Why the fuck is this so popular?
I haven't seen it. I really didn't care that much to. When I first heard of it, I was all "wow, Sigourney Weaver's in it!" When I saw a teaser for it, I was all "what the fuck is this shit, those things are U-GLY!" When I looked the movie up and realized they made the Na'vi people of color and were doing this whole Magic Whitey bullshit (but, like, IN SPACE!!11), I admit I only lost more interest. I'll probably Netflix it eventually. Hell, I did that to the Abyss and I can't imagine anything being worse than that shitfest of a movie.
I know this was mentioned in the movie thread, but is it a new fetish to retarded-looking blue aliens or wut? This movie has already killed a man (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/01/19/entertainment/main6114914.shtml). No more need to die.
Also, Avatar-related links dumping ground:

DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU CAN'T WATCH IT IN 3D
Seriously, the plot is nothing special. Its just another telling of how awful humans and especially white people are and how we like to stomp on things we think are shiny.
The reason to watch this is the 3D effects, and the story is just strong enough that the whole experience is pretty awesome, but without the 3D, don't fucking bother. You won't care for it, I am sure of it. With the effects, it is awesome.
Nothing is worse than The Abyss.
-
Okay, I get what your saying, but 3D films make me ill after the first half-hour.
-
People are killing themselves because they can never live in the world presented. Fucking wierdos.
-
That understandable. I think we'd all like to be a little taller.
-
But the breasts are all far too small!
I'm sorry about not being able to stand the 3D. The movie is good without it, just nowhere near as good. Go watch it and if you end up leaving early go bitch at a manager to get a free pass for anther film.
-
"This dern thing is givin' me a headache! I want my money back!" I wonder how many people did that. Can't you just take the glasses off and sit for the rest? Not that I'd want to. Or do you see those little colored lines coming from shit?
-
I think this just setting up James Cameron to become dictator for life. Way to go guys.
-
Who has money on him being assassinated by a guy painted in blue?
-
Haha. So, yeah, you can take the glasses off. My parents said my one year old nephew did that at Disneyworld in the "Bugs Life" 3D ride thing like thing. He threw them off of his face on the ground as soon as a bug came at his face, but then got used to it.
-
Didn't see it and didn't plan to for a number of reasons. There's no 3D theater within two hours of where I live, I don't like theaters, anyway; it looked stupid, and I don't care for preachy movies. For instance, I got Dances with Wolves on VHS for two dollars with a Happy Meal (does anyone remember McDonald's doing this? It's how I got a lot of TMNT cartoons on tape in the day). It remains my worst-spent $2 ever. The tape was burned unceremoniously in the old backyard trash barrel.
-
@Rodent: I do remember that.
In your case, because there are no 3D theatres within your reasonable range, don't go see it. Its not worth it without the effect, IMHO.
-

And then he learned to love bugs that day.

:lmao: Even better was when I read this to Merla and she was all "That's not appropriate for a Happy Meal!"

I got Dances with Wolves the same exact way. But unlike you I sold it at swap meet for 2 bucks last year and thus got my money back.
And I remember getting TMNT tapes from Burger King.

I watched it on 3D and still don't care for it.
Have any of you heard about the new Avatar pr0n movie?
-
I really don't care for it at all.
My brother apparently saw it, told me he liked the visuals but the story was lacking.
-
That's exactly what I've been saying.
My biggest irritation was when their is an out of focus element in the foreground. Have I already mentioned that?
-

You mean people actually *did* pay money for that festing pile of crap? USED?! The only thing good about that movie was that Kicking Bird basically mocked his role by playing Joseph in Maverick.
And I remember getting TMNT tapes from Burger King.
Quite right. I'd forgotten.
-
How can you people not like Dancing with the Wolves?
-
I thought Dances With Wolves was ok. Not great, not bad. Just ok. I wouldn't mind to having it in my DVD collection, but I'm not going out of my way to get it. In fact it's been in the 5 buck bin here for awhile and I still haven't picked it up.
-

Well, the name of the thread is "fuckig avatar."
-
How can you people not like Dancing with the Wolves?
I've never seen it. I tried but decided to do something else within the first five minutes it started. Merla saw half of it (I think) and never bothered finishing it.
-
It's kinda an Anti-climatic ending.
-
Does it involve any breaking dancing canids?
-
Well...depends on if you are ever going to watch it. If you say no then I can just say yes and make you feel better about it. But if you then go watch it you'll be let down when you really see it.
What I won't tell you is that it's just Costner riding off into the snow hauling President Roslin behind him while an Indian is all like "Oh no...don't go Dances with Wolves we luvers you!!! Come back Shane, Come back." Cause that would be totally disappointing.
-
Pa's got things for you to do, Dances With Wolves! And Mother wants you. I know she does.
-
You know..Shane and Dances with Wolves do have a lot in common. I mean replace family farms with Buffalo, and Cattle Men with Army Men and Settlers and it's kinda the same.

