Title: Anyone seen "Transformers" yet?
Post by: Bernie AKA on Jul 06, 2007, 03:24:14 PM
There's a mystery movie trailer preview with no title and everyone is trying to figure out what it's for.   Some shitwit chick on the radio this morning said she'd heard it was either another Godzilla redo or Voltron, but had no idea what Voltron was.  ::)

I saw it at Botcon last Thursday, so I didn't get any trailers.

So, I suppose I can't help you.

They are planning a Voltron flick, but I doubt it's far enough along for a preview.

This movie is a solid action flick even if you don't like transformers.

Plus I took an 18 yr old girl who knows virtually nothing about transformers.

And she said "The flames on the truck were too much it was like mexican style"

THERE IT IS!

COLLEGE FEMALE DEMOGRAPHIC AGE 18 and EVEN SHE KNOWS THAT THOSE FLAMES AREN'T SUPPOSED TO BE THERE WITHOUT EVER HAVING SEEN THE ORIGINAL PRIME.

If that isn't proof that they suck I don't know what is.

Its as close as Ive ever gotten to an orgasm while watching a movie while I wasn't also masturbating.
Its like seeing an old friend you loved come out of a coma after 20 years and say hi.
It was good.

Prime was a badass. And Ironhide was too. In fact all the Autobots were badasses.

It was a good movie....

As for the trailer, I don't know. It looks like it's supposed to be out later this year.

While I can't say it was "Shit" as i havn't seen it. After seeing the trailer, looking at the desgins, reading the leaked script, and then confriming that script by reading the comic adaption I can say I have zero desire to see this film. It seemed to me that after you got past the "Wow...big robots!" part there isn't much of a story under it, what story there is, is a cliche one.

Well, either this mystery trailer is for a Lovecraft movie........

Or it's "Left Behind The Movie: Giant Robo Jesus Kicks Satan's Ass For The Last Time".

You also get stupid sophomoric humor dumped onto every scene.  The movie takes itself as seriously as 'Batman and Robin' did.  I only appeals itself to the lowest common denominator of movie-goers and I find it sad that people are buying into it for repeat viewings.  There is so much product placement, it makes 'iRobot' look like it had none, so many ads, they should be paying YOU to see it...

Worst of all, there is absolutely no real character development for the robots.  Our two inept writers, Kurtzman and Orci had no idea how to write for them.  So we get this crappy "a boy and his dog" story for Sam and Bumblebee and the rest of the robots act like bumbling oafs, unaware of civil behavior despite scanning the entire Internet.

Did I mention that Jazz's first line is "what's crackin' li'l bitches?!"  How far society has come.  :puke:

Time for counterpoint.

The movie is all about the giant robot action.  Anyone expecting Shakespeare or Citizen Kane is being totally unrealistic, but if you think this is all silly and insubstantial, remember the source material.  Also consider that much of the movie circles around the Transformer-to-teen relationship for the first half.

I did not like the mechanical designs, and having seen the movie, I'm still not a fan of them.  But they do work, and work well.  Five seconds into it, it ceased to be an obstacle for my enjoyment of it.  While somewhat hard to tell apart given the shooting style (quick cuts spliced together don't work for me), they are convincing on-screen.

As for product placement...talk about fucking ridiculous.  Seriously, this is about the most fatuous quibbles I've heard anyone come up with.  It has more to do with people's irrational hatred of Michael Bay and the "he sold out!" mentality that's only in vogue if you're a "free thinking" college puss.  As if we live in a world that's not overflowing with branding...it makes sense to see Nokias and Mountain Dew machines randomly.  But, to close this one off, who can question the sheer awesomeness of Dispensor?

Taking itself too seriously?  I wonder if you saw the same first half I did.  The Decepticons came across as a real threat, while the Autobots came across as peaceful and having to adjust.  The already mentioned quip from Jazz makes sense in the context in which they learned the lingo, so just quoting it and saying, "it's stupid," simply doesn't tell the whole story.

