I'm planning on going to a university this winter rather than my college. That is, if I can afford it.
Since it's farther from home I considered living on campus. Then, a few days ago, a friend of mine who goes to this university told me that he needs a new roommate next semester. So I offered to drive over and take a look at his accomidations.
Now I'm disappointed.
When I got to his dorm block, there was no parking. Guest parking was packed (probably by students.. fuckers) and the ajacent lot was a permit-only lot and packed as well. So If I live there I'll have no place to park. Strike one.
We had to park about 5 minutes away which wasn't bad, and we went to one of the campus eateries, which wasn't bad either.
My friend showed me his dorm. The building is a squat 5 story brick building that looks like a mental ward. The entire building has a 50's look to it. The corridors are narrow with cinder block walls and tile floors and low ceilings.
The room itself was 10x10 or so. Aluminum windows that barely kept out the cold, and the only heat from a register under it. Freezing tile floors. Brick walls. A bunk bed and a futon take up half the room. And a tiny table along one wall held two computers. The bathroom was shared with the next dorm and had NO locks on the inside, so if you're taking a shit/shower someone from either dorm could walk in the bathroom.
The only redeeming quality was that it had broadband and cable. Strike 2.
Then my friend told me how much it would cost. He says it's about $6500 per semester. Or around $1500 or so per month. Strike three, you're fucked.
I didn't really want to live in a dorm in the first place, and now I really don't. I'd rather live in a communal house/apartment. Unless scholarships paid for that dorm, I can't afford it.
The person has another interested party that wants an answer now, and I'm thinking my friend should let him live with him.
I'd ask if you guys think I should live in this dorm, but you'll probably think I'll blame you if things don't go the way I wanted them to.

Nah, I don't have that much money. Is there anyway you can pretty the room up, plus you can always buy locks from lowes, cost real cheap and ez to install, plus you can always remove and spackle when you're done.

but better is to get an apt near the university if not on campus. you have more privacy and you don't have the pain in the ass regulations that the dorms can have