Did he hook up with the girl? Did he?
-
Yes.
-
Did she get preggers or something scandalous like that? Or was it just like Pocahontas, slam wham thank you ma'am?
-
No. But she was a Honky taken and raised by the Indians. Thus the movie didn't promote interracial coupling.
-
Oh, well then that is stupid, but fits the Mel Gibson agenda.
-
Fake Indians should stick to other Fake Indians! None of this interbreeding nonsense, like hooking up with Fake Chinese or Fake Mexicans!
-
It's unnatural it is.
-
:poo:
-
Let's see how many geeks name their kids after the main characters of this movie. I saw a msn article about how this past year the names "Bella" and "Edward" were the most popular. fucking geeks. fuck.
-
They already are, I've heard.

"Neytiri" - http://www.babynamegenie.com/polls/148627/results
Here's one baby Neytiri... heh. http://www.glidercentral.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/893942/Meet_Neytiri
I've read a couple of things (i.e. speculative articles from such beacons of journalism like The Sun) about the supposed new wave of Avatar inspired names but have seen no data on it.
-
"I like it, I love different yet cute names.
tho i just have to say, that she might have to pron. her name for everyone her whole life."
It took me a minute to realize that this wasn't really bad English and that "pron" is supposed to be pronunciation.

When Will
White People Stop Making Movies Like "Avatar"? (http://io9.com/5422666/when-will-white-people-stop-making-movies-like-avatar?skyline=true&s=x) That article title would've made more sense but it wasn't just white folks who made this movie and then proceeded to snap up tickets like piranas drugged up on stupid. This kind of drones on and on to make its point; the quotes and comments are the better parts. It does contain this quote from a black sci-fi writer:
In the US, to talk about race is to be seen as racist. You become the problem because you bring up the problem. So you find people who are hesitant to talk about it.
True and sad.
Also quotes some blogger (http://remingtons.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/avatar-totally-racist-dude/) who says this, although I think the first half says it all better than the second:
By the end of the film you're left wondering why the film needed the Jake Sully character at all. The film could have done just as well by focusing on an actual Na'vi native who comes into contact with crazy humans who have no respect for the environment. I can just see the explanation: "Well, we need someone (an avatar) for the audience to connect with. A normal guy will work better than these tall blue people." However, this is the type of thinking that molds all leads as white male characters (blank slates for the audience to project themselves upon) unless your name is Will Smith.
-
Yeah she got pregnant and then they decided to get married because of that which is ALWAYS a good idea. Then 12 years later they got divorced (big surprise).
The End.

More liek the film didn't need any character, period. Freaking Ferngully ripoff!

No, you can't watch it without the glasses. At least, I couldn't when I pulled off my glasses a few times during the movie to see what it looked like without them.
-
My nephew is two. Just before his second birthday he went to Disneyworld with his parents, and my parents, and one of his other uncles family. They went to an exhibit they have there based on A Bug's Life. The first time a bug flew at him he threw his glasses off with vigor (I really wish they had videotaped it). He got used to it after awhile, but would still sometimes pull the glasses off.

When Will White People Stop Making Movies Like "Avatar"? (http://io9.com/5422666/when-will-white-people-stop-making-movies-like-avatar?skyline=true&s=x)
I like the guy in that article that said the movie was the best one-dimensional 3D movie he's ever seen.
Pocahontas trailer with Avatar audio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdIIqoDakHU&feature=related)
The way Na'vi get it on (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/524391) (NSFW for Sully's drinking straw (literally) penis)
This being the first 3D film I've ever seen I was wowed solely by the 3D. It was very pretty.
As for the movie I nitpicked about all sorts of little things. Like why the idiot humans didn't just drill a horizontal shaft under the tree. Or why an alien species would have the same sexual rituals as humans, like making out, or doing it the same way humans do. And the sex scene wasn't even much of a sex scene, but a suck scene. Or the battle scene at the end that made all the battles in every St*r WarzzZZ prequel look 10 times better.
I liked the movie, but realized it's pretty preachy and not a very complex plot, not to mention no complex characters or good one liners. There are much better movies last year than this. And the entire movie is basically Imperial colonization meets enviromentalism, or Pocahontas meets Ferngully, or a tree-hugging hippie's wet dream.
What stumps me is why conservatives don't like this so much. I had this one guy who I know (but don't like) say it was all liberal propaganda. A whole "Colored people are victims of evil white people" crap. I'm not exactly sure how relocating/killing indigenous populations and destroying the environment for the purpose of strip mining an area is liberal propaganda, since this kind of stuff has actually happened in the past. And some corporations will do anything to turn a profit, even illegal stuff, and if anyone gets in their way it's their funeral.
I figure that the people complaining about this being liberal propaganda are just people who want to find something to bitch and whine about, either because they're attention whores, or they want to put themselves on a mighty moral high horse and show how much better they are than others.
Either that or they feel the movie hits too close to home and they feel guilty for something.
-
Well, at least your parents are telling you its new age hippie religion propaganda.
