's a fan-edit of the Ghostbusters video game from a few years ago that presents it as an ad hoc Ghostbusters III. Seeing as it was actually written by Akroyd and Ramis and voice-acted by all the orginal actors, it may be the closest we ever get to an actual GBIII...unless they wind up hunting for the ghost of Egon. But I don't know if that'd be totally horrible, totally awesome, or both.

The only problem I read people having with it was the lack of optimal camera angles since everything's from a single perspective. But it may yet prove better than the new one.

I have the game, but I got to a point early on that I couldn't figure out how to pass. So I decided that it took way too much time to play just to get the story out of it when I didn't find it that fun.

I tried to download that thing so I could throw it on my server and watch it when I got ready to, since my internet is slow as molasses in January and streaming is a pain. But it doesn't like me downloading it by itself, either, so screw all of it.

It's been awhile, but it was during the street battle in the early going. I got tired of slogging through it and trying to figure out which way to go. I hate not knowing what I'm supposed to go in a game.

I had no idea what you were talking about when you mentioned Huey Lewis, but I didn't question it, I just kept reading. Today someone else made a similar off-handed remark about that, so I had to look it up.

All these years, and I never knew that was a thing. I mean, you can kind of hear it. It gets a lot dicier, though, when you learn that they originally wanted Huey Lewis to do the Ghostbusters theme.

But I wouldn't know any of that without Wikipedia.

You didn't get very far. I think that is even before you fight Stay Puft.

It is kinda funny that Ley Lines are important to the plot of the game. So much so that they even lay out a drawing of the ley line on a map of New York to pinpoint the source of the ghost activity. Which sounds an awful lot like what they did in the New Ghostbusters movie. Course in the game it centered on Central Park instead of some hotel.

So boo-hoo, Hulu will be pay only (http://www.androidauthority.com/hulu-killing-free-service-708617/).  Is anyone here actually affected by this?  When I tried Hulu years ago, you had to pay to get it on your TV.  Outside of a free trial.  And it was a shit-sausage on my Wii at the time.  Sure, I could just hook up my comp to my TV but I don't want to bother with that.  Imo, that already makes it "not free."  Crackle's free.  It's lousy but it's free.  Maybe making it a pay service only will mean they'll stop pretending they have episodes of shit instead of a bunch of trailers and clips.  And more than once I tried to watch a show only to be redirected to the website for the show.  Fuck you, Hulu.  I imagine an influx of cash can only improve them at this point.

Femme!busters bombed busters, I guess.  Although Sony's all "no, dude.  no, dude, we merched the fuck outta that shit so it's not that bad."  Well, not as hard as Big Fucking Giant or Fucking Why Would You Remake This Ben Hur.  But, perhaps a silver lining in the current talk about animated projects. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ghostbusters-box-office-loss-sequel-unlikely-918515)  Always interested in animation, of course.  Whether or not it'll be any good is another beast entirely, but I'm still interested.  Now, someone insisted that Femme!busters actually did worse than Tarzan, the latter being a more definite domestic bomb.  So I looked up the numbers on IMDB:

Femme!busters
Budget: $144,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend: $46,018,755 (USA) (15 July 2016)
Gross: $123,933,072 (USA) (19 August 2016)

Tarzan
Budget: $180,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend: $38,135,000 (USA) (1 July 2016)
Gross: $125,440,608 (USA) (19 August 2016)

Ghostboobsters was a bigger opener than Tarzan but not by much and then still fell short on it on total domestic take to date, although neither domestic take is that hot given those over-inflated budgets.  Shit, you could make 5 Deadpools outta their combined budgets!  Why the fuck are the budgets so goddamn high?  Does the catering bill include caviar and foie gras?  FFS.  Neither one made back their budget in domestic.  Both bombs!  Worth noting tho':

Ghostbusters:
$193,786,077 (Worldwide) (15 August 2016)

Tarzan:
$312,750,024 (Worldwide) (4 August 2016)

This makes Tarzan actually look impressive, but we don't know how much of that tally is considered an actual profit given that international bo takes a higher cut.  Never mind marketing costs for either picture.  Sony squawks about merchandising so, yeah, merch is probably the only thing that kept their heads up on this one.  Funny how Tarzan is being made as a huge bomb and Ghostbusters' failure is almost being kept under the rug.  I know if I went and told 'casuals' that it bombed, they'd react with disbelief.

