Title: Comedians (Feel free to post faves and recommend.)
Post by: B E C K on May 26, 2016, 05:38:39 AM
I need laffs so I've been searching for some through Netflix.  I've mainly been searching for women comedians.  While I like a funny man, I really hate an unfunny one and there's too many unfunny men that get specials and shit.  It just seems to be easier to weed through the women.  Unfunny men make me want to beat nuns.  I've seen a bunch of the funny men anyway: Carlin.  (Don't even know if his stuff's still there but they used to have an assload of it at one time.)  Louis CK.  Craig Ferguson.  So anway...

Ali Wong - Baby Cobra.  I didn't think I'd enjoy watching a slutty prego as much as I did her.  I'm wary of slutty women comics because their promiscuity becomes their punchline and it can get super old fast.  See Lisa Lampaneli, Amy Schumer, etc.  It's actually a similar deal with the prudie ones.  You can talk about this shit, but if that's all you've got for me, I'm going to lose my patience with you.  Ali Wong gets almost uncomfortably TMI.  She talks about her HPV.  Her miscarriage bike.  Stifling her shits.  "Pussy" and "snail trail" make it into the same sentence.  It works because it borders on educational, I think.   It's nice to hear a woman acknowledge these things.  It makes her more like a real person instead of other comics that are just trying to make an image.

Kitty Flanagan.  (I actually watched her special on Netflix: Hello Kitty Flanagan.)  She's like the older, peppier, Aussie version of me.  I'll be your friend, Kitty.

I also saw two other chicks who got a couple of laughs from me.  I don't remember their names.  I tried looking up who they were but the Netflix site is a bitch and a half.  rant// It's made for touchscreens.  It doesn't let me sign in anymore.  To clarify, Merla owns the account but I could sign in under any profile connected to the account.  Doing this only required the user name and password.  Now the sign-in screen insists on an email and password.  (Or sign in with FB.)  Only Merla's email has been connected to our Netflix.  I don't know if I can also connect myself to it, but I wasn't gonna do that anyway.  If I didn't already have her credentials, I'd be boned right now.  Especially since I'm the only profile left with a DVD queue and you can only add DVDs through the website as far as I can tell.  I was actually signing in to cancel that.  Which is great.  Because they're making my life harder anyway.  So fuck you, Netflix.  :)  When I signed out, Netflix then proceeded to autoplay an Orange is the New Black trailer.  Double fuck you, Netflix. //rant

I did see a bunch of unfunny chick comics, too, but I one-starred their asses and moved on.  Didn't get any of those bitches' names.  Heather... or Jena... or something.  Oh, Leslie Jones.  I tried watching her special.  It was painful in proportion to the million beads of sweat pouring all over her body.  I'm not even gonna click on anything starting with Chels- and ending with -andler.

Gallagher?

I don't know. I love Stand up, but get to watch it sorarely that I don't know of any names I can name right off the bat. I got a couple Stand up channels on my Pandora, but I can't listen to that at home because of Sat internet and it eats up the data (same reason I don't have netflix) and I can't at work because I'm...you know working. Sometimes On Wed night and one Sat a month when the boss is gone and I'm highest in the totem pole and get to sit in the big boss chair then I can listen to it, but most of the time I'm doing something else where I can't.

Shit, bitch, Pandora has stand up?  I'll have to look into that.  I wonder if Slacker also has stand up.  I've never checked.  Granted, I think I'd prefer to watch the person actually doing stand up.  But listening to some is nice option.

I like observational humor, but most of the people I see are just being filthy so I just avoid it.

Post by: B E C K on May 30, 2016, 03:33:21 AM
Observational stuff is fantastic.  I can laugh at some of the filthy shit but presentation is really everything.  If I turn on some stand up it's all "I'm such a slut and I'm a drunk, lol" in the entire set, it wears on me.  I was looking for more comedy on Netflix and I think I've actually gone through almost all of the women already because it was nothing but a sausage fest.  I found one woman I hadn't rated yet and knew I wouldn't like her when she started her special with home movie footage of her kid.  Her shtick was "I'm a mom, I'm Italian, lookit my boobs."  I was just gonna have her play in the background but she grated my nerves.  Then I put on some guy and part-way into his stand up, he persisted on being racist.  I think he thought he was being observational but it was on the level of "ho ho, those blacks like to talk during movies, amirite."  So I shut him off and put on House Hunters.  The other day I found a Craig Ferguson special I hadn't seen before.  A bunch of the material was reused from another special but I like Craig.

I like him, but I have a hell of a time understanding him. One night Billy Connolly was on his show, and the whole interview was downright unintelligible. But it was still funny, though...go figure.

I like to put on closed captioning on everything that has it available just because sometimes sounds will interrupt and I hate to rewind so I'll just read what was being said real quick.  It never occurred to me that I could be subconsciously cheating.   :D

Now that I think about it, the last time I saw Craig's late show, I had to scramble to find the remote for the captions and was annoyed that they were lagging.  So I don't understand him as well as I thought I actually did.   :stickdance:

I really like sketch comedy too. So usually if I'm looking on Youtube I find stuff like that if I need a laugh.