With regards to character development, I agree that they weren't personalized much.  But while more personality would have been nice, it's because of the perspective in which it was presented...the human one.  Otherwise, the movie appeals only to fanboys and flops hard.  This is what the sequel's good for.  On the good side, Sam's a good character, whose interactions with Bumblebee, Barricade, and Optimus Prime represent the best non-action aspects of the movie.

When all's said and done, it's not going to be in the top ten of the greatest movies of all time, and not even in the top hundred.  It could have been better, but to say it was total shit is merely one person's opinion.  In this (very prejudiced against it beforehand) person's opinion, though, it was a whole lot of fun and well worth the ticket price.  I'm taking my nephews to see it this weekend, so that's another $20 it'll get from me.

Some positive word of mouth kinda made me want to see it, but the more I hear about the attempts at humor, the more discouraged I am about seeing this movie.  Am I to understand that a robot pees on someone?  How clever.  The product placement doesn't help either.  I had never seen iRobot until Merla got it on dvd (because she has a chick-boner for Will Smith) and all the product stuff was distracting.  Everytime Will Smith's feet were on the screen, I'd be all "Werd!  fukkin' vintege Cons!!21rfkelw"  The funny thing is that I realize the reality that necessitates product placement, I just think most people are lazy about how to work the product in.

So I think I'd still see it, but I don't live as close to a good theater as I used to.  That and ruder theater-goers make going to the movies a chore that has to be well worth my time.  I may stick it in the Netflix queue when it's finished its run.

I didn't even realize Op had flames until I saw that pic of Gwynn next to it over at the Powet forums.  Flames are totally Mexican.  They should've just used his trailer for the product placement.  That's where it belongs.

See it on the big screen, unless you are just dead set on hating it before you go in chances are you will enjoy yourself and not want your money back.
I really didn't notice the product placement, maybe the little bit about Nokia but they werent shilling it, merely discussing what country made it. If you don't know a damn thing about cars like me, you wont notice the GM stuff. its not anywhere near as bad as the I Converse Robot movie.
The writers did write more dialog for the transformers, but it got cut, hopefully will end up on the DVD, but really I think Starscream is the only one needing more.
If anything watch the movie for Barricade.

Given that the movie's main attraction is about the spectacle of giant robots duking it out on a big screen, a lot will be lost in the translation.

Yeah, I can imagine.  Part of the reason I may still see it in a theater.  But usually enjoyment of that sort manages to be hindered by the audience anyway.

"LOLZ I'M MIKEL BAY AND JERKY CAMERA ACTION SCENZ LIEK TOTALLY RULEZ!!!1111 IT ALL LIKE IMMERSES YOU IN THE MOVIE N SHITS!!!1"

I went last night to see it, and the theater was about 3/4ths full. But every time I wanted to complain about some problem in the movie (like the jerkey camera syndrome), Optimus Prime would speak with Peter Cullen's voice and I'd get all misty eyed and forget all about the errors in the movie. AND I'M NOT EVEN A HARDCORE TRANSFORMERS FAN!!!

The fact they used the original Optimus Prime voice validated the entire movie for me.

The Section 7 guy was about the most annoying character in the entire movie. Even the fat black hacker was better.

Also, I remember thinking, when Sam was running into the abandoned building, that it reminded me of an abandoned building in Detroit. According to IMDB, the location was actually the Michigan Central Depot in Detroit. So I was right.

Today's the first day for Harry Potter, so when we left the theater at 10:30pm, there was a very long line of people wearing hats, scarfs, robes, ect... to see the 12:01 screening. I laugh at those freaks.

Edit: Hugo Weaving was Megatron? Oh god, that just upped this movie a couple notches on my movie ranking list.

I must be blind to product placement though, unless you're talking about the vehicles the Autobots choose to mimic.

Oh yea, if anything sucked it was the movie theater. During the battle on Air Force 1, the movie cut out and the lights went on, and then a second later the movie started again, but we missed half the battle. Where's my fucking refund/free movie pass?!?!?!

