Title: Yay, racism!

I mean, boo.   :look:

RACIST TECH:

Article discussing the above: Face-Detection Cameras: Users' Racism Charges Explained (http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20100122/wl_time/08599195464300)

RACIST BOOKS:
Magic Under Glass: The White-Washing Of Young Adult Fiction Continues (http://jezebel.com/5451058/magic-under-glass-the-white+washing-of-young-adult-fiction-continues)
Dragons Can Be Whitewashed Too (http://peteredmundlucy7.blogspot.com/2010/01/dragons-can-be-whitewashed-too.html)  Apparently, Chinese dragons do not sell as well as non-Chinese dragons.  This is because we can better relate to non-Chinese dragons.*

RACIST MOVIES:
Extraordinary Measures? Yellowface? via Roger Ebert (http://www.racebending.com/v3/featured/extraordinary-measures-yellowface-ebert-speaks/)  HARRISON FORD IS FUCKING TAIWANESE?

JUST PLAIN CULTURAL IGNORANCE PPL ARE CALLING "RACISM":

AND SOMETHING EXTRA:
NOCs (Nerds of Color) (http://www.startribune.com/yourvoices/82188702.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUUUKcOy9cP3DieyckcUsI) Excerpt:
Quote
And you’d think that fellow nerds, regardless of race and gender, would understand given that our status as freaks and geeks and outcasts would give us some humility and common ground to stand on. Unfortunately, this is not often the case. Try bringing up issues of race, class, gender, and homophobia on a video game message board and see the vitriolic response you get, no matter how diplomatic you try to be. Bring up issues of representation and race to fans of Battlestar and Firefly and get told that you’re a killjoy or one of the “PC police” who doesn’t understand what their favorite show is trying to do. Bring up the relative absence of Asian men in American pop culture and people invariably bring up Bruce Lee – without acknowledging the fact that he was passed over for the television show he created, Kung Fu, for a white actor, and had to go to Hong Kong to find success. Point out that The Last Airbender has an almost all-white cast and people will say, since they’re animated and fictional, they’re not supposed to be Asian – while ignoring that, even when the characters are supposed to be Asian, Hollywood makes them white anyway (see the movie 21, based on a true story where almost all of the real life people involved were Asian Americans, or if you need to stay with nerd references, see Bulletproof Monk, where the Asian American character in the comic is replaced by a white guy).

*Yeah, I think it's just silly, too.  However, the story is lent credence when you realize the book is not even about dragons at all.  It's "the first anthology of fantasy and science fiction stories by ethnic Chinese outside China" (http://www.sfsignal.com/archives/2009/10/toc-the-dragon-and-the-stars-edited-by-eric-choi-and-derwin-mak/).  The title and pictoral use of a dragon should've conveyed China.  A dragon looking like Maleficent's bastard cousin doesn't cut it.

I think terrible TV is a equal opportunity thing. After all "Till Death" was created by a guy and I want to put a gun in my mouth after watching that. Then again "Accidentally on Purpose" was created by a woman and it has a similar effect.

But I mean I don't think it's like driving where you know it's a proven fact women suck at it.

Then the Empire has already won.

Women don't exclusively make horrid TV, I love the Sarah Silverman show. Humourless hacks make horrid TV, and get paid alot to churn out the same show.

Yes.

No, the white woman was not naked.

My classmate's friend (also black) runs a reselling shop.  She got tired of people always trying to haggle with her so she hired a white woman to work the counter and the haggling virtually disappeared.

I think terrible TV is a equal opportunity thing. After all "Till Death" was created by a guy and I want to put a gun in my mouth after watching that. Then again "Accidentally on Purpose" was created by a woman and it has a similar effect.

Terrible TV in itself IS equal opportunity.  The chance to make TV at all, however, is not.

I've noticed most women are funny to other women moreso than they are to men.  The reverse does not hold true.

My experience is not unique.

That is all.

In what context is this in?  Do you mean women you've seen or talked to in person, women on tv, or both?

Jews are a religion, not a race. They may say so, but there's divisions within that 'race' that I know of.

Title: Re: Yay, racism!
Post by: Fiero on Feb 03, 2010, 07:45:12 PM
But the title "Jew" does not just describe the religious aspect.

