I'm gonna go join the Navy. I mean, like, for real. Like, I already spoke to a recruiter and took my ASVAB.
It's a really good deal, though. They pay for everything I'll ever need, I work my ass off for four years or more. The pay is damn good, too, especially considering that I don't have anyone else I gotta give it to.
I'm gonna do some hellacious working out, though. If boot camp's gonna kick my ass, I want it to kick my ass marginally less than the rest of the saps there.
-
If my acting career fails I might join too. I figure combat has to be one of the greatest thrills out there. Plus I has a master's degree which means they'll make me an officer. I'll have my own Dai-Gurren brigade! I'll mold these socially awkward young men into level 70 pimps. We'll be stationed in tokyo and tear through the geishas like nobodies business.
-
Be warned, so may people I know joined the military for their education, and they come out with nothing. You have to be on top of it so they don't fuck you over. Vets don't get jobs in America unless they have the education to back it up.
-
In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)
They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit!
-
Congrats! One of my friends went in and is currently a Navy Seal, specializing in underwater demolitions.
I just heard IDE whoop in approval.
-
Dude, I could never be a Seal. My dad wanted me to go into the Marines, and I don't wanna do that either. I wanna go on a ship so that the only fighting I see will be 600 miles away from where I'm at. Hell, they put Marines on the ship in to off chance you get boarded, just to make sure the sailors don't have to fight.
Tom, thanks for the warning. I'm definitely gonna stay vigilant and ask as many questions as I can.

What happens when the expansion pack is released and the level cap is raised?
-
I'll just have to hope there's a war so we can grind out another 10 levels.

She's saying that she wants to live on a ship full of seamen.

All you have to do is apply for a federal job; any job. Vets get first dibs on everything. It's why I didn't get hired as a permanent fulltime engineer and project manager at the nearby naval air station. Two applicants, one was a veteran: done deal. Schooling and experience made no difference.
-
Vets get first dibs on jobs listed at the local government employment agency, and they get first dibs on programs there as well. I mean, I'm glad some of them went out and almost got themselves killed in the name of protecting our country, but not all vets see combat yet they all get special treatment.
The PBS special Carrier has made me think twice about ever joining the military.

Not if you're not qualified, many vets aren't being educated in the army or navy.

In the military, no matter what job you get, you're still busting your ass every day for at least four years before returning to civilian life. Even if you're stuck changing light bulbs of refilling batteries for the entire term of service, there are very strict criteria you have to meet every single day, from the cleanliness of your sleeping area to the length of time it takes you to shower, as well as meeting the demands of your job. It takes a lot of discipline to be able to take all that. Of course you wouldn't understand it, you whine about everything from headlights to monkey livers to shoes.
Anyway, I got my ASVAB results today. Apparently, I'm qualified to be anything but a nuke. Which is fine, because calculus is scary. Now I get to take my papers and pick a job.

Wait, isn't your masters in film or something like that?
fuck if I was going to join the armed forces, I would try to become a ranger, like my friend did! but i think they still don't accept women :-(
-
My master's is in Media and Communication studies. I could use it to get into a creative development position. I'll probably try to do that when I get out to LA if things don't work out the way I want I could always just rise to producer level powet and cast myself.

