Title: Scott Adams finally writes something funny!
Post by: B E C K on Mar 28, 2011, 12:42:56 AM
Okay, I lie.  So I've chuckled at Dilbert a few times.

'Dilbert' Creator Scott Adams Compares Women Asking for Equal Pay to Children Demanding Candy

The thing I guess I find funny is not what he wrote but some of the reactions to it.  HE'S THE GUY WHO WRITES DILBERT.  It's fucking Dilbert.  These days I'm not even reading it unless (1) I'm bored in my cube at work--hell, I even read Curtis--or (2) I'm taking a giant shit and have the newspaper in the bathroom with me.  But people on some feminist site and on other places that have reposted it are all "OMG ill nvr rd DILBERT a gain".  Dude, really?  Who gives a shit what his opinion on anything is?

I think my problem is that he went and deleted it, which made it look like he had something to hide, with some bs excuse about how it was taken out of context (so he removes it completely from the context, uh huh) and attracting outside readership (don't you want more hits on a website?).  Then he posts this giant explanation in his blog about how everyone outside of the high-on-the-bell-curve readership of Dilbert is too emotional and lacks reading comprehension.  The only thing worse than explaining a joke is too talk down to someone while explaining a joke.  And he reposted the post's content anyway so what was the point of deleting it?

I'm annoyed Dilbert's made this fart so rich.

I hate Calvin and Hobbes. There...I said it. Everyone thinks it's so great, but I hate it.

Nothing to do with anything you said, but I had to get that off my chest.

Nothing he said was that big of a deal.

I was never really wowed about it either.

I just realized today that Dilbert is on the cover of this month's Reader's Digest.

People love finding things on the internet at which to be offended.  I think it's our new national pasttime.

The comments seems offensive, but who the fuck cares.  He shouldn't have backpeddled and the rationalle of his elaborate explanation was just absurd.  This guy is a really irrational person who attempts to use a ton of logical arguments to justify his completely nonsensical behaviour after the fact.  It's kind of fascinating really...

I wasn't aware that appreciation for a particular comic strip imbued one with a soul. What about all those poor children born after the guy cashed in his chips? Especially those born (and died) before it was invented?

Oh, the humanity.

Even though I believe since Charles Schulz is dead, Peanuts needs to GTFO of the newspaper?  He's dead and there are no new ones.  The fact that this is taking up real estate when you can go buy them all in books infuriates me.

I agree with you on Peanuts. Are Calvin and Hobbes still showing up in papers? (I have not even looked at a newspaper in two years or so)

Nope.  But I only brought up Peanuts to see if that also negated the existence of my soul.

No. I love Peanuts, but it doesn't need to be in the paper anymore.

What's to discuss? At the current rate at which the print news media is dying off, it'll all be moot soon enough.

By quoting stuff that is clearly unfunny, I believe you are agreeing with him.

I am.  Aren't, like, Mort Walker and company as old as the hills?  Get some fresher blood.

I don't think you'll ever have strip comic superstars again like Charles Schultz or Jim Davies. I think anyone worth a damn is taking their comic online and thus keeping all the money they make for themselves rather then having a publisher and agent take most of the money. Plus they don't have to be at the mercy of censors and editors either. Strip comics are dead, they are only waiting on the old guard to die off or retire before call time of death.

It probably doesn't help that the real estate keeps shrinking.  But my god.  I can't stand looking at Fred Bassett and picturing that guy making money off of that.
