I think the Aussie guy should've lived. With Idris Elba sacrificing himself alone. And the way those 5 pilots died so quickly was kinda disappoint. Oh yeah, and we needed more fights in the day light. Would've been nice. But otherwise, I liked this movie. Post whatever. I should've brought back the spoiler tag but I'm lazy.

I like this one as well, but it had it's problems. My main problem was actually between Mako and the SOA guy. (who made so little impact that I can't even remember his characters name.) One there wasn't much character development for these two and what was there wasn't good. I heard that this script was really trimmed down and most of what was lost was character stuff. Really the whole script needed one more good pass.
I really think Mako should have already been the new pilot and they were bringing the SOA guy because of his experience. I also didn't like how Mako wasn't much of a badass at the start. She was all looking out her peep hole at him...and looking away when he stared at her...and doing school girl shit. I half expected her to giggle into her hand at any moment. That should have all been cut out. A much better story would have been her being a very strong good pilot that had to prove herself to vet that didn't think she had what it takes and then won his respect and you could have weaved the love story into that.
Which that love story fell pretty flat too. The only reason I knew they'd end up together is because I really saw "Drifting" as an allegory for sex. (which is really strange when everyone else doing it in the movie was a close relation.) But once you've been that much in someone's head you either have to love them or hate them. But out of the two I liked Mako better. She had a good back story and I like this actress. I think she could have been written a little better, but I still like her. The SOA guy kinda fell short...never seen SOA so I don't know if this is the actors fault or the director. He was very one dimensional though…but he got more character plot then all the other pilots except the Aussies though. Those other pilots might as well have been wearing Red Shirts. Which sucks because I like the look of both of those mechs and wanted to see what they could do...get their ass beat apparently is what they can do.

And it also took me a LOTTTT of time to remember what the main guy's name is. Raleigh Beckett. I didn't even have to look it up but it just took me a while. Which is really sad since part of my damn name is in there and it still couldn't stick in my head.

I was just thinking the same thing. Nobody needed the fetishism of Mako. Her freaking out inside the jaeger, not being able to fight her own fights, and just being all shy around daddy and her co-pilot. I wanted more badass shit like where she pulled out that sword. That shit was dope.
Imo, there were just too many narratives here:
Raleigh Beckett - ranger, lost his brother, gets dragged back in, needs a new partner.
Mako Mori - newb, trying to prove herself to everyone including daddy
Stacker Pendecost - his nose drips blood because of death, his funds are cut, has a last minute plan he must execute, daughter issues
This doesn't even take into account the angry arrogant young Aussie, the two bumbling scientists, and whatever was going on with pimp Perlman. Actually, all of it was interesting but it was too much in a single feature film. Here's what I would've done, at least for the first part of the film:
I would've kept the beginning the same. Then after the title card, have almost the same scene we had earlier with Stacker talking to the world leaders or whoever they were. Except it takes place in Hong Kong. Raleigh's already there with Mako as his partner. We have some sort of dialogue about how Raleigh had left to build the wall but the wall was ineffective. Because there apparently no other way to stop the kaiju, Raleigh knew he had to overcome the trauma of his brother's death and return to the project. So yeah, cut out all of that shit where we travel to Hong Kong and see Raleigh working in construction. Like, HUH? What a waste of time. That part should've been cut and been a web extra or something.
The Heckle and Jeckle scientists were a bit of a time-eater, too. The Torchwood guy's part should've been scaled back. He could've still been there somewhere, but not in the foreground as often as he was. The whole Mako-Stacker was given way more time than it needed. Again, these are interesting events and would've been great web extras or for a graphic novel. But all of this stuff took away from the kaiju and the battles we should've gotten. I wanted to see those other jaegers rock out and they just went splutzzzzz.
The movie needed to be leaner about the story it wanted to tell so that every element had time to play out. And it was like they just crammed in and left remnants of things inside of it. Like when a scene gets cut but part of it is still present in the movie so only the people who wrote the script in the first place even know what it's doing there. But to the audience, it's kinda wtf. So we were still left with a good movie, but it just wasn't, um, tidy I guess.

See I would have kept some of the wall stuff. It shows that he hasn't got into a mech since his bother died and it sets up the come back style story...but there was too much of that shit. A lot of that could have been edited out. All you needed to see was getting him getting to the job...working on the wall...seeing the Aussie wall fail and then Pentecost shows up to get him. 5-10 mins top. It went on far longer then it needed to in order to impart that information to the viewers. It's not like the wall played a major part from here on out so you don't need to waste much time here.

Yep...I think Beckett should have been the one that freaked out actually and that Mako used her own memories to talk him down instead. It would have worked more for his story of getting back in the saddle again and overcoming the fear that kept him from it. Then you could have use that bound they made there to spring board the love story.
And yeah that sword bit was fucking awesome. That was one my favorite parts when they cut off the wing then pulled the highlander and fell to the ground. Awesome.

