The sad thing is, he hasn't the proverbial snowball's chance, but Herman Cain is great. I really like his tax plan, and I believe he's a quick study on anything else he's not already worked on. He's one of the few actual human beings with half-a-brain in politics right now.
Reminds me of a joke: what do you call a politician with half-a-brain? Gifted.
While people think he's nuts, Ron Paul actually makes a whole lot of sense. The only problem is that he's lobbying for a return to the antebellum American government. For better or worse we're too far gone for a return to the republic this thing was founded on. I feel he has more of the turn of the 19th century Democratic Republican stance than Libertarian, which is why he fits in no convenient mold. I love the man...despite being completely unelectable, we'd all be better off if we'd actually heed what he has to say.
Here's my opinion of the field in brief:
Rick Perry's a compassionate conservative Bushling.
Mitt Romney's a put-on Northeastern RINO.
Michele Bachmann's shrill and successfully demonized but with questionable merit.
Herman Cain's a successful mathmatician, Navy man, CEO, and Oreo.
Ron Paul is the 21st century's analog of Cassandra.
Newt Gingrich's the smartest has-been in the room.
Rick Santorum's an unremarkable Republican blank slate.
Jon Huntsman's "the only Mormon to run in the IA straw poll, and he came in second amongst Mormons" (thanks, Jon Stewart).
Gary Johnson's like a failing student who sneaks in and gets in the picture with honor roll students in the class annual.
Jimmy McMillan's rent is too damn high...much like himself.
Still, any one of these is preferable to me over the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In addition to overseeing TARP, she's a pay their fair sharer who believes anyone who is rich owes the rest of the world for letting them do it. So if you believe in income redistribution then she's your candidate.

I believe that everyone should pay the same percentage in taxes, and if a corporation is considered on the same level as an individual then they fit this as well. I know this will screw people on both ends of the spectrum but I really do feel it should be evened out. It doesn't have to be immediate, but I feel it's where it should go.
I liked the words she said from a thirty second video, but I might change my mind when I hear more. All politicians seem to have a knack for sounding great for awhile and then completely smacking you in the face with something you don't agree with at all.

Corporations don't actually pay taxes...the people who buy the goods and services from them do. So who actually bears the cost? That being said, the cost of doing business is far too high and becoming exclusive, add we have one of the highest corporate tax structures in the developed world. The problem is the proliferation of loopholes that enable the biggest companies to weasel out of paying "their fair share". And nobody on either side of the aisle really wants to touch the problem.
This is why Herman Cain has had a surge in popularity recently. His 9-9-9 plan, whether it would work or ever get a chance to, is simple, reasonable, and absolute...not to mention fair. And I think people of all stripes appreciate that.

I'm hoping this surge in attention for Cain gives him some momentum. Out of the Republican candidates, him and Paul are the ones I like the most.
And while I don't think Ron Paul would ever be elected president, someone should put him in some high cabinet post. He's a great idea man.

Ron Paul is right about pretty much everything, and neo-cons hate him because he calls them out on their faux free market crap and "nation-building" waging of war. We paleo-cons love him for it, but the common-sense conservative is not in vogue with the GOP...for now.

To sum it up, taking money from corporations indirectly takes money from the individuals comprising the entity. Either consumers of the goods and/or services provided pay into that difference, workers get reduced wages or benefits, or shareholders get less return on their investment. Who deserves to lose out because certain people think corporations should pay "their fair share"?
There's a lot of talk about people resenting that corporations are essentially a legal person who doesn't pay the proper amount of tax, but the fact that this corporate body is built by those three groups means that the burden will fall on them. Some may blame the executives and their huge salaries, their huge stock options, and those golden parachutes people hate but are there as a mechanism to get rid of bad execs. But that's an internal decision that has no bearing on anyone else, particularly the government.
That's just basic economics. I'm not saying corporations shouldn't pay: they benefit from public resources and should by right pay...it's the right thing to do. But trying to take them to the cleaners because they're convenient scapegoats or for the valid reason that loopholes create an inequitable system in relation to other taxpayers is the wrong thing to do. Fixing the system rather than singling out one facet of it is what's called for here.

While Palin's leaving the Alaska governor's office leaves an opportunistic bad taste in my mouth, I understand her reasons for having done so. But Christie knows that he must have a successful run as governor for at least one full term before he attempts a national career in politics.
Granted, he's not my ideal candidate...he tends to be somewhat moderate on all but fiscal matters, and he was pretty hung up on "bipartisanship" in his recent Reagan library speech. But I love the fact that he's no-BS & straight forward.

