Title: OLD PEOPLE QUERY
Post by: Extra Zero on Dec 17, 2004, 12:22:14 AM
Why is it that retail situations, old people insist on holding up the line by picking through their coin purses to get you exact change.  If all of them pay in exact change, where does the new coin come from?

Remember that if you ever need to blow up a robot.

Middle-aged people have always been the bigger culprits than the old people in my experience.  And old people usually have another excuse to go with it like a broken hip or senility.  But really most old people don't do that to me.  I guess they figure in a situation where they have to go through all of their change, I'm still more likely to outlive them.

Regardless, I love how ir seems to them like breaking a twenty is a satanic ritual.  God, I want this week to be over so I can just get back to selling computers and taking phone calls.

Our old people problem here is size ratio - the smaller the little old lady, the bigger and slower the car, and I get stuck behind at least one going 15-20 every damn morning.

Yet another cool thing about my dad.  He drove a red Beretta when he was 71   :D

My grandma's 80 and she fucking goes 80, I swear.

Yea, anyway.  Old people suck.  I hate waiting on them because I have to repeat myself and I hate doing that.  I had some old lady get mad because she couldn't order a grill cheese sandwich off the kids menu - hello, you have to be 10 and under.  I said that we could make her one but she refused.

Possibly because they somehow managed to reach adulthood without psychobabble experts on TV ordering their parents to bubble-wrap them because responsibility would destroy their self-esteem.   <_<

That's dumb! At McDonalds I can get a Happy Meal for myself any time I want!  You should be ashamed of yourself for torturing that old woman!

I would have gone as far to say to her family "yeah when Alzheimer's hits, it really hits hard. This one seems to think she's 10 years old."

Not that I don't have gripes with old people, their slowness, their senility, their radical driving of the fast and slow variety, and the fact I've never been able to relate to a single one...  as well as that constant stench of imminent death around them (similar to the stench of germs, slobber, and shattered promises I get around children), but I have more problems with their younger "counterparts".  At least if they're rude or something, you can chalk that up to oldness or having grown up in a backwards racist/sexist/whateverelseist age and say "good, that bitch will die soon anyway".  And old people don't have a lot of energy to gripe like a younger person does.   Younger in any sort, child, teen, adult, pre-senior, whatever.  I'd rather have to deal with Grandma Falls-Apart and her Jar of Endless Pennies any day of the week....

I love old people.  They'll say anything.  They're better'n little kids when you get them going.

I think they count out change and everything because A) yeah, they've slown down, B) many are trying to be helpful, C) many are skinflints and don't want to break a dollar, and D) they don't trust young people not to take advantage of them.

I got an old lady who wanted to count out change and I thought of you, Handy.

Just to let all of you know: if you refuse a customer the "kid's meal" price/portion you are in fact breaking discrimination laws. Notice that on the menu it's going to always say "Kids under 12, please" this also applies to senior discounts.

We have a light menu on the back for lighter appetites.  The lady could have ordered a grill cheese sandwich ala carte.

I don't understand senior citizen discounts, why should we give them less?  When I was a senior in high school I wanted a senior discount.

Heh, I always tip 20%, unless the service is so piss poor that I can't even get a re-fill.  However, if it's uber-busy, I respect that and make an exception.

The amount of tip I give is directly proportional to A) how well I'm served and B) how hot the waitress is.  If you're a guy server, well, you're SOL if you don't really kiss my ass.

Back to old people: there were two octogenarians on a park bench.  One of them gets a sour look on his face, looks at the other old man, and says, "Did you just fart?"

"Of course I did," said the other senior.  "What, you think I smell like this all the time?"

As long as a customer isn't an ass about it, I'll senior discount their meal.  If it's some anal-retentive entitlement-minded douche bag who thinks I just should because I'm working a low-paying job and they do something that requires a suit so they're better than me, they can forget it.  In fact, Bitch Mode Activated.

And I tip 15% at restaurants.  If they're rude or the service is just bad they can forget a tip.  And I'm usually lenient about things like the food being late.   At least it got there.  What gets me is when I ask for some silverware or a piece of bread and they forget about me.  Tip?  What tip?  That's right, bitch.

I always tip $2 now unless the service is downright craptastic.  Like So and So from Perkin's - I don't remember the last time I tipped him.

Last night sucked because there was only two of us, and we got busy, and I had a trainee following me around.  Now, when we get busy like that, I tend to go it at my own and my own speed.  I just hate training people in general.

While I use a percentage as a guide, it's not a rule.  If they're good to me, I'm good to them (if you consider the rounded up value of 20% to be good)  If they're really good, though, I don't think twice about putting more on the table.  It's part of the cost of eating out somewhere decent.

With my biggest pet peeve being cold food, though, I don't really take that out on the tip or the server.  If there's a problem with that which can't be solved by sending it back, I just ask for the manager and expect gift certificates for the trouble :P

Yeah, if they're good, I don't hesitate adding a few extra bucks to the tip.

A server really has to be a moron to get less than 20% from us.  Or an arrogant asshole.  And if you frequent a place, word will get around if you tip well.  We have regular servers at our favorite pub, and we're always getting drinks comped & stuff.
