Title: Windows 8: Meh.

Ugh... they aren't really gonna stick something optimized for a phone or a tablet on a desktop, are they?  This thing sounds like it's really gonna be dependent on me being connected to the internet in order for those "live tile" thingies to work their mojo or whatever and homey don't play that.  I can just picture each one loading at Bitey warp speed.

First "dramatic change" of the operating system in 16 years?  So that means they're up to copying Mac OS 7 right about now.  Cool.   Didn't Windows 7 just come out last year?

Somewhat related... I think I have successfully convinced my mother to buy a Mac after years of frustration with her multiple PCs.   Though, whether or not she boots into windows with it remains to be seen.

I don't recall when.  Haven't used 7, heard it was hideous with itty-bitty-titty font.

I actually heard it was decent, you know, for a PC and all... but I've not tried it myself outside of on my mother's laptop once for about 30 minutes when she bought it.  But it seemed just like XP or whatever we use at work for me to notice a difference.

I'm not knocking your mom or anything, spooie, but it's been my experience that people who have trouble with computers will always have trouble with computers, regardless of the platform/operating system.

Again, I don't know your mother and I'm not implying anything untoward about her, this is just something I have found to be mostly true over the years.

I apologize if I have offended you. I'm sure your mother is a saint.

I, on the other hand, have said all kinds of terrible things about your Mother and meant every word of it.

All is well.   *I* have used her PCs and they do indeed suck monkey butt.    It takes 5 minutes to get from the computer start up to opening a browser.  Then it takes another 2 minutes to get it to go to a website.    Programs run slow, or don't run all the apps at all.  People tell me that she has too much stuff on there, and that she needs to delete THIS or THAT, and she needs to stop going to random websites and downloading crap.  But the thing is, she doesn't do any of that, and she doesn't go anywhere other than Facebook and to her email.   If one can't even do that on a computer, then what the hell is the point of having one to begin with?

Of course, you're right Rama... my mother HAS done a bunch of Terrible things.  She's already owned four PCs!  One that was given to her by a co-worker, and three she bought herself.  I don't know what could possibly be worse than that. :)

Windows 7 works fine, at least in the limited capacity in which I have used it. It was preinstalled on my work computer. I may be buying a new computer soon, so I'll find out more. I've heard nothing but good about it.

Windows 8, however, looks like the Windows Phone 7, which was made to be simple yet powerful...for cell phones. While WP7 is a great system, I don't want simple for my desktop...I rather enjoy my relentlessly convoluted PC. They're going for a single, full-featured OS that successfully scales down from PC to tablets and cell phones. This means writing a system from the ground up that accommodates ARM processors, the architecture that powers those smaller devices, which happen to comprise the largest growth segment of digital devices. Therefore it's imperative that Microsoft enter the domain with a unified platform if they are to defend their long-term dominance over the PC market and assert themselves in the mobile arena.

Hopefully, the PC shell will not be limited to live tiles. I see tablet computing is a fad that will soon peak and then level off as its own field of computing. There will, until implantable interfaces are developed, always be a need for the desktop machine. The two fields are distinct, and blurring the line to this degree might just alienate the powet- and enterprise user.

*EDIT: I just noticed where they're packing Win7 in there for compatibility. That's a relief, but how bloated will this mofo be?

Not unless you can afford to keep buying a new computer.

Can you have sex with it? Only if A) you can fit it up your ass or B) if your cock is small enough to fit in the crevices.
