I asked some geeks I knew if they knew good video cards for $150 or less, and one said ATI 9800.
Well it just so happens the 9800 is like $250-$300, and in some places $400!
How the hell can I play doom 3 on this thing without a good video card, or without spending my life's savings?!?!
-
Lucipher is willing to accept your soul, I've heard.
-
1) What is your current card?
2) A Radeon 9800 Pro should only be 150-200 dollars. Look online. I suggest www.newegg.com
3) Video card isn't everything. Upgrading your CPU and/or RAM speed/size can make a big difference, too.
4) Doom 3 sucks, go buy Half-Life 2 ;)
5) PC Gaming is expensive ={
-
Hell, just wait for the Xbox version.
-
^
That version's gonna get a bit neutered as I have read...
I'd be playing Halo 1 or 2 instead... if I had an Xbox. Or actually, Ninja Gaiden probably.
-
And Half-Life 2 probably has the same system requirements, right? I guess you're screwed, D.

D, you should really be looking into a new processor. Some of the newer processors will support Dual Graphics cards. What you can do with that is buy two cheaper cards like two 9700s, but get much, much better preformance out of them than you would a single high-end card.
-
But then the motherboard for said processor would cost twice as much as a single card.
-
THEN STOP BITCHING AND JUST BUY A FUCKING XBOX.
-
When the Bitch tells you to stop bitching, I think it's a sign you've surpassed your monthly quota.
-
No shit.

Isn't that like... SLI... and it's the motherboard that provides that?
Well, according to some benchmarks and reviews, two Nvidia 6800 GT's didn't run very well in that configuration...
-
Really? Because from what I saw it ran Doom 3 on the highest settings with only occasional drops to 27 FPS.
-
La la la la la, computer crap, stupid fucking numbers and abbreviations.
S'why I never managed to get into PC games. Too much hardware concern and not enough attention or discusion on game design itself.
-
Heh, Half-Life 2 is the only reason I'm even bothering to get a graphics card. It has some of the most hardcore gunfights I've ever seen in a first person shooter. Every time I've watched my best friend play it I'm really amazed at how ingenious the gravity gun is. In all the previews, they make it look like all you could do with it was pick things up and push things away to knock people down, but there are soooo many uses for the thing. You can pick up a grenade, mid-flight and send it back to the enemy, pick up a saw blade or a loose industrial fan blade and cut a row of zombies in half at the torso, use objects to block doors from enemies and even set up a barricade of exploding barrels. I would wait for the Xbox version of the game (which will probably pushed back to the Xbox Next despite how low the system requirements are) but the game probably won't translate well onto a controller.
-
The first Half-Life works fine on a controller.

I don't want to give Bill Gates any more money!

So you'd rather spend about a thousand on shit for your PC than $200 for a new Xbox and a game? You, sir, are a fucking dumbass. I'm going to laugh if you needed that thousand to winterize your car. Or if you didn't winterize your car and need the cash because your engine failed or something.

I dunno man, I don't think HL2 will work well on a console unless they make it change around the weapon select system. Same thing with Doom 3 (which the console version better have the duct-tape mod as an automatic feature). From what I've seen of HL2, you HAVE to be really quick when it comes to changing weapons--and there are alot of weapon specific enemies that will hit you all at the same time. I don't like the idea of hitting left 9 times to get to my bug controller then right 9 times to get to my crowbar to take out some head-crabs. They really need to adopt a Ratchet and Clank style weapon system where the action pauses as you select your weapon.

Before Bitch starts throwing a fucking fit here I think she needs some stuff explained to her.
First, you assume I'm broke. I do have a job unlike some jobless bums. And I don't spend my paychecks the instant I get them, but rather put most of them in a bank account to save. I've gotten around... $2000 or so in savings. I don't blow my money by gambling or on ciggerettes or beer or drugs.
However, even having some money doesn't mean I want to spend it all on anything. Video cards can be extremely expensive. A brand new one comes out at $600-800. That's enough to buy a decent computer. By the time it goes down to $100, it won't play any new games. I don't want to spend $600 for some shit like that and waste my money.
So I'm going to wait to see if any 9600 or 9800 goes on sale for $100 or less, and buy it.
You assume that because I'm bitching about cost, that I'll go out and "spend about a thousand on shit", when I'm bitching because I don't want to spend a lot so I can save my money for more important things.
And there's nothing on the Xbox that's worth buying it except for Halo 2 maybe.
-
And speaking of my car, I almost made a bitch thread about that too. I took it in for a winter chell at a new shop, and they gave me a list of everything that needed to be fixed. And they tried to gouge me.
I need a new battery, and they wanted $150 to put a new one in. I could do it myself for cheaper.
They wanted to replace my rusting exaust for $600 when I could do it at midas for $250.
They wanted to replace my brakes for $400 an axle, when I could go to a discount shop and get them for $150 an axle.
So I'm never going to go there again, and my car is winterized, and I've saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to geico.
-
So you're complaining for the sake of complaining? You're not even going to do anything, you're just gonna sit there and piss and moan because you want to? There are much better ways to get attention, you know.
-
So uh, if you have Doom 3 now, you can use the tweakguide thing here...
www.tweakguides.com
Btw, the best console commands(which would should put into an autoexec.cfg file) I think are those culling commands where it doesn't render what you can't see, which equals better performance.

Try anal.

ooooooo, kinky Nuri-chan!

I'd start wondering where they put their wrenches besides in your car.
-
In a toolbox.

00, it takes just as long to change your weapons from the D-pad as it does from the keyboard, when they group the weapons so that you cycle through groups of them with left and right.
And carrying all your crap on you is stupid and archaic anyway. That's one of the things that makes Halo so great, is that they recognize that. Of course, they're still fully unaware of how annoying and crippling the first person perspective is.
