NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The financial balance of powet in American marriages is shifting.
A Pew Research Center survey released Tuesday found that 22% of men made less money than their wives in 2007. By comparison, 4% of husbands earned less than their wives in 1970.
A shift in education patterns was a factor in the Pew report, which polled U.S.-born 30- to 44-year olds.
In 1970, 28% of husbands had more education than their wives. By 2007, that figure dropped to 19%.
Slightly more than half of spouses had the same education level in both 1970 and 2007, the most recent year for which data were available.
"For a long time, men didn't need education to make a decent wage -- they could go into manufacturing or other labor," said Jenny Wittner, associate director of the advocacy group Women Employed.
"Women had to get an education to keep up, and over the years that has started to translate into a difference in wages," Wittner added.
The report cited several societal and economic reasons for the jump. Marriage rates have declined across the board since 1970, and rates have gone down most sharply for the least educated.
The most educated are far more likely than those with less education to be married, and that gap that has widened since 1970. And since more education is linked to higher earnings, marriage especially boosts a household's spending powet.
Pew's report was compiled from data collected before the recession hit, and said that the downturn will only exacerbate those trends as men have especially felt the job crunch.
The report cited government data that said males accounted for about 75% of the 2008 decline in employment among "prime-working-age individuals." As a result, the percentage of women in the workforce continues to inch toward equilibrium, as women now comprise 47.4% of the total.
But Wittner noted "it may not stay a so-called 'men's recession' forever, and that shift will hurt households as the woman's income becomes more important."
Unmarried adults and the marriage advantage: For singles at all levels of education, men's incomes fared worse. In 2007, unmarried women had higher income than their 1970 counterparts. But single men without any college education saw their inflation-adjusted earnings decrease, and they did not have a wife's wages cushion the decline.
Similarly, single men who did not complete high school or who had only a high school diploma had lower household incomes in 2007 than their 1970 counterparts -- those with some college education saw income remain the same.
One exception to the marriage advantage: Married women without a high school diploma saw their inflation-adjusted household incomes fall 2% from 1970 to 2007, while those of their single counterparts grew 9%.

So, what is the reason you filter the word poweR to poweT?

My wife doesn't out-earn me!
Oh, yeah....

I kept doing that for months before I remembered to put the .tv at the end.
-
That's advertising. They should be paying you for that.
-
That article is right bitches. Soon women will control eeeeverything.
-
Well, since progressive generations of men appear to be getting more and more pussified, I figured everyone will be a woman in another eighty years.
-
That should please IDE the Ever-Living.
-
Please don't insult Mum-Ra like that.
-
And by association Ma-Mutt.
-
I have no goal to out-earn anyone, I'm ready to leave this whole capitalist money-obsessed country. When you have so much, and are worth so much, then you have more to lose.
I'd rather be comfortably poor.
-
I love beans and rice, so poor works for me, too. I'd like to eat more of it at a time, though.
-
I'd rather be comfortably poor.
I still think comfortably upper middle class would be nice. Not enough of an income to impulse buy on a regular basis, but where I can still have really cool shit as long as I save, plan for it, and sacrifice accordingly.
-

You can go to one of those Tennessee communities and live there in their hippie style of life . They seem fun.
-
Kary could verywell be earning more than me at the end of the month. Financial firms pay alot.

I'm not a fan of "communities". I've tried fitting in with groups of people, it never works out. I'm going to start planning for a future off the grid before the end of this year.
-
I want to live off the grid, but not cause I'm a hippie or think the word is ending or anything. I just don't want to pay monthly water and powet bills.
-
I want to live in the wild, and still have my internets and video games. And showers.
-
Good luck, pilgrim.
-
They have historic Plymouth up here. You can live like a Pilgrim. Then I'll come by daily and taunt you for doing meth and ruining your job prospects where you'd be yourself.
Just like that movie, Choke. Or was it The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus? I don't know.
-
Mrs. Tindall from my high school would call everyone pilgrim.
-
Was she related to John Wayne?
I fucking hate John Wayne.
-
What about Clint Eastwood? If you don't like Clint Eastwood, then you are not a man.
-
Pre or Post Unforgiven?
-
I hate him post! Okay, not really. Hate is a strong word. But I'd like to kick in his old buzzardy face.
-
Plus if not liking "The Bridges of Madison County" makes me less of a man, then I think that's something I can live with.
-
I don't see how anyone can hate John Wayne.
-
He was a rat. His 'Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals' was just an embarassment considering it attacked true American ideals, especially considering he was nothing but an actor.
-
Actors are never meant to be liked as human beings, look at IDE.
I keed! I keed! I love that horny little devil.
-
Yeah. He's a douche.
What? What are you looking for? There is nothing here. Move along.
-
*cough*
-
All this white space is giving me a headache.
So stop it.
-
I did nothing.
-

The only problem with it was that the mission failed. I suppose you hate Walt Disney, too. Call him a mouse, maybe.
-
I do hate Walt. Henry Ford, too. Just because they did great things doesn't make them great people. I think all three Kennedys were trash, too. I'm glad that Republican won his seat, now maybe the Dems will stop being slaves to Obama. Yeah, I used 'slave'.
-
Walt Disney eats immigrant children to stay alive as a cyborg. How could you respect that?
-
Also, he hated the Jews. Wonderful.
-
You don't make hate right by hating back.
-
I just hate people that hate people that hate.
-
You don't make hate right by hating back.
Who says I have to be the bigger man? Better to hate for the right reasons, like God wants us to.
-
"Hate for the right reasons"? What arbitrary metric are we using?
-
I think that was supposed to be humorous.
-
It always is. But Fiero won.
-
"Hate for the right reasons"? What arbitrary metric are we using?
I dun like that there metric system. *strums banjo*

PLAY SOME SKYANRD!!!
-
Sweet home Alabamy
Where the skies is so blue
Sweet Home Alabamy
Lawd, I'm coming home to yew...
-
Play Freebird instead or Simple Man...Yeah play Simple Man!
-
Sweet Home Alabama is the worst fucking song, made even more unbearable by Shit Rock.
Simple Man, however, is a tune from the gods.