I usually less into sketches because I think it's easier to flop with sketches than if you're doing a stand up set.

I can find an old tape with Benny Hill and laugh my ass off for hours. I don't even have to speak British to love it.

Hill is the intentionally funny one whereas Hinn is a joke, period.

I was just watching a video from somewhere that had a preacher just walk up and start slapping the snot out of some chick in the audience. I thought the dude was speaking tongues at first, but it actually sounded Russian. I'm still looking in my Bible to see where I'm allowed to beat the crap out of people randomly.

Lack of context is a double edged sword in that there is an inversely-proportional relationship between making sense and entertainment value.

Burgess Meredith.

No.

Hannibal Buress?

I watched that Ali Wong thing on Netflix. She's super gross, but undeniably funny.

I couldn't understand that guy's singing to be honest.   Too bad there were no closed captions.

I've seen all of the Hannibal Buress.  Well, I take that back.  I tried to see it all.  There's one special on there where he goes overseas or something and it just stunk.  But he has other stuff that's funny so I watched that.

I started re-watching a bunch of Carlin's specials.  I don't think they're on Netflix anymore.  Which sucks.

After watching Bo Burnham, I went and read this interview.  http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/news/bo-burnham-talks-social-media-despair-why-trump-is-joke-proof-20160629  He said he's taking a break from stand-up and I just thought "uh oh."  Especially since I completely agree that a celebrity's value is only in the things they make.  An actress needs to make movies, a singer needs to make songs, etc.  It's like, dude, don't derail your own fame train by ending your 15 minutes too early, you know.

I tried watching Iliza Shlesinger "Confirmed Kills" on Netflix and couldn't get through seven minutes.  I realized later I had watched one of her previous specials "Freezing Hot" and was relatively entertained.  But meh.  So I changed it to Trevor Noah and was relatively entertained.

I tried watching one of her shows. Probably the one where she's basically nude on the poster. I couldn't stick with it.

She was fully clothed!

"War Paint?"  I kinda watched that one last night.  I say "kinda" because I was mainly listening to it.  I did laugh a few times.  Some of it does fall flat.  The bit about the homeless animals or whatever goes on too long.  Like she doesn't know how to cut shit short.  People complain about the goat noises but I like 'em.  "Freezing Hot" was more polished imo.  With "Confirmed Kills" she immediately goes into the joke about the party goblin.  Like, lady, you already did that shit in "Freezing Hot."  I don't think she's as funny as Ali Wong.  I'm glad the imdb star average reflects this.

You know, looking up stuff about Iliza Whatsherface, I came across a couple of postings at other places about women comics not being funny.  Not to get into another rant or nothing and I'm probably stating the fucking obvious here, but I think a lot of the chick comics skate by on looks.  As in a lot more--proportionately speaking--versus dude comics.  Because would dudes rather watch a funny chick comic or a hot one?  Chicks like this Iliza woman put out a special and advertise with a topless poster.  Whitney Cummings also has a topless poster for "Money Shot."  (Ho ho.)  Google "Amy Schumer Entertainment Weekly" and think about how many male comics pose like that.  How many people would put up with Sarah Silverman or Chelsea Handler if they didn't look they way they look?  Debra DiGiovanni's decent enough but mysteriously not as popular as any of them.

11,000+ views for this cougar bit.

348,882 views for this "guys put up with us for pussy" thing.

I mean, it's kinda bullshit for people to dog female comics while giving the good-looking ones a pass.  :stickdance:

I don't give any of them a pass, they're all garbage. No, I kid. But I don't find Amy Schumer amusing or attractive, she reminds me of Kermit's girlfriend both in personality and looks.

First episode of this season's South Park, Cartman goes on a spiel about girls not being funny. It was mean, but awesome.

Man, I was hoping CC would have a clip online.  Unless you meant that thing where Cartman's talking to the students in the gym and asks the girls to talk about their vaginas or whatever.  Oh, never mind, you were.  I just tried to post and it loaded your second post.  Man, the Comedy Central site loads like a tub of shit.  "Brought to you by Hormel."  Well, bring it to me faster.

Watching Margaret Cho's PsyCHO.  It works less like watching a comedienne and more like watching a really weird inspiration speaker.  But, like, the kind you're forced to watch because it's being held at your job and everyone in the department's required to watch.  You have to already enjoy Cho somewhat to like it.  And here she goes... on and on about her pussy.

Saw Kathleen Madigan's latest stand-up special on Netflix.  It's actually her second latest special in general.  I guess Netflix wasn't allowed to run it until there was an even newer one because this one's 2013 and her latest is from this year.  Anyway, I don't think it was as funny as the other special that's already on there but it was pretty darn close.

Watched "Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60."  I admit, the title worried me a bit.  Thought he might've popped something in his brain like Dennis Miller and might start ranting about SJWs or something fuckin' weird like that.  But, no.  Same ol' Dana but nicely topical.  Fuckin' funny.  I laughed.

Also watched Michael Che Matters:

(Sorry for the poor quality of the clip below, but I like this bit and couldn't find a better version.)

