Title: Deathly Hallows spoilers allegedly leaked.
Post by: B E C K on Jul 17, 2007, 06:28:18 PM
How archaic! (http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/004923.html)  There are no spoilers at that link, but I find it hysterical that someone put a book on a carpet and took pictures with their camera 200-something times.

And from here (http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/ny-etpotter0717,0,684157.story?coll=ny-entertainment-headlines), interesting if true:

How plausible is this?  (Third to last post).  http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-deathly-hallows/confirmed-rumors-spoilers-46401/

If that's true, that kinda sucks ass.

EDIT:  This link's says the exact same thing, but better: http://www.zendurl.com/hallows/

Damn, I was seeing all the signs all over about the release this week of the book, and I was about to come on right now and post something about spoilers and stuff, and I see someone comes out and spoils the book for me, and then you make a thread, saving me all the work of starting my own.

What odd coincidences....

Here's a spoiler for you:

EVERYONE DIES!

Even better spoiler:

HARRY POTTER IS KILLED BY VOLDEMORT, BUT THEN VOLDEMORT DIES WHEN DUMBLEDORE APPEARS ALIVE AND BLOWS HIM TO BITS.

Ok, so every one of these are bullshit. But that's what the spoilers online could be anyway, bullshit as well. I certainly hope so for the link above.

A part of me wants to go driving past every book store at midnight and yell out the ending to the book. Another part of me wants to stay alive, let alone keep my health. And I'm not that big of an asshole.

As everyone already knows, Snape Kills Dumbledore. It was absolutely hilarious when people went around all over the place spoiling the book (especially at 4chan, where moot posted a background sound of the audio version of the spoiler).

I've never read Half-Blood Prince. And now it's spoiled for me. I know that Snape kills Dumbledore. How tragic.  ::)

...Ok, so what happens in the rest of the book?

Wow, One page in the entire book is spoiled. I'm scarred for life.

....So what happens on the other 800+ or so pages?

How does it get to the point where Snape does what he does? What happened beforehand? What were Snape's motives? How did Harry, Snape, and Dumbledore get on the tower in the first place? Why didn't Snape kill Harry (no witnesses?).

I've had part of the book ruined, but not the whole book. I have no idea how things progressed from Harry leaving the Dursleys and going to school, and then it ending up in a melee at Hogwarts and then to that showdown.

For me, what's important is the content of the book, not the ending. Sure, it sucks to know the ending, but I only know part of the ending, I don't know the whole picture. And the only way to get that whole picture is to read the entire book.

So I don't let the Dumbledore spoiler bug me. I don't know if these spoilers are correct, I certainly hope not. But if they are, I'm still going to enjoy the book when I read it. Because I'd want to find out WHY it ends like it does, if I know the ending. The ending of any book is only part of the story, what causes that ending to happen is the whole story.

So, go enjoy your book, and watch out for spoilers, and if you accidently get one, don't let it ruin the book for you.

GAH! I read that and I'm already sorry I did.

I am too, but primarily because it looks like it sucks.  But I guess no other ending could be expected.  If I really don't want spoilers for something, I just don't go online.  Not that some douche couldn't go shouting it out for everyone on the street, but avoiding the computer is a good start.

Mischief Unmanagaed (http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB118480434030171004-BINBfHH47RR87iqFz5kWSciB1MI_20070817.html?mod=tff_main_tff_top).  I love that title.  There are no spoilers in that article.  The part of interest is that Deep Discount DVD mailed out a bunch of books early.  Whoops.

Don't station-surf on the radio, either.  I'm trying to get a traffic report on the way in this morning and switch stations just in time to hear "....saw the page scan!  The last words EVER in Harry Potter are _________!"  :goddammit:  And I thought I was being smart by using Amazon so I don't chance running into a little shitling like a friend did last time who was running up the aisles of the store screaming "DUMBLEDORE DIES!" and laughing.

I have to disagree with Anne Frank this morning.  People are mostly assholes at heart.

I'd warn you about doing that, as you'll probably be beaten to death by angry fans. Even your buffness won't protect you from rabid nerdy HP fangirls. They'll tear your limbs off.

Some Rite Aid in Detroit started selling the books early on accident.

That's really pathetic.  The most spoiled people are going to be kids.  Not that I like kids or anything, but why don't you just go around tipping old people while you're at it.  You should at least do fake spoilers.  You get the same reaction from some ppl and you wouldn't actually be spoiling anyone.  I just don't see the point in doing something like that other than being weak.

I'd do fake spoilers but I've still heard fans say they'll kick the ass of anyone who spoils it, fake or not. You're taking your life into your hands doing that. One on one is one thing, but when you have an army of angry fans... you better know some kung fu.

Finished: 8:47 PM yesterday

Was spot-on right about something quite important I had been theorising since book 5 and to which everyone said, "HA! No way!" or some variation thereof.  Maybe too easy for me to guess since I've seen a comparable RL situation played out far too many times; not to say JKR had this in mind when she wrote it, but then again, if I'm correct about something in her life, I think she may have seen it too....

