Pretty scared at the moment.....
A few days ago I found out I had been accused of committing a felony by someone I knew a while back. They basically accused me of doing something to someone else. Now, the police seem to be in no hurry to drag me off to jail (seems they don't have enough evidence at the moment, or something), but I have this feeling I'll have to sleep at least one night in a jail cell, have myself bailed out, and go to court.
My family have defended me all the way, a few of them going down to the station to tell the cops about my good merits. They've hooked me up with a family friend who's an attourney who's been defending clients for over 30 years.
However, I still fear finding myself going to prison for a while. This is a very frightening though.. not only will I be surrounded by horny tattooed guys 10 times stronger than my weak pale ass, who will either rape or kill me, but if I survive, I doubt I'll graduate college let alone get a job or a place to live.. no one wants to be near ex-convicts.
So.. I'm depressed and suicidal right now.

The police don't want to press charges but they have no choice. I've heard that there's a good chance that I'll be going to court... and that the maximum penality is 7-15 years in prison.
However, there IS hope... for a price.
My family attorney has agreed to defend me. He's giving me a discount, I'll only have to pay between $5000 and $20000.. probably around $12000. He thinks he can get this dismissed before we go to court in which case I'll only pay $6000 or so... if it goes to court it might be around $15000.
Now, this is a lot of money but nothing when compared to other attorneys that charge 20k-50k. And this guy's been doing cases for 30-40 years, so he's pretty good.
I don't like the prospet of dying/being beaten up/raped in a small cell.

Even if you were to end up going to prison, which I don't really think will be happening innocent or otherwise, you probably wouldn't even serve more than a couple of years or so with good behaviour, parole, and all of that. There's a lot of prisoners who don't come close to serving out their full sentences. And as for finding work if it does come to the worst, it may be hard to find work but not impossible. I have a relative who served time for such a crime and he currently has gainful employment.

Why don't you get one of those lawyers you only have to pay them if they win your case?
I don't think those lawyers do these kinds of cases, most of them do stuff like workers comp settlements, injuries, not criminal law.

If you can learn of the precise details around the accusation, such as a date of when this alleged sexual contact occured, then you can try and find some evidence to discredit the accusation. The lawyer will probably ask the same thing and such forth, and will probably want testimony from the teenage girl.

Agreed. A dude on Howard Stern met this chick in a bar, and they hooked up. She gave him a key to her hotel nearby, and of course he went there. They had a great, sweaty time... but then after, she freaked out. OMG!!! OMG!!! I COULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS!!!
He of course is worried, and asks what is wrong, she's flying out to get married the next day, and she was in the bar after her less than wild bachelorette party, and she was a virgin no less. Now she was deflowered, and her super christian husband would find out. She ran out, leaving him in the room, game over? No.
About a week later he was driving on the highway, and was pulled over by a cop. He wasn't speeding, so he thought it was a taillight. The cops pulled out their guns, and arrested him hard. He was charged with rape, the chick said that he drugged and raped her in the hotel room, and then stole her wallet. The guy is freaked, he could be put away for 35 years maximum sentence. His parents mortgaged their house and sold a car to get him lawyer money and bail.
What happened? The chick ended up calling him multiple times, apologizing, saying that her new husband freaked out, she made up the story, and she was sorry he had to go to jail over it.
The lucky bastard was smart enough to tape the conversation, and she later confessed to his lawyer.

Based on mere accusation, they can do this. In fact, based on your description of the situation, it sounds like a situation that happened to someone within my circle of friends earlier this year. It's nasty crap that can be pulled on anybody at any time.
Of course, I know another situation where a guy was pissing behind a tree in the woods during a party, and a 14-year old neighbor girl who dropped by for the party went around to chell him out. As a result, he went to jail for exposure with amorous intent, or something equally ridiculous. Problem was, someone else saw him, too. Nobody respects privacy anymore....
However, without material proof (signs of violation, the girl's testimony, or a baby), I doubt they can do much more than hold you pending trial, which is bad enough. Whatever costs you incur, you may want to go ahead and tell your lawyer to sue the fuck out of Mommy Dearest for her loose lips...mental distress, lost wages, compromised reputation, your butt-raping in the holding cell, etc. Also (bearing in mind that I don't know much about how the courts in your area work), you might try to petition the court for relief in lawyer fees and court costs, so if they dismiss the case, then Mommy Dearest has to pay it all herself. If that happens, I hope your council generally bills his hours by 15-20 minute increments. She'll be ass-raped by the legal system if that's the case.
Failing that, withdraw every dime you have in the bank and put out a hit on her.

While I appreciate your ever-so-loving comments concerning people such as myself, even the average, "open-minded", Kerry-supporting heathen doesn't approve of statutory rape, so that's a total non-issue. Though before initiating any sort of violence I would be inclined to find out the whole situation behind it, such as if my daughter lied about her age and if it was indeed consentual. If this is the case, I can't say that I would not be dissapointed, but I would definitely urge my daughter and the guy in question not to in a hopefully reasonable and intelligent manner.

Good reason for parents or other close adults to keep communication lines open.
