I don't get this. I'm an Eagle Scout myself, and damn proud. If a bunch of soldiers get together and say let's send some money to support some scouts, please, let them. From the standpoint of other decisions made in the past, I understand the dealings with Chicago.
My biggest beef is that they're calling the Scouts a religous organazition. My father, who has been the Scoutmaster of my troop for over ten years, has never forced a religious belief on anyone, and any troop that's doing that is not doing as it's supposed to. He does pray before meals, and invites anyone to do so with him, but does not force them. Two of my best friends in the troop were completely and openly atheistic, and nobody in the troop had any problem with that. When we talked about duty to god and country, it was about what you believe in, not what Christians believe in.
Beyond that, they're are certain pins, Duty to God awards, that include over 30 different official religions. These are just the ones that have a strong enough following for the national scouting program to include them. There's no one in the program that says you have to be Christian, they're not taking away anyone's religous freedom. Like I said before, if they're doing it, they're doing it wrong.

My dad was an Eagle Scout, too. :) He got some kind of recognition as well for attaining the rank at 13.
Part of the problem is the groups trying to give the Scouts a religious affiliation like these fuckheads (http://www.saveourscouts.com/). I finally had to write "NEO-NAZI HATE MAIL NOT ACCEPTED AT THIS ADDRESS" across one of the mailings they kept littering my mailbox with. The sad thing is that they got my address from one of two groups I've donated to - the Admiral Nimitz Foundation, which honors WWII soldiers stationed in the Pacific (like my dad) or the Paralyzed Veterans Foundation. Neither group will get any further donations from me - I'll take cash to the Veterans Hospital.

Agreed on that. I honestly don't like the ACLU very much to begin with, but this goes against something personal. I don't know what to say.

Why did they stop funding the Boy Scouts? It's the Girl Scouts that need their funding cut.

I have a very low opinion of the Boy Scouts at the moment.
Although I like the idea of the Boy Scouts teaching boys respect for nature, and to enjoy the enviroment, how to do things themselves and be independant, I hate hearing about Gays being outsted from the Boy Scouts, or atheists being kicked out. Religion and Scouts should not mix, and I don't give a fuck how the club started out.
The boy scouts need to be non-secular.
As for Girl Scouts, I tire of the entire program looking like it's teaching girls how to be good housewives. "Now girls, we'll be learning how to cook brownies today!" "But I want to learn how to build a campfire!" "Now now, building campfires is not a lady like thing to do. Let the men do that kind of stuff."

I geuss the views on religion differ for some troops, but the one I was in would never have told a gay to get out, it just would've been somewhat akward around shower time, seeing as how many of the latrines had 'community showers' as in no blinds or stalls or such, it would make me a bit uncomftorable at least.
Of course, not knowing whether or not any of the guys were homosexual, I don't really know what they would have done, but I certainly don't think they would have ran him off.

Jeal's biography of Baden-Powell provides seemingly endless details to support his conclusion that Baden-Powell, who literally wrote the book on scouting, was gay.