--Cunty rant below--

The sad thing Ghostbusters will result in another "dem womens can't carry a pict-ture" moment when the casting was uninspired to begin with.  Is there any crossover appeal between fans of Ghostbusters and the audience who likes Melissa McCarthy enough to give her hits like The Heat?  I liked The Heat and I still didn't want her in Ghostbusters.  Even so, the picture was so risk adverse.  It should've killed Melissa off and made her into a ghost.  And then the picture was from the writer of The Heat AND the director of The Heat and written by both of them?

You know what, by themselves, none of those are bad.  Nothing wrong with the writer of The Heat writing Ghostbusters or the director of The Heat directing Ghostbusters.  But... if you put sugar, flour, and butter together, you're gonna get a cookie.  Even if you do it out of order, you're still gonna get a fucking cookie.  Don't put the same ingredients together and expect to get something different.  Don't paint it with green frosting and call it Ghostbusters.  No one wanted "The Heat but with ghosts."

And then this whole fucking film just felt so rude to minorities in the whole "Let's just cast one.  Let's put her on the side of the poster while the three white chicks gets the middle.  Let's not make her a scientist because black people don't science."  What were they thinking?  When minorities are buying a huge number of the movie tickets?  People can argue that wasn't what it was but that's what it was because it happens over and over and over again.  No Latinas, no Native Americans, no Asians?  Not one of those?  And we can say "Nuri, stop talking about race bloob bloob bloob" but how much fucking fun could we have had with that?  Just in my culture alone there's so many stories and kooky superstitions and at least one curandera.  There's more than enough supernatural stuff to make a fresh narrative that would've put butts in seats.  Goddammit, I almost want to write my own fuckin' Ghostbusters... but I won't 'cause omg fuckin' ghosts.

Regarding race in casting, I think you hit the nail on the head on it when you mentioned using the race of a character as a story enhancement (see, I read the rant!) rather than stroking the pelt of the political correctness beast. There racial stuff we can all laugh at without malice because we're all in on the joke, but creators are so scared to go there for fear of alienating segments of their audience (RE: losing money) or having SJW/keyboard commandos organize against it (RE: losing more money) that they can't bring themselves to do it in any sort of mainstream manner. So they go to old cliche crap, like a fat black chick doing the "no you di'in't" head wag, expecting people to find it funny for the millionth time.

Go out on a fricking limb for a change. Subvert expectations: imagine Egon as the exact same character, except played by Cedric the Entertainer or some-such. Then you open up a whole new dimension to explore with everyone being amazed every time he opens his mouth. Introduce subtle innuendo: hint that Slimer is the ghost of Liberace so Peter can off-handedly wonder about that whole "he slimed me" incident. Try less utilized tropes: make Janine Chinese so she can go all tiger mom on Peck.

But anyway. There is so much we can laugh at without even being "racial" with it. Human beings still find a lot of the same things to be funny despite the regular shit we put ourselves through. It's such a simple and profound truth. You don't have to pander. Just be funny.

Leslie Jones has her moments but she's not as funny as she could be, methinks.  And I hate how they farmed three out of four Ghostbusters from SNL when SNL on the whole hasn't been funny for years.  It'd be different if we were in the early 2004 or something and we were casting Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

My chick!busters would've been, like, Anjelah Johnson, Ali Wong, and Debra Digiovanni as the three scientists or whatever (I don't think I'd make them all scientists but maybe one as a science-related entrepreneur or something related to science that brings in the monies), Sofia Vergara as the non-sciency one (like a hairdresser or something, just completely involved by chance) who joins them and bring back Annie Potts as Janine.  Bad guy can be some beefcake but NOT a block of wood like Chris Hemsworth.  At least get Efron or Liam Hemsworth for crying out loud.  Or Ryan Reynolds?  Somebody with some charm.  OG Ghostbusters play themselves but they're old and they can't do this shit anymore.  One of them's dead—guess which one—and Ackroyd or someone keeps having heart attacks so Ernie Hudson and Venkman are trying to keep up but they's hella old or whatevs.  Maybe one of the scientists (Anjelah?) is a colleague or in the same department that one of the OG!busters was in and she sorta stumbles in on their shit and intervenes, dragging the other two with her somehow.  Sofia happens to be on the scene or otherwise has her finger in the pie and the others have no choice by to bring her along (for information or something, I dunno).  At the end of the movie, the three ladies take over the ghostbusting business while being mentored and assisted by the OG!busters and "the bad guy" ends up being their new Janine.  Because people love that "redeemed bad guy becomes defanged helper" shit.