Completely unrelated, and because I don't feel like starting a new thread. Norbert the Black Lab of Awesomeness died today. Of heat stroke because, like and idiot, I forgot to chell the water til 9pm. When I found him, he was still alive, and I had my brother help me bring him inside. We dribbled water into his mouth and it seemed to be helping, but all of a sudden he just stopped. Moving, breathing, everything. He was only a year and a half old, so he wasn't even grown up by lab standards. We hadn't been letting the dogs inside because Miina's allergic to them and Norbert was sometimes overly playful and didn't always pay any attention to boundaries, though now I think all this could have been avoided had we just left the doggie door open and let them come and go as they pleased. I finally taught him to roll on his back, too. Total suck.
-
That sucks, sorry to hear it :(
...I don't know what I'd do that happened to me. I'd probably kill a few people randomly in a fit of mad grief.
Then Hera would make me do heroic labors to atone for it.
-
I've had two black labs in my life...Slick the Whitetail Tracker died in '92 of parvo at the age of 5, and Victor of the Large Gonads died in '05 of an acute vehicular contusion at the age of 13 (http://bonr.shwiggie.com/index.php/topic,2179.0.html). I don't know what it is about that particular dog that makes people love them like they do, but it's sure hard to let them go.
-
People love labs because they're the awesomest dogs in the world, period. Norbert was even cooler because he wasn't full lab. His mama looked like a big blond fox, so he had a gorgeous fluffy mane and slender build going on. He also loved to put his body heat all over people's feet when they slept, which was quite handy last winter, even if I did end up washing a lot of bedding.
Sophie the Chow Mix of Shy Sweetness got to come and go as she pleased today. We're gonna keep letting her in, and keep an eye on her water dishes, so she doesn't meet the same end as her hyper counterpart. Miina of the Pet Allergy is actually really happy she gave Sophie a chance, and is even talking about getting a harness so she can take the dog on runs, which is really really adorable.
-

I think retrievers, in spite of their outrageous shedding 356 days a year, give labs a run for their money.
-
Aww I miss my dear Scooby, my yorkie (I didn't name him btw). MIA, even with threats of sending people to jail, no one wants to tell me the truth as to what happened to my angel :'(
My next dog is going to be of the same breed as the dog in As Good as it Gets. I love that little fucker

You mean like a labrador retriever, often referred to as a lab?
-
i guess i meant, specifically, golden retrievers.
-
So everybody but Faye's talking about the same dog?
-
A golden retriever's not as much a water dog as a Labrador, but they're of the same mold.
I got a good score on the ASVAB back in high school, but I couldn't see myself working on reactors in a submarine on the other side of and under the surface of the world. But I wound up taking four semesters of calculus hell in the civilian ranks.
-
Taking the ASVAB was more or less as far as I got before the idea of joining just drifted out of my mind.
-
Our having 2 Lab mixes is why we've never seriously considered a pool. I can't mop up floors all the time.
Sorry to hear that, Bitch. :'(
My gay brother got into the Air Force and stayed for 8 years. I tried, but was turned down because of bad knees. I guess I could have gotten a desk job, but I said I wanted to be a pilot or bombadier. They couldn't help me, but they liked my attitude. :raiseroof:
-
I've heard that if you've ever been knocked out, you're be ineligible for piloting fighters. I could understand if it were a concussion, but I don't know. As many times as I got my bell rung playing football, the army might have been wary of putting a rifle in my hands in infantry, much less the USAF giving me a thumb switch for Fox 2.
-
The army wouldn't take my brother because his spine is curved, and they said he wouldn't be able to handle a backpack. It's ironic and hilarious, because he uses a longboard and a hiking backpack to make grocery runs.
Also, I had no idea how out of shape I was until this last couple weeks. I was proud of myself last night because I finally ran all the way around the block, and used the adrenaline from that to do five normal pushups. Marcus bought a weight bar and some five pound weights, and I've been having fun in the evenings creating slip and fall hazards in the living room after the air conditioner gets turned off. Now I have loose skin everywhere, and I'm hungry no matter what I eat. It's awesomely terrible! :D
-
I find it amazing that I used to do 300 push-ups, 300 sit-ups, and 300 jump-ropes twice a day before each two-hour football practice. I'd spontaneously combust if I had to do a dozen of either at this point.
-
So you got fat? Hmmm, how uncommon for the Deep South, a fat former football player. :tom:
-
Not being able to afford gym membership, I've been doing weight exercises and weight training about 2 times a week.
Not sure if it would do much good with my eating habits though.
-
Weight training doesn't do much if you want to lose weight. Even big fat guys can lift heavy stuff. No, if you wanna get skinnier, cardio is the way to go. Try going on long walks or bicycling or both. Before my last plateau, I lost like five pounds just by riding my bike everywhere. The fact that I don't have a car helped because it was kind of a necessity, but that's beside the point.
As far as eating habits go, those are easy to change, even when you're broke as hell. I spent five bucks today for the ingredients for an awesomely healthy veggie-noodle soup for four. If you know anything at all about cooking, try shopping at Asian markets. If you can ignore the cup noodles and candy, you can usually get about a week's worth of fairly healthy meals for less than fifty bucks. And make sure you don't actually buy junk food with the rest of your groceries. If you have to make a special trip to buy a bag of chips or a box of cookies, you're less likely to eat them.
-