You know I got this book on Sat and I'm a pretty good click into it and I just realized that none of these books takes place in the present day. In fact if the tombstone Harry visted and the letter he read where right. Deathly Hallows takes place in the year 1997. Cause it looks like Harry was born in 1980. I guess she used the used the year she startred writing it (1990) and went seven years from that point.

Oh and the fact it took her 5 years to finish the first one makes me feel a litte better that I've been working on my first book for 3 and it's still not done.

I started it around sevenish last night when I was able to wrangle Merla's copy not intending to read it all the way through, but then I picked it up again about 9:00 and finished it at 5:00.  It moves fairly quickly, but I have to admit all the nonsense happenings in the tent were bogging down the speed of it.  I see a lot of the tent crap being cut out of the movie version.  It will also be interesting to see exactly how much screen time Radcliffe and the other two will get, seeing as the use of Polyjuice potion runs wild in this one.

I wrapped it up myself today. It does move fast. I got in a car accident Sat afternoon....and and despite filling out Police statments and about 20 calls back forth with the insurance company all weekend while nuring a sore neck and a brusied shoulder,  I was still able to get through all 700 plus in like two and half days.

Kinda happy that some of the spoilers I read turned out not to be true, but a lot of them did.

There was a lot of "Going nowhere" in there that could have been cut. That could have easly been a 300 page novel if you took out the stuff that didn't advance the plot and didn't add character devolpment. But she did that most of the other books, so it's kinda a trademark I guess. And it seemed she was trying to shoe horn everyone in from all past books.

I read the timeline of Harry Potter on Wikipedia, which states that the books seem to take place during the mid 90s, and that Harry was born around 1980-81. The first book is set in 1990-1991 or so.
Title: Re: Deathly Hallows spoilers allegedly leaked.
Post by: Rama on Jul 24, 2007, 01:27:15 AM
The date of death on Harry's parnets grave is Oct. 31st 1981. Harry was suppose to have turned 1 the July before his parents where killed, so he would have been born in July 1980. In Deathly Hallows Harry turned 17. So it must have taken place in 1997, but I think it ends in 1998 though since we go past Christmas while he is still on his quest.

And you know when I started reading this book I assumed the Death Hallows was a place, and I was wrong.

I screwed the pooch on that as well, Rama.  I had speculated that V would confront Harry on October 31 (All Hallows Eve) to be a bitch as that would be the anniversary of his parents' deaths.  No Guinness for me for not remembering the 6 Hallows of the Tuatha de Danaan.  :keelover:

I'm hearing rumors that there will be a sort-of 8th book in the form of an encyclopedia/compendium to address all the things that were allegedly going to be covered in book 7 - nothing earth-shaking, but curiosities as well as things that JKR herself said that we would find out; por ejemplo:

What would Dumbledore see in the Mirror of Erised?
What was Dudley's worst memory?
What the heck did James & Lily do for a living?
Why were they so financially well-off?
With Gryffendor representing everything V hated, why no G. horcrux? (Harry doesn't count, he was accidental)
Since the Wand chooses the wizard, can a spell as personalized as a Patronus be cast with a strange wand?

And mine - what was Dumbledore's Patronus?

Not exactly stuff to keep one up at night; just things that make ya go "hmmmm...." ???

And it seemed she was trying to shoe horn everyone in from all past books.

Yeah, I got that feeling from it as well.  I also thought the Hallows was a place, but I think I was influenced by hearing a "spoiler" somewhere that it was the place Harry and Vold would duel.  I didn't think I would like the Hallows because one of the first reactions I recall hearing of the book was that the Hallows weren't necessary.  While I think she may have gone off on a small tangent here, I actually liked them.  They were woven into Dumbledore's past.  I just found it incredibly odd that Vold knew nothing about having a Hallow already.  I buy that he wouldn't care but that he didn't know?  It doesn't seem possible to me.

Q's for everyone:

And I forgot to add, I know this is morbid and all but I nearly LOL'd at:

Do you guys think that when the final movie comes about that they'll cast people to play the characters for the flashforward scene or will they just age them with make-up and shit?

I think they'll be the same actors. Most will be in their 20s at that point. By the time this movie gets made, I think it'll be harder to convince people that Harry is 17, then it will be to convince them he is 36.

Quote
  • Does anyone else get confused with how she writes dialogue?  She'll write like this:

    Quote
"What is your decision?" asked Lupin.
Harry walked over to his friends.
"I'm not going back to Hogwarts."

And that last line of dialogue is suppose to be Harry's.  I'm used to doing this:

    Quote
"What is your decision?" asked Lupin.
Harry walked over to his friends.  "I'm not going back to Hogwarts."

Once you get used to it, it's not so bad but are both forms acceptable?  The way I write, if the first snippet was mine then that last line of dialogue would've been Lupin's, not Harry's.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It does make it confusing.