I actually think the Hermann guy should have been written out completely and combined with Newt. I'd seen Newt's actor before in "It's Always Sunny" and he did pretty good here...if not a little manic sometimes. But they needed to cut the fat of the other scientist and then get him and Hannibal to team up faster because that was magic there. Get Ron Pearlman into more of this movie and keep him around longer. Because that worked.
And I thought Pentecost was dying because he was one of the few people that piloted a Jaeger solo. It didn't make any sense when they said it was radiation that was killing him. Why would getting back into a Jaeger kill him? The Eureka Striker wasn't even nuclear. (Which they established in the HK fight). What would make sense is if one more drift would cause so much brain damage he would die. I also thought the solo pilot thing was set up so that he could eject the Aussie guy and save him....but nope. No pay off there either.
Still liked this movie...but this script needed to be a little more polished before it went in front of a camera.

I didn't even think about the radiation stuff, I just assumed his brain wouldn't be able to survive after another drift. I don't know if I made that assumption from something said in the movie or for another reason. You're right though. The whole solo pilot thing would've been great to revisit at the end there. And good thinking about having Raleigh being the one to have a freak out. That makes much more sense for Raleigh's story than Mako's.
I also thought about combining the scientists but I don't think their specialties and personalities would have gelled so much in a single person. I would've rather had Torchwood dude as background fodder with a couple of lines and then the rest of the scientist time goes to the other guy.

The thing with Hermann's specialty is that it wasn't needed in the movie. Sure he predicted double and triple events, but it wasn't like they prepared for those. They didn't believe him till the other guy saw them on the radar or whatever. Then he is like "Double event!!" the he is all like "Ah ha...I told ya." He didn't have any impact other then being a foil for Newt, which is a role that Pentecost could have filled. That's kinda why I thought they could get rid of him...and anything he did that didn't have to do with the Math then someone else could have done.
And I posted this one Facebook, but it looks like WB green lit a sequel. I find that odd since the movie still hasn't made it's money back yet. It is close though and maybe the drop off hasn't been bad and they confident it'll make it's money in the theater and then that it'll make a lot of money off rentals, streaming, and DVD sales.

I saw that too. I really hope it makes it's money back so they don't pull the plug on the sequel at some point before it starts production. They still have China and Japan to go...which I think could be big markets for this flick.

I think this flick made more then Hellboy did...Might be Del Toro's best opening ever. Only problem was the budget was so high that fact is getting lost. If they could have got this down to 150 mill....those same people would be singing his praises right now.

How awesome would this have been had it been set in Tokyo instead of Hong Kong? I wonder if the film maker made a deal with China like Iron Man 3 did and that was the reason for the change.
Would have loved to seen Japan's Jaeger.
I do like the idea that Mako was already a vet pilot though or at least was a pilot of some kind before Beckett showed up.
And I think being able to learn a different language just by drifting with someone that knew it would be a bigger deal...imagine being fluent in like 10 different languages without having to spend decades mastering them. That'd be awesome.
But those are the things I would have like from that script...the rest..ehhhh...I'd actually like to read the real thing instead of taking someone else word at it though.

I think this person put way more thought into tearing this movie apart, then the people that made it did in building it up.
But I do agree on a few points:
I did like Clifton Collins, Jr in this flick...his role was far too small.
I am also happy Tom Cruise didn't get that roll. That would have added "star" powet...but not the kinda star powet I would have wanted. Having Ron Pearlman be you biggest star was alright we me.
And oddly enough I can see where they are coming from with the whole womb thing. I think it might be a metaphor...but again I think this writer is digging too deep looking for something to get upset about. Let's not forget that birth canal was pushing forth giant monster that had killed millions of people.

So the movie pulled down 9 mill in China on it's opening weekend there. That's the best opening for a WB movie in China ever...even better then the Harry Potter flicks. Things are looking up for the movie as China and Japan were seen as big markets for this movie and China has paid off...still has yet to open in Japan.

I don't think it's so much "reparations" as much as it is trying to squeeze out as many dimes from their IP as possible. Most of the iconic villains are women: Maleficent, Cruella, Ursula the sea witch, the evil queen from Snow White, the wicked stepmother. Those bitches have endured. But Disney doesn't seem to want to accept the crooked appeal of villains. Even something like Wreck It Ralph, they went out of their way to tell us that villains were actually good all along. Not to mention Disney still suffers from backwards-itis. Calling it now: Cruella's evil because of a man. ::)

(6) If you need a new character, don't bring in yet another white guy. Why can't he be a Chinese guy or from some other country or ethnicity not as represented. It was weird enough that the majority of the pilots/operators/whatever were white people. (7) If you insist on bringing in another white guy, don't bring in fricken Eastwood for Christ's sake. Can we at least get Matt Bomer or Matt Mullins or someone like that? (8) Why can't the new character be a woman? (9) I'd rather the movie be about Idris and the other guy who died getting out of the other dimension. Like, they didn't die after all or something freaky like that. I'd really just prefer an asspull in comparison to what's on the table right now.

No real news but confirmation that Charlie Hunman will not be in the sequel. He said so at Comic Con, I think, but I'm too lazy to find the source. So peeps hoping for more Raleigh/Mako are boned.

Idris + Rinko + Jax from Sons of Anarchy was why I saw the first one. John + Scott Eastwood who made it on his talent and not his name I'm sure + child-like nobody white girl + yet another white guy for diversity = not interested. Not even for the Chinese girl. They could've chosen a cuter Chinese girl and made her the female lead but whatevs. And all of those people they casted are skewing youngish. Where are the older characters?