And how! It's what happens after twelve years of extensive collegiate studying and primarily desk jobs all fueled by fast food and parentheticized by online message boarding.
But I'm third behind Rick and Bubba for sexiest fat man in America.
-
rick and bubba are the ones to beat this year. their girth... bliss.
-

I've seen current football players that are fat, higher than 250. They're usually linebackers and forwards and defense and stuff.
-
Steady employment can also help you lose weight.
-
Adequate exercise helps you not crave food.
-
Where'd you read that?
I eat more when I'm exercising a lot.
-
Ditto, though I just consume more whole grains and protien now.
-
Sorry, didn't think before I typed. I meant that I've found that when I exercise, I crave junk food like cookies and ice cream and chips a lot less. I do, however, have to eat a ton of pasta and veggies and beans in order to be satisfied.
-
Red beans and rice are delicious.
-
Ehm, so how did it go, Bitch? btw did I ever mention I'm part of the Air Force in Peru? I've never tried to get into that in this coutnry, but I'm pretty sure it's all about brains and vision(being the obvious important thing)
-
Not quite as well as I had hoped, but not as bad as I feared, either. When my mom homeschooled me, she didn't go through the right channels, so I had to get a GED rather than a high school diploma. The navy still accepts recruits with no diploma, but they only have a certain number of spots available, and there won't be any open until October. It's not as bad as it sounds, though - I'll need those two months to get conditioned for and to buy all the stuff I need to take with me to basic training. And even though boot camp will be two months near Lake Michigan in the winter, it's mostly indoors and I love the cold.
The crazy list of things females have to provide for themselves:
* 6 white bras (standard white cotton -- two should be athletic support)
* 6 panties (white cotton)
* sanitary items (as required)
* 2 white half-slips
* 2 pairs of pantyhose or stockings (skin tone)
* shampoo (in small plastic container)
* a copy of PAP smear if one was performed six months prior to ship date
* If currently using birth control pills, bring the pills and a copy of exam records specifying the type(s) of birth control pills both currently and previously prescribed.
I understand the need for me to bring the stuff, but some of it is pretty expensive. Anyone who's had to buy a comfortable, effective sports bra for anything over a B cup will understand. And somehow, I don't think they're gonna let me wrap an ace bandage over a regular bra as a cheaper alternative.
Edited to add - I got to stand on a scale today, and if ever I needed more encouragement, this is it: in the two weeks since I've posted this and the week and a half since I've started seriously working out, I've lost around eight pounds. It's really awesome, because I've had a lot of trouble getting under 185 for months, and now I'm under 180. Yay for being less fat!
-
8 POUNDS!!>!>! FUCK WOMAN! WHAT DID YOU DO!?!? (besides working out, cause i wont do that hahah! diet?)
It has always been my dream to be able to get into the army, but not just the normal army, the rangers. US or Peru, I've always wanted to be THERE, you know? no pussy-ass "ill see from behind the lines" shit. no, i've always wanted to be THERE. goddamnit, im jealous
-
Part of it loss of water weight - I rode my bike about eight miles before stopping at a store for more water, and they have a giant and absurdly accurate produce scale there. But other than that, I've just been eating a lot healthier. Also, it's been about a month since I last checked my weight, so I may have dropped a couple pounds in that time, too. I probably only really lost like 3 pounds, although my butt is starting to look a tad deflated on the bottom. Yay, butt deflation!
-
I heard a good heroin addiction can help you lose weight.
-
Yeah, but the military generally frowns upon that sort of thing.
-
Women don't belong on the front line. They distract the real warriors. Unless you're a great big burly amazon lezbo with a buzz cut. If you love bergina and can bench as much as I do then you can get my back in battle.
-
Eh, women aren't allowed to fight, anyway. We're required to learn to shoot guns, but the military does its best to make sure we don't get to use them. Women anywhere near the front lines are usually the drivers or medics.