John McCain had a similar, reasonable view of the issue but altered it when it came time to run for president which really bothered me. But once he chose his running mate, his stance on issues became moot anyway.

Abortion is a presidential issue if for no other reason than it informs voters as to what kind of SCOTUS appointees that candidate would make. There's also the bully pulpit aspect of the presidency...giving whatever cause that person wants to advance the most powerful voice inn the world.

If it were between Romney and Obama, I'd stay at home and let the Democrats win. There's no choice when you have so little difference in the parties. I don't trust him any further than I could throw him...at least I know what Obama wants to do. Romney has consistently misrepresented himself for fifteen years.
And that doesn't even touch the Mormon issue. Plus, I think it's more important for voters to have a say in who the nominee is rather than the media and blue blood Republicans.
Cain would be the best option right now, as I feel he's quite electable, likeable, and can appeal to independents and a good many Democrats. As for Republican racists not voting for him, that assumes there are enough to matter, which there is not.

The sexual harassment thing with Cain is fishy from the start. All of them are related to workplace harassment while he was head of the National Restaurant Association...but most if not all these incidents were alleged to have occurred in Chicago, and he never worked there during that time. And some of these accusers have some heavy hitting political connections that cast the shadow of doubt.
In any case, I take that statement to mean that Cain's lawyer is putting people on notice that they're probably going to pursue legal action if they continue to make unsubstantiated claims. And I agree with that...they should either file suit or STFU.

I'm talking in general. I believe there's five of them, and they're all from Chicago. Based on how Obama won his senatorial race after people dug up and released marital issues of both his primary and general opponents, this raises suspicion even without Cain never having worked there while in the NRA.
Plus, you're assuming the allegations are not total bullshit to start with. Anyone can hire a lawyer to hold a press conference to announce someone committed sexual harassment, but not enough to go to a judge for. That's what's going on here. And I don't believe anyone should make public accusations anonymously. If true, it's little more than revenge, not justice. If false, it's slander.
As for Speaker Legosi, the only thing I wish people would quit calling her is "Speaker". Well, that, and "Representative".

In these situations I never go by whether or not the accusation may be true or not and look to how they handle it. I don't think Cain's handling this as well as he could in my opinion. Also, semi-related, he could stand to be less brusque. I see people who know nothing about him just see him say a few lines on tv and get immediately turned off.

They were under a nondisclosure agreement. They didn't make the accusations. Cain's own republican rivals dug up this mess. Then when it got brought up the media dug into it and pushed more and Cain wavered on the issue which caused it to get worse and worse, and he talked so much about it, he broke the agreement which forced some of these women out to try and set the record straight. They were not anonymous, they were paid to keep their mouths shut. Paid hundreds of thousands of dollars. You don't think THAT is suspicious? But because it happened in Chicago you have to point it toward Obama. Obama had nothing to do with this. It is all about Cain, and the way he subjugates women, and the way the republicans discredit them by insulting...not their claim but the women themselves. The republicans defense is to ATTACK. Lash out and try to confuse people but not talk about the REAL issues. It's not going to work this time.

