Title: I hate thinking up names...
Post by: The D on Aug 18, 2008, 06:42:40 PM
I'm glad I'm not having kids, I'd have trouble thinking up names for them. Although I think I'd name a daughter something like Becky, Evangeline, or Mackie, or something.

I'm trying to figure out an exotic character name for a character, and it may be nice if it can be shortened to Lee. In fact, is Lee short for anything?

Edit: it's not even a new character, it's an older one I called Lee, and I want to give him a full, exotic sounding name.

and in case most of you don't care about this thread or what I'm asking (which you probably won't anway), here's a clip of Bleach the Musical (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frsjHCqwkNI), with IDE's favorite character stealing the limelight.

Shit, go to any modern baby name site.  "Lee" is usually spelled "Leaighyiyighyiiyiyeye" or some trendy variant thereof.

Google is a really useful tool. (http://www.google.com/search?q=name+origin&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)

The bleach scene was great.

Well, I started thinking making up some long fancy Nobleman sounding name, like Lee Bartholomew Alexander Jenkins the Third or something crazy like that.

I remember someone made up a more complex name of their character by converting their favorite saying to German. It actually made up a really long but realistic sounding name.

Chelsey mentioned Leroy in another thread... and her link lead me to Leigh,  Leander, Leland, and Leonard (but that could be Lee too). She's been the most helpful to me for this. :)

I once had this exact problem writing a short science fiction story about xenophobia when meeting new alien cultures. I had so much trouble figuring out names for the aliens until I looked for foreign words for words that described them.

And I had trouble making up RP characters until I looked up African names and came up with K'tan and Devin.

LEROOOOOOY JENKIIIINNNNNNNS!

If you're looking for African (well, fictional African-American) names, listen for the list given on the twelfth day of Kwanzaa (http://www.shwiggie.com/media/12dayskwanzaa.mp3).

Devin is an african name?

It is if you double any letter after the 'd' and add an apostrophe.

Don't let him violate your rights like that!

Well I'll be damned. Netflix skipped both my last two Otome dvds and went straight to Hellsing Ultimate. And I feel stupid now, because I found out Alucard is Dracula backwards.

How easy is it to figure out a name just by reversing a word.

K'tan was based off an African name, I think Devon might be a regular name, but it does sound like a black name.

Edit: also LOL at the 12 days of Kwanza.