Quote
  • I hear all the time that's she so very descriptive.  Does anyone agree with that assessment because I find her kind of vague on a lot of things.  Not that I want to get bogged down with overdescription, it just feels like she's as descriptive as any other decent writer would be-- not any more of less.

I don't think she is descriptive at all. Like the above example. I would have wrote it like this:

"What is your decision?" asked Lupin.
Harry looked up at his one time teacher and mentor. His face started to  show his inner doubt as he looked into the the man's pleading eyes, but slowly a new cold and  hard detrimation came over him as he made up his mind. He turned away unable to see the disappointment in Lupin's face as he delievered the decsion.
"I'm not going back to Hogwarts."

But that's just how I roll. Course if I had wrote it I wouldn't have spent most of the 2nd act hanging out in a tent.

We're not the only ones to wonder at her writing style. There's some ongoing confusion as to who had the tears in his eyes when Snape cast his Patronus spell in front of Dumbledore due to the phrasing - don't have the book at work, but it's in the "Prince's Tale" chapter.

I'm wondering if the movies have influenced her dialogue writing a bit.  If the scene & line stays in the DH movie, I can so hear Maggie Smith saying, "We teachers are rather good at magic, you know."

Title: Re: Deathly Hallows spoilers allegedly leaked.
Post by: Rama on Jul 25, 2007, 04:05:52 PM
Her action, at least in this one, is a little confusing. I think she was trying to go for the "Oh some much is going on! What's happening!" kinda thing, but it just comes out as "uh...how the hell did that happen." And she also uses the same "Everything went black" to describe when Harry is knocked out, and when they Transport themselves someplaces else (I forget the exact term they use in the books.) and since both are usually done while they are under attack it leads to some confusion on which exactly happened, until it's established which did happen.

That's what I was thinking.  Merla thinks they'll cast older actors, but all Radcliffe needs is a little beard action and he's almost good to go.

Rumors are right - JKR is going to do an encyclopedia from all her notes - good.

So funny - she's getting all cheesed about people calling Snape the hero of the story.   Instead of being happy that she's created a memorable character, she's going on about him being fun to write, but that he was a horrible person, not heroic at all.  Ahem... Jo dear, what you created is a Byronic hero:

self-critical and introspective
struggles with integrity
a distaste for social institutions and social norms
being an exile, an outcast, or an outlaw
a lack of respect for rank and privilege
a troubled past
being cynical, demanding, and/or arrogant
often self-destructive
troubles with sexual identity
loner, often rejected from society

none of which precludes one from rising to the occasion.  You're wealthier than the Queen - quit fretting about who readers like and be content.  :fingershake:

Is she really getting cheesed?  That's hilarious.  Snape's the one that made the ultimate sacrifice (as stoopid as I think it sorta was).  Harry went on to "Happily Ever After", I don't see what's so heroic about that above Snape.

That kinda sounds like the kind of hero I'm trying to create for my book series. Introspective, kinda quick to anger, a bit moody, mostly a loner, troubled childhood, cynical, outcast, distaste for pop culture, wears lots of black, hates authority, and has no problem killing anyone who gets in his way.

I wonder if I can pull that character off right.

Actually I thought the act was rather sad.  I was laughing at you, IDE!

I have the feeling he doesn't really distinguish "laughing at you" and "laughing with you".

Wait...people can laugh "with" you?

Yeah.  Merla does it with me all the time when we laugh at people.

So I read it all last night.
It was.....solid. Not spectacular, but solid. It was kind of nice to see Harry stop being all angsty and go "FIGHT'S ON, BITCHES."

Yeah but he was stoopid for saying Voldemort's name when he had already been told it was hexed or whatever.

Indeed.

Oh There was more stupid parts than that.

SPOILERS BITCHES

Wormtail's sudden act of asphyxiating himself. I didn't really get that.
Why Voldemort didn't try setting Harry up with the Mind Viewing like LAST TIME....
Dobby the House Elf kicking ass and taking names and then getting shanked.
Expilliarmus killin' ol' Voldy.

OH and the lack of any really COMPETENT Minions. Seriously.

Viewing the earlier movies is a little more depressing.  Especially Chamber and Azkaban, where I can point to the screen and be all "he dies", "he dies", "he dies"....  At one point there were three characters on the screen and I looked up (I watch it when working on stuff sometimes) and sighed, "Goddammit, they all die."

  • I don't recall.  Someone else needs to get that one.  But I know the reason was given somewhere.

I thought it had something to do with Dumbledore showing him how to block Voldermorts thoughts out. Even though he didn't do it through most of the book, Voldermort might have assumed that avenue was closed to him and not tried to invade again.

I thought it had something to do with Voldemort not wanting the path open for whatever reason.  But like I said, I really don't recall.

But Harry was using that path. He was seeing what Voldermort did through most of the book.

There was nothing sad about it!  You people and your need to actually see what's going on in a video, peeeshaww!  My spoiler video is probably #1 in France in Germany!  And on the radio here for that matter.

Maybe if it was a better video but it's not.