So to explain some things casting-wise... I would not have casted Melissa because I think she's sorta polarizing.  You cast Melissa to star in a Melissa movie as Melissa.  Because people only see her as Melissa now.  Her strength is not pretending to be someone else.  People like Anjelah, Ali, and Debra all have specials streaming on Netflix, so I'd do Netflix integrated advertisement somehow.  They are funny but not as known as Wiig or someone like that, so it's easier to pretend they're other characters.  Then people like Sofia—super sexy and one of the highest paid TV actresses in a comedy—and whoever the bad guy is—good-looking, charming, well-known guy to get more girl-asses in seats while the Sofia-type gets more guy-asses—ramp up their talk show appearances and earn those big sacks of money.  OG!busters bring the OG!fans and Murray's still got it.  He's was one of the best parts of the Jungle Book.  Let him be Venkman, at least for a couple of scenes.

^ Wow, that was long.  I didn't mean for it to be that fuckin' long.  Shit.   I guess I was on a roll or something.  What would you guys have done if you were in charge of chick!busters?  Rama probably would've casted Rosario Dawson as a Ghostbuster.  She'd look cute with those giant Jillian Holtzmann goggles on her head.
Title: Re: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.
Post by: Rama on Aug 31, 2016, 09:17:29 AM
In a kinda twist, three of the original Ghostbusters where suppose to be farmed from SNL too. Murray, Aykroyd, and Eddie Murphy. But Murphy didn't want to do it and the role when to Ernie Hudson instead...who had his role cut down to next to nothing once Murphy backed out. There are story board that show Winston at the Sedwick hotel sequence where they caught Slimer early in the movie.

Course the movie was originally suppose to be be a vehicle for Belushi and Aykroyd...like Blues Brothers before it, but that got scrapped when Belushi died. John Candy and Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) were also suppose to be in the flick, but it didn't pan out. Ramis and Rick Moranis both came from SCTV. Which is like SNL, but Canadian.

And I actually thought Chris Hemsworth was one the better parts of the movie. Course if you had made a female that dumb you would have been called sexist. YAY for double standards!
Title: Re: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.
Post by: B E C K on Sep 01, 2016, 12:30:10 AM
My beef isn't really them coming from SNL but the period of SNL they're coming from.  The women they casted are not Aykroyd, Murray, or Murphy circa the 80's, that's for sure.  Again, it would've been completely different if we got this film ten years ago with Fey, Poehler, and Maya Rudolph.

And I actually thought Chris Hemsworth was one the better parts of the movie. Course if you had made a female that dumb you would have been called sexist. YAY for double standards!

Well, there aren't enough female roles in films as it is, generally speaking.  I'm willing to bet that the majority of the women's roles that are there are for dumb women vs. the percentage of men's roles populated by dumb men.  It's the same reason why people were mad about Leslie Jones' role in chick!busters not being a scientist or Finn being a space janitor.  It's nothing against transit employees or janitors, but the types of roles black women and men receive.  The context of the thing is actually the issue.

Well, it's a popularly-known fact that black people are generally too dumb to be scientists, isn't it? I mean, with the exception of people like Mike Tyson deGrass or whatever the hell his damn name is.

Seriously, that seems to be what they're trying to tell us.

Also, didn't add this above because I wondered if it should go in the anime thread instead, but our family friend also has a fairly nice smart tv.*  I was watching some of my anime off of it and it makes me better understand why some people are all "argh, bluray rips only arg1efbl!  u fuckin streaming plebe" while other people don't care.  I don't have anything high-end nor even large in screen size at home.  (No bigger than 40".)  I can dl low res anime and watch it fine through my home set-up.  Of course it's not some crystal clear, perfect picture but it looks no different imo than when I would record cartoons from tv onto a vhs way back when and I'm fine with it.  BUT... this fancy tv triggers my autism.  I can see the aliasing in the picture or whatever you'd call that and have to will myself to ignore it.

*In case anyone wondered why she has a nice smart tv but basic cable, she only has cable to watch the occasional broadcast program.

