PINE BUSH -- Joshua Phelps spent the weekend "fighting" off the Confederate Army while playing the role of a Union soldier during a Civil War re-enactment.
Now the Pine Bush High School senior is facing expulsion from the Ulster County school after a security guard spotted Phelps' musket replica in the back seat of his car parked in the school's parking lot.

The 17-year-old -- who joined the school's Civil War Club after seeing a school-sponsored ad encouraging students to get involved with the group -- was called down to the assistant principal's office Tuesday, where he was told that a weapon had been spotted in his car.

Also found inside the vehicle during a search by school officials was a bayonet, rolled cartridges with black powder, and a Union soldier's uniform.

"I actually thought it was kind of stupid, at first, when I heard it was about the musket," Phelps told the Times Herald-Record of Middletown, which first reported the story Wednesday. "I didn't think I'd get arrested over it."

But that's what happened when Town of Crawford police showed up at the school, where they not only confiscated the musket, but handcuffed Phelps and charged him with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon, punishable by up to a year in jail.

Oh dears, what is this troubled teen going to do with this musket, fire smoke in my direction? How scary!

The only thing that got high was her voice.
But taking a puff off a helium-filled balloon while decorating for the Friday night junior high school dance was enough to get Hayley Hoffman, 13, suspended for five days under Gilbert Unified School District’s zero tolerance policy on inhalants.

Quote
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne said he cringes whenever he hears the expression "zero tolerance" in schools because "it often means common sense has been removed from the equation."

I used to live next door to a moron into Civil War reinactment who tried to kill a bee on his window by placing a powdered musket with no shot over the bee thinking the shock waves would kill it.  He blew out the window and the bee went buzzing merrily away.   :P

Maybe the cops should show up at one of the school-sponsored events with a paddy wagon and perp-walk all the future terrorists off to the clink.

Good thing they're putting these dangers to society in jail.  I dread to think of what may happen should thirteen year old Hayley Hoffman jump me in the street and threaten to talk like Mickey Mouse.

I read shit like this and am glad anew to have gone through school before all this nonsense started.  Even in parochial school I had a helluva lot more fun that these poor kids do.  :(

Something similar happened to this guy when I was in highschool my junior year.  Chip Ingram was senior who was arrested for having a machetti (sp?) in his truck.  Actually it was his father's truck.  Seems his parents took his car for some reason and they forgot about the stuff in the truck.  I don't know what possed campus police to go looking in the first place.  I believe the charges were later dropped.

I don't know if it's something that comes with getting older or if I was just more ignorant at the time, but it seems grade school got worse and worse after I left it.

That reminds me of those lame commercials for those things.

You'd have that girl who was trying to get a tampon and her teacher's like "I hope you brought enough for the entire class" like the old fag he is.

And then the other one where they say it's so small, you don't have to take your purse to the bathroom. Who would leave their entire purse in a classroom of highschoolers? The purse might as well start screaming "Steal me!"

Those are so annoying.

Post by: B E C K on Oct 31, 2004, 11:31:44 PM
Ha ha, I never thought of it that way.  (Leaving a purse for a bunch of highschoolers, that is.)  I just like that they're so conveniently small that they don't a lot of room in my pocket or in my bag.
Title: Idiots remind me
Post by: B E C K on Oct 31, 2004, 11:32:12 PM
And "pocket" and "bag" refer to actual things.  They aren't... like... metaphors for something else.  =p