It can be conclusive when you say "Jew" to mean that the person is of Jewish descent and practices the Jewish religion, or it could just be the heritage, or it could just be the religion. Its really not that simple.

In what context is this in?  Do you mean women you've seen or talked to in person, women on tv, or both?

Both.  Seen and talked to/observed laughing at other women in person or on tv.

I don't see this as sexist it simply is what is it.  So when someone says "women aren't funny" I'm inclined to agree...to a point.

I would say "most" women aren't funny.

There are of course exceptions.  You for instance have made me laugh before.  I can count on one hand the number of women that have said/written /done something that made me laugh in the past 5 years.

And it's not like "Oh I better not laugh if they do something funny! Gotta hold these chicks down!"  Women's antics simply just aren't that funny to me and many other guys that I've spoken with.

Also, the exceptions are usually doing something blue.

Women that make me laugh that I don't know: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza, Kristen Wiig, Sarah Silverman, Mindy Kaling, I'm sure there's more. The problem is not women who make TV, it's shifty people who make TV. If your sitcom needs a laugh track, then it's probably not that funny to begin with. The guy who created The Office, his name escapes me, he gets it.

I once watched a documentary on Monty Python coming to America, and one of the commentators said it quite well, I paraphrase, "In American comedy, we explain the joke, tell the joke, then explain why it's funny." Also, I don't give a shit about drama unless they're is a sci-fi element.

Ha, yeah, that.

Re: Woman and comedy.  Considering there's so much unfunny stuff out there, I don't think it could hurt for women to be given a better shot at some of this shit.  The fact is that they simply aren't.  When I thought about funny men vs. funny women, no one makes me laugh that much more than the other.  It's just that they're more men out there, period.  I don't think women are given much of a chance of being funny either, not as writers or actresses.  (Kinda like a Looney Tunes thing where no one wanted to drop an anvil on or blow up a girl.)

Quote from: IDE
You for instance have made me laugh before.

If you knew me in person, I would be counted right along those unfunny chicks.  I don't tend to crack jokes at school or work or with people I barely know.  I'm kinda uptight at first, to the point where if I cuss or something, I tend to get this WTF stare like the notion was at first inconceivable.

Just racism. Best line from Blazing Saddles; "We'll take the Niggers and the Chinese, BUT NO IRISH!". That's why I'm convinced soon 'Hispanic' will vanish from the American census form and all will be assimilated into 'White' just to piss off the more visually recognizable minorities.

Well my guess is that after being with someone for a long time and listening to her/him talking in another language, you start "assimilating" it, like without noticing it you start understanding stuff. Happened to me with this one and also with my best friend of years ago that was arab, at the end I could understand a lot of her conversations with her family.

This one's a Texas story:

Democratic candidate for governor Farouk Shami says white people not willing to work in factories (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/politics/state/stories/021210dnmetshami.1100b45ac.html).  I like to say his name Shamu, like the dead whale.

Quote
Democratic candidate for governor Farouk Shami said Friday that white people are not willing to work in factories and as a result, Hispanic labor is essential to the Texas economy.

Shami, a Houston hair care magnate, made the statements during a taping of WFAA’s Inside Texas Politics, which airs at 9 a.m. Sunday on Channel 8.

“A majority of the people are going to be Hispanic and African-American,” he said. “You don’t find white people who are willing to work in factories. And our history proves lots of time when … the white people come to work in a factory they either want to be supervisors or they want to be paid more than the average person. And unfortunately they exit.”

...

“I don’t know what Mr. Shami was talking about,” [frontrunner in the race, Bill] White said. “Texas is too good for stereotypes. Everybody is made in the image of God.”

[Story continues at link above...]

Ahaha, Bill White, you make me laugh.  As for Shamu, he shot that one through his blow hole.  We're a big state and there are poor white Texans just as willing and eager for factory work that he basically alienated.  Anyway, neither of these guys is gonna win.  This state's still too red, so it'll be Rick Perry or Kay Bailey Hutchinson.

She's gaining in the polls and Hutchinson is sliding back a bit. She went from 4% in November to 16% in February (2nd). Plenty of people are pissed about Hutchinson's Washington politics, and it is starting to show effect. Medina is supported by the tea party- I'm so glad they stopped calling them teabaggers -and her support is growing. Whether she's worth a damn, I don't actually know.