Did any of you saw that episode from Wife Swap with "family A" being from Idaho, living from their own agriculture and cows, being all about "what will happen if an atomic bomb fell, we would be able to survive for one year without help"? They wash their teeth with a mixture of butter and I don't know what else. I almost puked. They also eat raw chicken.
-
I remember raw chicken family! Saw it a long time ago, but I remember that part. And the swapped wife didn't want to eat it because she was afraid of getting sick. Meanwhile, the other wife wanted her new family to eat shit raw or something.
-
You cannot eat chicken raw! WHAT THE FUCK? The human body is not properly adapted for raw meat. Good grief.
-
I've eaten raw beef and many raw fishies. Why does chicken have to be such a dick?
-
Well these folks were eating it and claimed they never got sick. IIRC, the visiting wife (the one visiting the raw food family) took them out to eat for normal cooked food and kids all got violently ill or some shit.
-
Que peculiar.
-
Yeah, and rofl'd. I knew I shouldn't have and I felt a little guilty. But then I laughed at a dead baby and I was filled with a whole new sense of guilt.
-
Don't be, dead babies exist all the time. It's impolite if you don't laugh. It's not impolite if you start masturbating. That's a felony.
:(
-
Yeah, and rofl'd. I knew I shouldn't have and I felt a little guilty. But then I laughed at a dead baby and I was filled with a whole new sense of guilt.
I know it was so funny. And the boy in that family was such a pussy, I was really raging about it. He was crying and shit and the dad was crying like a little bitch too.
I've also eaten raw fish (even now btw) and raw beef and love it, but I wouldn't eat raw chicken. Or pork. Love how that crazy woman licked the ground at the end
-
I can't eat raw. When I was younger, a medium rare hamburger made me sick. I did have a delicious medium rare steak last year and I felt fine, so maybe I just needed an older stomach to deal with it.
Heh, yeah, I remember the daddy crying. "Yew made mah kids sick!" or some crap like that.
-
I wouldn't eat anything raw, for sanitary/health reasons, but I've eaten barely cooked steaks before for the sheer heck of it. If the marination is right, you won't notice anything but a slicker texture.
-

This isn't the 19th century, if you know where your food is coming from chances are it's safe. Pork can be eaten medium rare.

give it to me raaaaree! bloody meat is soooooo gooooooooooooood. I miss it :-( Raw fish is gooooood too! Does caviar falls in the raw food category? I don't think so?

Would you eat a chicken egg raw? In the shell?
-
I don't eat anything raw. If god had wanted me to eat it raw he wouldn't have given me the ability to make fire.
-
Rama, that has got to be the most illogical thing I have ever read.
-
Shut it before I set you on fire and eat you!
-
Rama, that has got to be the most illogical thing I have ever read.
:lmao: PWNED.
-
Oh yeah, I feel it. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight because of it. I'll just toss and turn thinking about it and when sleep does come it will be filled with nightmarish ghouls repeating the pwnage over and over until I wake in a cold sweat, hand on my heart to make sure that it still beats alive in my chest. And as the crisp cold dawn breaks though the gossamer like curtains that try in vain to hold back the light, I will sit and think if life is still worth living after such a pwnage. I will consider the white pills that sit so near behind the glass of the medicine cabinet and the sweet release from the torment that they will bring. How my shame can so quickly be washed away in that instant of bliss that lays between the thin line of life and death, and what torments or pleasure may await me for my crimes and deeds and maybe even consider that only black nothingness is all that awaits me.
That or I'll just move on. You know one of the two.

Ala Rocky? No, BUT I do love eggs benedict and eat them once in a while. Even though I'm not "supposed" to. hmmm eggs benedict
-
It'll be the first one and you know it.
-
Yeah, FAYE!
-
It'll be the first one and you know it.
wat
-
That was for Ramalamadingdong.
-
Yeah he just acted like your post wasn't even there. He just totally ignored you. You can call him a prick now if you want. God knows he deserves it.
-
I'm sorry Faye. I don't know if you can ever forgive me, but if you can, please shoot Rama in a non-vital area.
-
Like the groin.
-
That's non-vital? Why did I get such a large fine for exposing mine?!
-
Yeah he just acted like your post wasn't even there. He just totally ignored you. You can call him a prick now if you want. God knows he deserves it.
Even better, I just took his last pellet. I hope he suffers.
-
That's non-vital? Why did I get such a large fine for exposing mine?!
I think it's more a subjective thing if it's vital or not.
-
You didn't question it's vitality last night.
-
But I was dead inside when I did that. I cried the whole time. Not that you care. As long as you get yours that's all that matters to you!
-
The tears let me know I'm doin' my job right.
-
Just let him use his hand already. It's too much for his throat alone.
-
It's not the same. Manual manipulation hurts sometimes.
-
Crisco? Baby oil? Clip his nails first?
-
He'd never clip his nails. He looks like Chewbacca with those hands.
-
The hair on the palms probably absorbs all the lube then.
-
Don't clone people from that hair. The results become skewed.
-
Like fucked-up transporters fusing people together. Ha, see what I did thar?
-
That's how Quatto from Total Recall was made.
-
Really? And here I thought two other chest people met each other and fell in love...
...well, not love. It's really nothing but lust for them these days.
-
Or was he on the dude's back? Bah, fuck it.
-
Starman wasn't fucked up!
