Anyone watch this thing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_2100)? I just happened to catch it the other day. When it got to the part about overpopulation, all I kept thinking about were of the damn people popping out kid after kid. A nice couple with two or three kids (or ppl like that guy with, like, a dozen adopted kids) is all right, but then there are these degenerates churning out mutant after mutant. Or that freak with the 21 kids! (http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7015333613) Couldn't they sterilize him after the tenth one or something? Shit.
I couldn't help myself every time this one old guy came on. I kept thinking, "what do you care, you'll be gone long before 2050, let alone 2100."
-
I'm actually a firm believer that a couple shouldn't have more then two kids. That way you are only replaceing yourself for when you die. Anything more adds to the population. And if you only have one kid...then you are actually turning two people into one. If everyone did that and the next generation did that. You'd start to see a population decline.
And then you got those Quiver full fucks. They just keep having kids and people just keep doing stories about them and giving them houses and basicly rewarding them for something they shouldn't be rewarded for. They don't need free diapers for life. They need to be smacked across the nose with a rolled up newspaper and told "NO!"
-
My personal stipulation on childbearing is, have only as many children as you can afford to raise. And not affording them by getting TV deals that exploit them.
-
That shit really irks me. It's child abuse.
I'm really sick of all of the poor trash that keep multiplying. They need to be stopped.
The people with their IVF piss me off, too. There was this couple on The Doctors the other day and after going on and on about their "miracle baby" (w/o IVF mind you) decided they wanted to give him/her a brother or sister. Don't be so damn greedy, you already got your miracle. How many miracles are you entitled to here? Why don't you go adopt and give some kid a miracle instead of trying to get one for yourselves. [They were advised that given the wife's condition, they would need IVF. Immediately after this answer they asked if they couldn't use acupuncture or herbal remedies instead. FTW.]
Back to the Earth 2100 thing, it also mentioned making a barrier to protect New York. Would that really be any cheaper and less time consuming that just steadily moving the city inland and to higher ground?
-
But then they wouldn't live in Manhattan anymore and it would be hard to act like they are better then everyone else.
-
I'm sure they can act better than everyone else anywhere they live.
-
They can try...but It's something about being on an Island. Maybe they can just dig a moat around Buffalo.
-
Every human living right now can fit on some small islands off of Britain. We'll be fine, especially once India and China start warring.

It would help if someone leveled China...but then where would we get our posioned toys....or pretty much everything else we use?
-
I chose not to buy a Haier a/c (which was cheaper but not energy star nor had the same BTUs) and opted for a more expensive, powerful, and energystar frigidiere a/c... and the fucker is made in China, probably in the same factory as the Haier. No wonder we're on our way out.

What is the likelihood of some mofo trying to re-create dinosaurs like in Jurassic Park succeeding? And then they start taking over and eating a bunch of us.
-
Very small, and it would never happen in China.
-
What if we do a good old Super Powers "Let's see who can make Man-Eating Dinosaurs first to prove we are better then the other guy" type Cold War thing?
-
That would be awesome.
Very small, and it would never happen in China.
Boo! Come on, they could have those little straw hats and attack us with chopsticks and fans.
-
Don't you know it sister.
-
And Rosie O'Donnell can attempt to translate for them before getting eaten horribly.
"Ching ching chong-- AAARGH!!!"
-
I'm not seeing a downside.
-
I know, right?
-
No, just no.
-
You're just an ManeatingDinocist! I, for one, am offended by your bigotry!
-
Dinosaurs deserve to marry like everyone else!
-
Hell no. It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and a fucking velicoraptor.
-
I don't know. Watching Jurassic Park those things had a lot of personality....
-
And I thought I beat off to wierd shit.
-
God created Adam and created Velociraptor out of Adam's rib.
I don't know. Watching Jurassic Park those things had a lot of personality....
That's right! Beauty is on the inside!
-
As is the Lawyer.

That's the physical space that each human occupies. You still need large tracts of land to grow the food to feed 6 billion people, plus the resources to harvest that food, the billions of gallons of water a year to give them to drink, the massive amounts of coal and oil and other energy sources that that 6 billion people consume a year. And with more and more countries becoming industrialized that means they require even more food and energy and fuel than before.
It's not just about the physical space people occupy but the space it takes to store and grow everything that keeps those people alive year after year. If it takes 10 acres a year to feed a man, then it would take 60 billion acres to feed everyone, and that's a lot of rainforest to mow down.
-
A majority of the Earth isn't properly used. Look at Siberia, incredibly fertile and ripe for massive greenhouses to churn out trillions of tons of food.
-
If you want to get down to liveable, the entire population could fit within the boundaries of Texas and maintain a population density equal to that of New York City. The rest of the world can be manned by robots who'd grow food and mine resources for human consumption.
-
If you had been here when 150,000 Katrina evacuees came in at once with very few places to house them and seen what happens when too many people have too little space indefinitely, you might not be wanting to cram everyone into Texas. :-\

I'm actually ok with this. That way I can continue to live in the lovely north east with my robot overlords. Robots can shovel and plow without effort and all I have to do is upkeep their solar arrays! BWUAHAHAHAHA!

Seconded. If I wanted to live in New York, I'd be in New York. Having to share space anymore than I do now would be hellish for me. When the world ends, you'll find me with Tom and Kary wiping Bender's ass in the robot camp.

When I start to look for a nice little plot of land to build my dream house on, I'm not gong to look for a nice .5 Acres to nestle it in. Instead I'm going to be looking for 30, 40, 125 Acre plots of land. That's basicly so I can build my house smack in the middle and keep everyone 15-50 acres away from me. If you get close enough to see my house it'll be cause I let you. No one is going to come knocking on my door asking me if I want pamplets from the Chruch of Christ of Latter Day Saints anymore. Hell I'd already be living in a self imposed Citzen Kane style exile from the world in my own private Xanadu right now if I could afford it.
-
And you'll still have dial-up.
We get the--well, I don't know what they are. I don't know if they're Mexicans or what. The majority of them are not bilingual. They're from some church or other and are at our door almost once a week. They actually came by just today. Usually, it's Sunday morning or afternoon. I'll answer the door most of the time, but everyone else here hides from them.
-
Sunday morning? Shouldn't they be in church.
And I figure if I can buy 100 acres of land and build my own Xanadu on it, that'll I'll be rich enough to afford that sat. Internet then.
-
Some people go in the evenings. Well, when I mean "some people", I mean "some Roman Catholics". I'm not familiar enough with other religions.
-
Or that Sat. Church. They do that there? I know they do here.
-
Yes. The people I know alternate going on either Sunday or Saturday, morning or evening, to whenever suits their schedules.
-
We get Jehovah's Witnesses every three weeks on Saturday mornings. Makes us happy to have 5 very expressive dogs and big front windows. They leave so fast they don't even drop off the Watchtower.