Yeah, watching SD content on an HD display can be discombobulating. I fired up the first episode of Thunderbolt Fantasy on Crunchyroll (free) yesterday, and after initially having it at full screen, I decided to switch back to windowed mode.

Seems like an okay show, though. The super-cliché action/drama premise is offset by the fact that they're a bunch of fucking puppets!

I kept thinking about World Police.

I don't download TV anime at 1080p...from what I understand, most of it is upconverted to full HD. So I download at 720p, since the files are smaller. Plus I generally watch it on a 32" HDTV, but now that I have a much larger screen it scales up well. It's a nice compromise.

The trick is downloading. I can't stream, so I wind up collecting shows that I should delete. Seriously, what the heck is Ben-To still doing on my server? It wasn't even good!
Title: Re: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.

Maybe I'm only kidding myself, but I feel like I can see a difference between 720p and 1080p anime. Although in certain cases you really don't want that kind of clarity, because it only serves to exacerbate already cruddy animation (Looking at you, JoJo).

Actually, a perfect example would be Stardust Crusaders. They did the intro in 3D, and it looks glorious at 1080p. Then you switch over to the traditional 2D animation of the show itself, and you might as well just not even bother.

I was rewatching Aoharu x Kikanjuu on her TV and most of the episodes I have are probably what would be considered the standard size.*  Not too tiny, but you can see jagged lines on her larger TV.  However, for some reason, when I was initially dl'ing the series, one of the 13 episodes turned out to only be half the episode (god knows why).  I had to replace it from a different source but the second source happened to have the episode much larger in scale, bitrate, etc.  It's like Ep 1 52 MB then Ep 2 247 MB.  I daresay I can't really tell the difference at home but the second episode looked so much prettier on her TV with nice, crisp lineart for the characters.  I also saw Initial D Legend 1 on her TV which is around similar size (274 MB but nearly thrice the length) and the still lineart looked kinda gorgeous.  I was marveling at the lines on the characters' shirts for heaven's sake.

Then I watched Persuasion (Jane Austen movie w/ Amanda Root and Cirian Hinds) and I wanted to laugh.  Our friend's TV's like a magic box, exposing which shots in the movie are completely fake.  Other shots make it feel like a true stage production.  Watching at home, I feel like I'm inside Kellynch Hall with the characters but on our friend's TV, it's obvious they're on a set!  I've seen this movie about a hundred times but never could tell at home!  Certain scenes where Amanda Root's riding in a carriage or when she and some of the other characters are walking along the beach, you can tell there's, like, a screen behind them or something playing a moving background.  Persuasion was filmed on a modest TV budget so its not surprising but it's still freakin' funny.

Then that makes two of us.  At least when I'm watching stuff on a fancier TV, apparently.  Kinda reminds me of music.  I used to be content with 128 kbps once upon a time.  But that was back when I had a hand-me-down MP3 player with a 64 mb capacity.

*I also watched the latest Mob Psycho 100 on her tv but the difference wasn't was distinguishable as with AxK, which is designed to be "prettier" with both the characters and background art.

Frame rate might have something to do with what you're experiencing. Most HD televisions default to a motion "correction" feature that's meant to make everything appear more fluid and "lifelike". This works really well for live sports, but completely fucks with anything that was shot on film. For instance, if you watched an old black and white movie, everything suddenly looks like it was shot on home video. Something to do with taking the source 24 frames per second and creating new frames between existing frames to make everything flow more "naturally".

People were complaining about this when Peter Jackson released those 48fps versions of his Hobbit movies, saying that it made all the actors look like hokey cosplayers.

*Sorry, I should clarify that he actually did shoot those films at 48fps, but the end result has the same undesirable effect.

Am I guilty of mansplaining now?
Title: Re: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.
Post by: B E C K on Sep 11, 2016, 06:53:59 AM
No, mansplaining would've been, like, explaining to me what a MB was or what you meant by 720p and 1080p.  It's usually an unprompted, tenuously-related explanation of something.  Like when I called about my internet being down and the Time Warner guy immediately mansplained what a router was.  And I was all "it's not my fucking router, you stupid fuck.  i said fuck all about my wireless network.  it's the fucking internet, asshole.  do you know what a fuckin' modem is?  all dem fucking blinky lights done is gone, fuckface" but I said all that in, like, the nicest, non-aggressive way possible. :D