The fact that they deign to speak for anything remotely close to 99% of the nation is enough to discount the entire concept. The arrogance is staggering, and the constant reference to "the 99% of the American people" sounds like a bad wrestling promo. But anyway.
1. Elimination of the Corporate State.
For a group concerned with the first amendment from the get-go, they sure do like deciding whose voices should and should not count. If you run, represent, or own shares in a corporation, shut up whilst we redistribute your monies.
2. Overturning the “Citizens United” Case.
See #1. It's also humorous, as it's possibly the only time I've seen leftists decry the "anti-democratic" judiciary. Republicans use super-PACs, Democrats use unions...where's the beef? If you want to see real campaign negativity, look at the Revolution of 1800. If you want to see why it shouldn't be undone, see the first amendment once again.
Plus I'd counter that it was McCain-Feingold that should have been repealed, but that's a knock-down drag-out for another time.
3. Elimination of All Private Benefits to Public Servants.
So, let's say I win a congressional seat and was appointed to the banking and finance committee. Where would I keep my money? I could lose my life insurance policies and my highly hypothetical children could have unfair employment restrictions placed on them (see 14th amendment, equal protection clause). All that sounds far-fetched, but think for a moment...what doesn't the government regulate? It'd be easier if they'd just stop regulating everything. But we can't have that, can we?
4. Term Limits.
I have no beef with this at all. Now someone find a feather and try knocking everybody down with it.
5. A Fair Tax Code.
I'm tired of hearing "fair share". Who decides "fair share"? Who decides the "fair share" is fair? The "fair share" might be fairly unfair. But it's fair to the fair people who decide how fair or unfair the "fair share" might fairly be. Notice that this entire paragraph concerns corporate tax, which is already quite high...and they wonder why companies relocate and carry jobs elsewhere? BTW, loopholes will naturally close when the IRS is dismantled and a flat tax is instituted across the board.
6. Health Care for All.
The government can't pay for or even make Medicare work properly for just old people. Not only is current iteration of federal health-care causing havoc with health-care providers (don't get me started on the clustermuck Obamacare is already beginning to cause), one would be foolish to neglect the enormous potential for the abrogation of personal freedom (see the recent contraception issue for a trite example). Like it or lump it: health care is NOT a human right, and it's outside the scope of the Constitution and therefore the federal government.
7. Protection of the Planet.
Great, environmentalist whackos blaming corporations for killing Gaia again. This reads like an excerpt from Gore's movie coupled with doomsday rhetoric. Giving any government agency new, more broad powers is never a good idea, particularly when the one in question sucks so badly using the ones currently at its disposal. Current scientific data is too limited to properly inform responsible law, though that's never stopped Congress before.
8. Debt Reduction.
The only way to reduce government debt is to stop (not reduce) government spending. You could tax everyone 100% and not pay this sucker off for decades. Besides, universal healthcare by itself would be the undoing of this pursuit. Which do they want? It's either/or, not both. Oh, and it's yet another thing blamed on corporations.
9. Jobs for All Americans.
Government never made a job in its entire history because whatever it has to pay workers is first taken from them. Only business produces jobs, and we're already effectively running them out of the country (see previous answers). Besides, we already have jobs training programs in place...they're called "high schools". But they've been dumbed down so severely that a high school diploma's worth is only that its required to get into college. And beyond that are the numerous programs (many private, many state-level) that get people college-level job training. But where would the federal gov't get the money to fund this? Corporations again?
10. Student Loan Debt Refinancing.
If high schools weren't so decrepit the need for an expensive college education would be reduced. But no one was forced to go to college...I've still got $1500 left on my first foray's loan debt, but that sucker is getting paid with no help from anyone else. I also disagree with the notion that education is the answer...hard work and guts is the answer.
11. Ending Perpetual War for Profit.
Tell me where the profit is? All I see is cost. It's a misnomer. However, I agree with closing WWII era bases overseas when sea-bases are far more economical and flexible, as most countries we'd be concerned with are 120 miles from some sort of coast. Reducing nuclear armament isn't so critical as modernizing it is...the numbers aren't the problem as much as the maintenance of fifty year-old installations and unnecessary submarine second-strike capability dating from the days of MAD.
Where congressional approval is concerned, they have the powet to declare war and manage expenditures, and that's it. The president is, for better or worse, the commander-in-chief. By "pre-text" I presume they mean Iraq, where every intelligence agency in the world was telling us they had and intended to use WMDs until our armed forces went in and found a few but nothing what they were told? Whose fault was it really, particularly when you had "Congressional approval" for that conflict? Blame Bush all you want, but that was a botch for which everyone must share blame...except for those few of us who didn't care what they might have as long as they didn't use them and opposed Iran (Ron Paul, me, and I'm sure a few others).
12. Emergency Reform of Public Education.
Rewrite that first sentence, "the public government education system in the United States is a resounding failure," and you both have it right and a good start to fixing it. How about we just worry about teaching children how to write, read, and solve general math problems, like we should have been doing the whole time?
13. End Outsourcing and Currency Manipulation.
Another matter of throwing other people's money at the problem rather than addressing the problem, which is directly tied to the value of the dollar, which is directly tied to how much of our tender is borrowed against other currencies. This is what prevents us from starving the Chinese of market muscle and artificial value (re: lending them ours). After all, "the borrower is slave to the lender," per Proverbs 22:7. Also see the inflation tax, as decried by your friend and mine, Representative Ron Paul. Also see my comments on corporate scapegoating throughout this tome.
14. Banking and Securities Reform.
Agreed on Glass-Steagall; disagreed on Volcker, as it is a lesser version of the former. Restore the uptick rule and speculation falls back to reality without further need for new regulation.
15. Foreclosure Moratorium, Mortgage Refinancing and Principle Write Downs.
Government needs to stop any involvement in the mortage loan industry, as it is the cause of much of it by essentially forcing banks to make risky loans through things like the Community Reinvestment Act. Relaxing regulations made it profitable to offer such subprime loans by selling them off to other investors, so banks naturally sought ways to literally hedge their bets. And, as bad as it sounds, the holders of those crappy mortgages must lose their homes until they can afford one...known as "the old fashioned way". Once things get back on the upward track, there'll be plenty of buyers for those foreclosed homes, and the folks who borrowed them (as opposed to owning...no mortgage holder actually owns anything but a debt) will be in a better position to buy later. The national gov't can't go around buying everyone a house.
16. Review and Reform of the Federal Reserve Banking System.
Hah, "bipartisan"...there's no such thing. And there are more than enough commissions and committees in Congress already. The Fed is a bank already; we don't need another central bank to get us into trouble. And another small but important correction: the bubble and bursting thereof is directly attributable to mismanagement of government-subsidized enterprises, poorly-conceived banking instruments and irresponsible laws forcing them to use those instruments.
17. Ending the Electoral College and Enactment of Uniform Federal Election Rules in All of the States.
Nothing wrong with the electoral college. We have more than enough election laws now. And Congress making laws about campaign finance reform was already covered. Popular vote is irrelevant short of the passing of an amendment changing that fact. Gore lost; grow up and get over it.
18. Ending the War in Afghanistan and Care of Veterans.
I agree with the first part with one condition: that Afghanistan be carpet bombed into oblivion immediately after withdrawal. Make all future wars involve this procedure prior to any ground troops being mobilized. Remember, the best means of preventing veteran suicides is to quit creating veterans. I furthermore propose that whatever is left of the nation and its resources be confiscated to pay for the war effort and returning veterans along with their relevant expenses. Since there is no real profit made in these so-called Wars for Profit, they might as well accomplish something.
19. No Censorship of the Internet.
This one's a little late to the game; SOPA/PIPA are dead; we need to worry more about ACTA.
20. Reinstitution of Civil Rights Including the Repeal of the NDAA.
Another area of agreement...I support the rollback of PATRIOT and related policies. But I submit replacing them with intelligence gathering on foreign nationals in and out of the country with a refocused NSA/CIA.
21. Curtailing the Private Prison Industrial Complex.
Heh. "The so-called “War on Drugs” is a war on young people, minorities and the poor who cannot acquire adequate legal representation...." Maybe if they'd quit buying dope they could afford lawyers? I'm not for legalization and the crop of problems that would cause, but shunting them into rehab may not be any better, as it turns it into essentially another form of incarceration. Then there'll need to be more built, which will cause more cost issues. All of a sudden you have the same problem again.