.... The city the battle happened in was NOT Detroit. It seems Michael Bay hodgepodged the city in that movie from several different cities. The Michigan Central building (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_Central_Station) is actually located outside of downtown, surrounded by abandoned factories and squatters homes.

Here's some photos of the building (http://www.forgottendetroit.com/mcs/photos.html). Bernie and Tom might want to chell out the other photos on that site, Detroit has a lot of beautiful abandoned buildings.

Time for counterpoint.

The movie is all about the giant robot action.
That's what I was expecting.

Then I got stupid jokes, and too much movie time wasted on unimportant human characters. Sam's parents, Sector Seven guy, Anthony Anderson (black hacker), and Maggie (blond hacker) each got more screentime and lines than most of the robots, like Jazz, Starscream, and maybe Megatron.

Oh, and that scene with the tank transformer (Brawl/Devastator)... I don't think we ever got a good look at that guy. He transforms while Jazz is on him, and then there's a confusing shot with Ratchet flipping over the tank guy and cutting his hand off (so I assume they've got him under control, right? And we can move on and not worry about him anymore...). Then the tank guy is not shown again, I believe... until the "I'll drive, you shoot!" scene. At that point I was wondering, "What the hell is Bumblebee shooting at?" And then a couple seconds too long later, it shows the tank guy! Like I knew he was an ongoing threat... I never even got a good look at him.

And it seemed to end pretty quickly... just as long as the opening to that Linkin Park song would permit. And... we get to see Sam's parents make cliched lines about government conspiracies!

I think this was a clumsy movie... The opening was great, though. Probably from the beginning to the end of the Blackout scene was pretty good. The robot action that we did get was neat, but I thought the fights lasted too short, and I was also expecting a lot more after the build-up that I had to sit through.
Title: Re: Anyone seen "Transformers" yet?
Post by: Rodent of Unusual Size on Jul 14, 2007, 11:18:21 PM
I don't disagree with anything you said..."clumsy" is a good description.  But despite the fact it could have been done better, the action was worth going to see it, and I actually liked Sam and the "boy and his car" storyline.

Linkin Park wasn't a problem for me, since I don't know what they sound like and I have no clue what it was they were responsible for in the movie.

*BUMP*

I finally saw Transformers today.  I'm with Zero and Rampy on this one.  I'm glad I didn't pay to watch it and I had a remote in my hand to watch the "homemade edited" version.  We get only two transformations in first thirty minutes.  And while we meet Optimus and the others before the halfway point, it's over an hour into the damn movie (which was longer than it needed to be).  There were too, too, too many humans and too much focus on the humans and their boring inconsequential relationships and none of the robots.

Spike was a jerk.  Bernie Mac was completely unneccessary and also a jerk.  In fact, a lot of the people were assholes.  Megan Fox has a damn nice bod but unless it turns into a Kawasaki Vulcan Drifter, I don't know what the fuck she's doing in a transforming robot movie.  "Look at me.  Tits and ass."  I would've rather seen more of the blonde hacker, who was completely uncreditable as a hacker but whatever.  They set up too many people's stories and then just let them fade by the end of the movie.  I don't get why anyone would have any need to see this over again except possibly for some of the sequences with the robots destroying shit.  It kinda picked up about an hour and forty minutes in once the Decepticons mobilize.  Some action sequences were cool but too many were sloppy.  The only thing that keeps the movie from being a complete POS is that it at least looked slick, evening though upon viewing, you find it really wasn't.  It's never a good thing when you find yourself saying after a film, "That could've used more Anthony Anderson."  FTW.

Also, I liked the Frenzy robot.  And Starscream.  I was less impressed with the other bots.

They need a two hour long movie of nothing but the robots kicking each other's asses. Then it would be awesome beyond all.

Two hours of fighting robots would totally work.  Even if it sucks balls, it still has fighting robots in it fighting other robots who fight.  It's hard to lose.