Watched Jen Kirkman's latest on Netflix.  Strikes me as another female comic skating on looks.  She got a few laughs outta me.  Like her bit on catcalling.  I didn't really feel like I was watching a comedienne.  It was more like "the quirky girl at work was telling her weird stories at the water cooler again" type material.  :-\

I watched an old Night at the Improv hosted by Shatner awhile back on Youtube. It featured a big dude named Christopher Collins. It wasn't hilarious, but it was amusing. But not so much as when I heard a voice he used...I looked him up, and as it turns out I was more familiar with an alias of his: Chris Latta (http://mentalfloss.com/article/48910/retrobituaries-chris-latta-voice-starscream-and-cobra-commander).

I struggle between still finding Louis CK kinda funny and recalling the sexual harassment accusations against him.  I did play the new special and found it good background fodder.  Nothing I paid any special attention to.  Same as I did with Amy Schumer's latest one.  I did like his Late Show appearance and his attitude concerning the Drumpf voter.  "He lied to him, he didn't lie to me."

Also saw a handful of really unfunny dudes on Netflix a couple of weeks back when I was looking for comedy to watch.  I don't remember who they were though.  I just played them a bit, got annoyed, and changed it to something else.

I never remember that until he reminds me in his stand up.  So he sorta exists in that dead space next to Mitt Romney in that regard.

They've been a pretty strong rumor.  For now, without any charges or anything substantial, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he's just probably too pervy behind-the-scenes for his own good.  On the other hand, if a Cosby-type scandal comes out about him years and years later, I won't be shocked either.

I'm sure the horror and disdain of the women they whip it out to adds to whatever shitty thrill those kind of guys get out of it.  Especially if they're famous and have some sort of powet or influence.  Like "I'm Steven Spielberg.  This dick directed ET."  You get the picture.  And apologies to Steven Spielberg for making him my fake example.  Unless he really did that at some point.  Then fuck you, Steven Spielberg.

I don't see any mention of me watching Dave Chapelle's latest material on Netflix even though I did that the week or so they were released.  Maybe I mentioned it in another topic.  Or I mentioned it and missed my own post.  They were decent.  4/5.

Tracy Morgan: Stayin' Alive - 4/5.
Hassan Minaj: Homecoming King. - 2/5.  He seems like a likable dude but sometimes he just borders on the pathetic and grasping for straws when it comes to some of his bits.  His set had this whole underlying narrative thing (similar to Ali Wong's Baby Cobra) and I wanted to see where it all was going so I stuck with it.  It doesn't have any rewatch value for me tho' and tho' Tracy's doesn't either, I laughed way more with him so I'm hitting Hassan with a 2.
Norm MacDonald: Hitler's Dog, Gossip & Trickery - 5/5.  I have a soft spot for Norm.  He has this really odd, flat sense of humor but it just gets me.  I'm still salty about when he was replaced with Colin Quinn on Weekend Update.  It's been twenty fuckin' years for crying out loud.

The local comedy club gives free admission to a group if one person in the group has a birthday that month, so my family a couple years ago would go to the comedy club for their birthdays. Don't know why we stopped doing that but after gramps died the family's kinda broken up a bit so whatever.

It takes a lot to get me to laugh, for some reason.
One guy I saw was named Haywood Banks. Guy who does the "Yea Toast!" song. His songs are clever but they don't make me laugh, but he does do humor in between songs during his shows, and even though he's "mostly" clean (at best it's a bunch of wink wink subtle humor), his stuff is funny.
list=PL9jRPbPkY55Bd0135RNiDeCCpP8lNyXnH
In the toast video he's drumming on a metal toaster with forks. That's the sound you hear.

Also saw Jimmy Pardo years ago. Thought he was somewhat funny.

Do youtube groups count? This one group created this series called Epic NPC Man which is damn funny.

Norm McDonald's Netflix special was great. Some of the most enjoyable standup I've seen in a long time.

I couldn't finish Tracy Morgan's. I remember loving him on 30 Rock but his standup just didn't work for me. I can't recall what exactly it was but know I hated something about it.

Yeah, Tracy's comedy is dirtier and--though I'm not familiar with how he was pre-accident--post-accident Tracy seems increasing bitter about life in general and has a narcissism that I could see really turning people off.  I interpreted this set as a kind of therapy for him.  This versus Norm who is smiley and just riffs on random things and doesn't make all the shit he says all about himself.

Watch Sarah Silverman: A Speck of Dust.  I'd say 4/5.  Saw room for improvement but it got some laughs from me.  I was gonna post the trailer for this but the trailer's pretty stupid.  A lot of haters in the comments, too.  And I don't usually use that word, "haters," but there's no other way to describe this.  Just like someone grabbed a fist full of their own diarrhea and slapped it under the comments section.

Sadly the only comedians I really follow at the Tenderloins, who are the stars of the TV show Impractical Jokers.

I laughed.

I tried to watch this, but after the first 15 mins I hadn't even smiled. Dana Carvey use to kill me. I still spout "Well isn't that special!" from time to time from his SNL days. But this did nothing for me. Kinda sad about it really.

I think he took a while to get going so there was that.  I almost shut it off partway through.

Norm MacDonald's OJ jokes still hold up today.