I've often said sex is cheap entertainment for scumbags, and keeping it that way is only part of what this is about. The continual turning of the sexual revolution from the sixties becomes a problem with Catholicism, as well as for biblical Christianity and any other religion when the state is essentially demanding that the church deny its tenets and rubber stamp sinful behavior. So much for separation, huh? That's the first purpose of this "debate"...establish government authority over health care, regardless of what stands in its way. Of course, everything can be connected to people's nebulous "well-being"...so where does that authority end?
And, given that this is prime political season, that gets us to that second purpose. It is in the Democrats best interest to polarize women against any Republican candidate. That's how they roll: Repugnicans are out to beat old people out of SSI, middle class out of taxes and mortgages in favor of the 1%™, women out of their vaginas, kids out of their school lunches, hispanics out of the country, and, last but not least, just simply beat on black people. And Republicans are such political amateurs that they don't know how to counter effectively...the most effective means being to straight up say, "you guys are idiots, and here's why," and then doing so.
But I don't blame Democrats for that; it's just good politics. The fact that the public should be smart enough to recognize this but is gullible enough to fall for it every time is what gripes the hell out of me. And the fact that you, yourself, can't abide people having other opinions, such as Catholicism opposing contraception (which I personally have no problem with) is symbolic of the problem this country has at large. That problem being: the uncontrolled impetus to want government to attend to everything in a supposed "fair" manner that intrudes on basic constitutional rights in favor of manufactured "rights" that have been relatively recently coined, such as the "right" to free health care.
Finally, with regard to your Catholic protesters, I guarantee that they were far less difficult to deal with than the Occupy douche bags all last year. Unfortunately, with the balkanization of the former melting pot becoming ever more pronounced, I see it becoming necessary in the very near future to fight fire with fire.