Somewhat related to what I just said, but our family friend I mentioned above had to have Time Warner cable put in because that's the only company the apartment complex does business with.  She had me try and set up her Chromecast, which I failed at.  I couldn't figure it out.  The Chromecast was still trying to read her old wireless network so after pulling out clumps of my hair, I decided to try and trick it by renaming her wireless network the old name the Chromecast was searching for.  But I when I went in to do so, I realized it wasn't the same network name she had given me.  I went into her den to look at the physical set up and found a router AND a modem-router combination.  I was all "did TW give you both of these" and she was all "yeah."  She has two wireless networks.  Teh fuck?  It just occurred to me that maybe she's being charged for two pieces of equipment.  If so, nice scam, TW.  I told her to call TW but she hasn't done it yet.

And in the end, she didn't even need the Chromecast because, like I said above, she has this fancy smart TV.  Once I realized that, I was all "FUCK, what the fuck am I dicking around with this Chromecast for?"  So I unplugged the thing and just got the TV connected to her new network.  It has Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Amazon, FB, and everything she needs on it.  Don't know why she was trying to use the Chromecast.  I don't think she uses anything specific to the Chromecast that's not already installed on her television.  (http://www.rabbitinasuit.com/emoticons/R-T/shrug2.gif)

Yeah I had to kill the auto-motion crap on mine. Everything looked like a soap opera.

I think a lot of people underestimate the need for post processing through their televisions. One of the reasons that I went with a Samsung TV rather than a Vizio was due to that company's superior video processing, which helps a lot in upconversion, particularly for SD and lower. Yes, I still have a ton of crap from VHS days that I want to see and not regret. And it works great with 720p upconverts. And I love that Plex was built in...all I had to do was plug in an Ethernet cord and wham ba-lam I'm in like Flint.

Oh, yeah, and on Ambler Heard again... the buzz is that she's donating her settlement to charity.  Which is sooo fake.  Come on, lady, your lies are smacking you in the face and it's time to attempt to save your career.  She's dating a billionaire now, btw, so seven million is chump change to play with the public's heartstrings and earn her some good pr.  Also, it was supposed to be donated to a battered women's charity but is now going elsewhere.  I wonder why... (partial screen shot from DM article's comments sections)

screenshot-about-charity-annuity.jpg

Following up on this, I just read that Johnny donated the money to the two charities directly, which entitles him to a fat tax write-off.  I also wonder if that fudges up Ambler benefiting from the supposed annuities.  No wonder she's mad.

EDIT: http://wealthmanagement.com/high-net-worth/johnny-depp-s-charitable-divorce-settlement
tl;dr according to that article, he likely wouldn't receive any sort of deduction because of reasons.

I'm looking for a link that talks more about the potential annuity.  I wonder if he's stuffing that up for her by (1) donating in his name or (2) making payments instead of donating in bulk or a combination of 1 and 2.

In looking up St*r WarzzZZ stuff, I found a cool GI Joe article.

'G.I. Joe': The Story of the Cartoon That Sold Wartime Heroics to a Generation of Kids (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/gi-joe-tv-show-oral-928423).  It's got some blurbs by the cast members, TV writer Ron Friedman, and some Hasbro vp.

Like, holy shit, I never knew Wally Burr was so badass.  His name is burned into my brain because he was voice director for so much of my childhood, but I never knew this shit until today.

Quote
The dominant force in 'G.I. Joe' becomes director Wally Burr, a World War II hero who at just 19 rose to the rank of captain and commanded a tank battalion. He runs the recording room like a military operation, earning both the loyalty and respect of his voice actors. He also gains a reputation as one of the most exacting directors in animation thanks to his work on 'Joe' and 'Transformers.'

[Pat] Fraley: Director Wally Burr was among the youngest commissioned officer in World War II. He was in the tank brigade in Belgium. Once I understood that, I understood why he was so good for G.I. Joe. I also understood why he ran the sessions the way he did. He ran them like a tank. "OK here we go. Forward!" Then I started understanding his style, his care for authenticity in exertion sounds. When there was a fight, he would have you do all the exertion sounds. He made sure it sounded like you were getting gut-punched.

The word always was that Wally Burr was a slavedriver in the studio, but he turned out good stuff. The voices are a big reason these shows had such life after their runs.

That Friedman guy is an old-school SJW: everything is fucking political.