'Blacked up' Gerard Depardieu sparks race row (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-news/7275213/Blacked-up-Gerard-Depardieu-sparks-race-row.html)

Quote from: Telegraph.co.uk
Depardieu has rejected the discussion over his right to play the mixed-race author Alexandre Dumas because he is a blue-eyed blonde.

He said the debate over his role as The Three Musketeers writer in the big-budget production L'Autre Dumas is "ridiculous" and "unnecessary".

But France's Representative Council for Black Associations has questioned whether he should have been cast as a man with Afro-Caribbean heritage, saying black actors are not chosen to play white roles in French cinema.

Depardieu said the issue is "not interesting" and "not a problem".

Dumas was the grandson of a Haitian slave.

Yeeeeeah, I really had no idea Dumas had some Haitian blood.  Learn something new everyday.

Also, semi-OT I saw Depardieu's turn as the Count of the Monte Cristo in the four-part mini-series of the same name.  Each part was about movie size.  1-2 were pretty much brilliant but in 3 it starts to unravel and by 4 it was a downhill slope of wtf.  Eugenie Danglars was cut out completely.  Most of the movie had the count hooking up with some pale Titian-haired waifette Camille De La Richardais.  Who the FUCK is that and why did they even bother?  She wore out her welcome hella fast, but no, she had to stay for the entire frickin' series and was all sobbing "i love j00" to the count.  Then at the end, Dantes ends up with Mercedes while Haydee and Franz d'Epinay hook up.  Teh fuck?  The Haydee they had was beautiful and she was cheated out of screen time.  As was the actress who played Mercedes.  For who, some dumpy odd looking bird-woman?  Was this a color-slight of some kind or is Darel big in France or some shit?  Or did Depardieu just have to "make it with her" because then I'm really apalled.  =p

Gankutsuou?  Merla (a Monte Cristo fan, I should add) and I loved it.  Has its deviations of course but was more faithful to the story than the Depardieu live-action one, that's for sure.  Is was also pretty to look at it.

Depardieu is a great actor, but that nose of his is distracting. It looks like he'd use it to root in the dirt for truffles or something. Prime candidate for a nose job if I ever saw it.

And I'm not surprised over the 4 part miniseries being all romantic and crap... it's France, everything has to be about love or sex over there....
Title: Re: Yay, racism!

That's not true. They take time out of love and sex to drink and surrender.

Those weren't really the major problems with it.  I had no issue with them wanting to focus on the more romantic aspects of a body of work, but adding in some non-existent character to that end and changing the ending is a no-no.

Anyway, yeah, his nose is huge.  Judging by his earlier work, it apparently bloated with age.

Just a casual mention on the website.

Eight teens shot in Gary
from: http://www.post-trib.com/news/2087665,gshoot06.article

Quote
Eight teenage boys suffered gunshot wounds late Friday night while exiting a popular Gary skating rink where they were attending a concert.
Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King said Saturday "all chaos broke loose" when a fight broke out during the event and security advised attendees to leave Skate World, 4415 W. 5th Ave. in the Commons shopping center.

King said no arrests have been made.

One of the victims told police he was shot in the stomach by a male black holding a rifle. He said the man was wearing a red hat and had dreadlocks.

The wounded were transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake in Gary, St. Catherine's Hospital in East Chicago and St. Margaret Mercy in Hammond.

Another victim said he was with a group of friends and they were asked to leave to avoid a fight with a group of males he didn't know. He said the suspects confronted him in the parking lot and someone started shooting. The teen suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg and was taken to St. Margaret.

Another victim told police he was inside Skate World and the crowd became disorderly. Security told the crowd to exit and when he stepped outside, he was shot in the left leg.

Police identified the wounded as: Shaquille Hughes, 15, shot in right side; Marcus Ratliff,14, shot in right wrist; Justin Bodley, 16, shot in the leg; Junan Washington, 18, shot in left ankle; DaVonte Biddings, 16, shot once in< back; Marquel Croock, 16, shot in stomach;Kesean Philon, 14,shot in leftleg; Stephan Danzy, 17, shot in left leg.

Gary police are still investigating the incident.
