Title: Contractions
Post by: Fiero on Feb 16, 2010, 10:43:13 PM
Fuck them. Seriously. I personally feel they are damned pointless and often make no sense.

I'd = I would / I had / I should? How the fuck does one apostrophe equal almost a WHOLE FUCKING WORD, and three different ones at that!

That is probably the stupid of them, but seriously, I am ready to just say fuck it to all contractions. Fuck it. Seriously.

Oh! I totally fucking forgot!! The where / we're and there / their / they're fuckups would be greatly alleviated if it were not for stupid ass contractions.

I could've sworn I had one somewhere, but I apparently didn't name it something I'd remember like "brainexplodey.gif".  (http://www.rabbitinasuit.com/emoticons/A-D/cyst.gif)

They have tried to keep the story from us, the men of the beard red, but we must persevere and learn the truth, and the bring the prophecy to fruition, because I hear we are gonna get laid.

Redheads will soon become extinct.  The strong, black-haired people will rule the earth.

I think then that all of us with the red haired gene should go forth and fuck all the women with the same red haired gene in order to insure the survival  of our race.

That's how I am as well. My hair just kept getting darker as I got older till it turned brown. Beard is only red when it's short, longer it gets the darker it gets.

Was that the poor fellow who got DQ'ed because his coach told him to change lanes?

I try to avoid typing them, since they are not supposed to be typed.

This has kinda been nagging me.  What does that mean anyway?  Like is Tom-D trying to avoid them so he doesn't stick them in papers, official correspondences and whatnot?
Title: Re: Contractions

They are not supposed to be used for formal papers. I think forum posts are a legitimate use, as most forum posts are part of a dialogue, and contractions "flow naturally," in conversations. I just think they are stupid.
Title: Re: Contractions
Post by: B E C K on Feb 25, 2010, 01:55:32 AM
Yeah, I tend to defer to that also when I write papers and formal correspondence, but heck no will I do it on a forum.  In fact, it used to be a major peeve of mine many, many moons ago to have people all "I will not go", "I do not think", "You did not do", "They are okay", and never use contractions because I expected people on forums to post as they speak and not using contractions in casual speech seems abnormal for most.

One thing I miss about grading papers is noting the contractions as wrong, and then getting arguments over their validity in academic writing.