Did you know Jack Black is in it? This was before anyone gave a fuck about Jack Black. He's just some random soldier who goes all gung-ho and gets incinerated immediately. In fact, I think his "graphic" death is what escalates the plot.

The CG in that movie has AGED. Man, has it aged.

Talking about aging CGI...I watched Fellowship of the Ring the other day. Remember how great the CG looked in that and its subsequent movies? I never noticed it on my old TV, but it's rough to the point of distraction.
Title: Re: Random shit with no unified subject matter: the thread.
Post by: joe on Sep 29, 2016, 11:45:48 PM
It's been a while, but I seem to remember Fellowship being the least egregious of the three.

And it's positively modest compared to that unrepentant Hobbit trash.

I haven't watched Rings lately.  Certainly whenever I watch it on a high-end TV, I'll keep muh peepers open.  Now Hobbit... all of those Hobbiteseses....  the CGI in those was soooo distracting.  Even on a lower-end TV set and a single viewing.  Legolas jumping around like PS1-era Tekken character with a glitch.  The Donkey Kong barrels.  Disgusting.  So, yeah, those are examples from the second one but the point stands.  (Oh... oh, yeah, from the first one... the Rube Goldberg-style dragon provoking.  Yikes.)

I keep coming across Jumanji news.  I recall, back when I bitched about Karen Gillian's outfit, reading (from the director or someone like that) that there was a good reason why she was dressed like a skank.  Which, of course, I did a total eyeroll on.  And I had read rumors it was because she's supposed to be a video game avatar.  Which is still not an excuse, imo.  Either commit to dressing her like a skank and tell the critics to sod off or maybe not dress her like a skank if you can't take the blowback.  Because it's bullshit so you're gonna get blowback.  They could've made her a cool Marion Ravenwood/Evie O'Connell type.  It was completely their fucking choice.  So now this article (http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/trailers/772253-new-jumanji-triple-update) confirms they're avatars.  I want this movie to bomb.  I want it to bomb hard.  I want it to bomb so hard that if it actually did, I dare say I might get some form of physical gratification from it.  It has the Rock tho' and I don't recall the Rock having an outright bomb off the top of my head.  I mean, shit like Race to Witch Mountain didn't do the giant bank anyone wanted but it didn't flop either.

I don't want Dr. Strange to fail, but I fear its appeal is nebulous at best. Now watch me be proven wrong.

Rogue One is just... every time I see it I'm struck by the dearth of aliens. It's like whoever made it was afraid that people wouldn't take their super serious movie seriously if they included any makeup or rubber suits.

Re: Rogue One: Yeah, that makes me mad.  We could've had cool alien protags and bad guys.  They could've given Donnie Yen or whoever a Salacious Crumb-type sidekick.  Or a dude made out of a fuckin' goo.  Or a spider woman or something.  It's just, gosh, even the humans they use are very, very samey.  Broody expressions, dark outfits, and interchangeable with any other scifi thing.  Where's their Ruby Rhod?  Where's their Captain Jack Harkness?  Where's their Spock (referencing Nimoy) or their Worf?  Like, the very least they could've done is make some weird humans and they couldn't even do that much.  What about a humanoid robot or droid?  Something like the Predator?  "Well, uh, Donnie Yen's Asian and blind."  Ugh.  They couldn't even go with Star Trek aliens a.k.a. just-add-a-ridge/earring/etc.  They went full Firefly or sum shit.

It may be more along the lines of an old serial western, but it's still scifi that's talking about Galactic Empires with space planes carrying firepower of varying magnitudes, funky jive-talking aliens that came straight from the Red Lobster menu, semi-relatable robots who hold the keys to life and happiness, and ancient orders of monks tussling with opposing space monks with laser swords and zen energy fields and nameless hordes of laser-toting clones flying around on hoverbikes and banthas and shit.

What's worse: the hokey sci-fi explanations, or the hokey religious ones? Sometimes a binary star sunset is just a binary star sunset. It's not proof of invincible wee beasties or invisible intergalactic Brahman.

I can accept hokey religious ones more because it's sorta like "let's asspull this."  And religious explanations can still leave things open to interpretation and don't necessarily discount science.  Also, religious explanations tend to work better narratively because it keeps things short: "Why can the MC do it?  Maybe it's, like, God or something."  Hokey sci-fi ones are usually over-explainy and done along the lines of "how can we best kill someone's imagination by providing our canon immutable say-so."  But I see your point tho'.
