I think my car was broken into.
This morning I noticed a bag of mine was missing. Last time I saw it was on campus so I drove over, backtracked all my steps, and finally filed a missing item report with campus police.
Then when I got home again, a neighbor was just leaving and he mentioned that his truck had been broken into and he was missing some of his CDs. And the pieces connected.
Last night I had been moving stuff out of my car and into the house and had left the doors unlocked. While I was in my house I heard some commotion out my window but didn't see anything. When I returned to my car I didn't notice anything wrong with it. But according to my neighbor he saw some black kids checking out one of the cars in an ajacent lot.
The city police didn't want to file a report of a missing or stolen item after I told them I had reported it missing at the campus, gave me some bullshit excuse about not being able to file missing item reports in two juris-dick-tions, even thought it could have been missing in either one.
I don't care for the bag, but what was in it. A large-capacity flash drive was in it, with a bunch of irreplaceable files. So was a resume with my address and full name and phone number. Hello identity theft.
The neighborhood I live in is surrounded by apartments with college students, and greek houses, and most of them are upper class white kids. But I see the occasional begger or black gangsta walking around. The southern areas of this town have the worst ghetto of the entire county, the most crime-ridden areas, 90% black, and most of the people in jail are from those neighborhoods. And I'm about a mile from those neighborhoods. I bet you anything it was some wannabe-gangsta black guys under 30 who idolize rappers and think it's ok to steal to support their weed habit. Fucking hoods. Fucking rappers. Fucking black society doing nothing to stop their eventual downfall into savageness.

You left your car doors unlocked at night with your bag of important stuff inside when you're about a mile away from neighborhoods full of jailbird buddies?
-
You still have your Ipod right?
Then all will be well.
Mine is missing and some random person not involved in the theft(?) may yet go to the hospital over it

Agreed, you're an idiot. I keep all my imporant files backed up twice, and the ones on my flash drive are in a passworded rar blended with a jpg.

I think it would be hilarious if it turns out that 18 year-old you were mooning about was the culprit.

I personally tend to keep flash drives in my pocket when I'm on the move, particularly if there's something important there. But I don't think you're going to have to worry about ID theft. Whoever's hands it goes through are more concerned about the drive itself, not what's on it.
Anyway, on the bright side, you just learned the #1 and #2 rule of having a car on campus...keep that motherfucker locked at all times, and don't leave anything in there that you don't care if it gets stolen.
-
I think it got stolen at home though.

Yeah. They're especially not gonna want your identity when they find all the kiddie pr0n on it. They'll probably just erase it and use it for their own files.

USB lines?
OH NOES!

I concur.

Shit! I think they stole my socket set too! That's it, now I'm out for blood!

Well, it's like 10 blocks away, I'm in the middle of campusville usa, the only people around here are clones of IDE and hot white college chicks. I didn't expect the crackheads and dumbasses to migrate this far north, but the smell of rich frat boys must be too powerful a lure.
My car has manual locks... I chell the driver side doors but since I never use the passenger sides I never chell them, so maybe one of them was unlocked.
On the bright side I bought a 2gig stick for $20 on sale, and it has U3 software, which means it carries software you can download (like firefox or open office, antivirus, ect) and can load the software when you insert the drive. It has to be software designed for U3 though, I can't figure out how to get it to install VLC media player.
-
Nevermind on VLC.
I had no idea what U3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3) was when I bought the drive, I just got it because it was 2 gigs and was $20. U3 (http://www.u3.com/) was developed by Sandisk and used by many flash drive companies to allow you to run software off the flash drive and even have the software run when you install the drive. The software has to be designed so that it either doesn't install anything on the hard drive, or if it does, it erases it when the flash drive is removed. The problem is, is that most of the U3 software available (which isn't much) is not freeware; you have to buy it.
Nor did I know that they have an open source flash drive application loader (http://portableapps.com/). They do have a portable version of VLC for it, as well as 7zip. Neither will work with U3, but you can still download them, install them to the drive... you just have to run them manually. If I had the choice I probably would have skipped U3 and used the open source version.
U3 does have one thing going for it.... you can have a custom windows theme (and wallpaper) installed when you plug in the flash drive.
U3 software includes:
Firefox
Thunderbird
Opera
Filezilla
Weatherbug
Skype
Trillan
PuTTy
Avast!
Open Office
WinRar (trial/buy only)

Mother fucker... those guys got more than my backpack!
Tally of stolen items:
- A $30 Backpack with
Few CD-Rs and DVD-Rs
512mb flash stick
important papers.... and a resume
- A tool case with screwdrivers, wrenches, my entire socket set
- Bike cables
- Several CDs including all my Disturbed CDs, although oddly enough they missed a few cds
and there may be more!
So probably around $100 in stolen goods.
And before you blame me for letting the guy get into my car, the car to the left of mine got broken into, the truck to the left of my car got broken into, and a car about 20 feet away had a window shattered and an expensive radio ripped out of it. This fucker went on a shopping spree.
The landlord's going to try to put up a camera to try to catch the guy again... If I find him I swear I'm going to call IDE and tell him the guy stole his iPod, and watch the blood fly.
I was riding my bike last night and I saw so many black dudes walking around in thei rbaggy pants hanging off their asses, and chains, and rags, in groups of 3-4, and I could have sworn one guy tried to sell me weed! When the fuck did this nice college area turn into a fucking ghetto. Get the fuck out of my neighborhood before I turn this place into the next 50 cent movie!
-
Thankfully, nothing's ever been yanked out of my car. Though when I worked at a hotel, about $70 total was stolen out of my locker, quite possibly by housekeepers who made more money than me. Bitches.
-
although oddly enough they missed a few cds
Maybe they didn't want your Manilow.
I remember being ripped off by a fellow employee when I worked at LJS. Once I mentioned the word "cops", one of the managers practically threw money at me. I think it's because my #1 suspect was her buddy, but whatever. My money was replaced.

When my apartment was broken into years ago, they had the gaul to pick through not only my videotapes, but my jewelry. Morons - took a sapphire & silver ring, but left the huge 18K gold cameo I inherited from my great-grandmother.
-
Oh geez, that shitty $30 digital camera I was going to sell on ebay was taken as well, and also my Lelouche figurine (http://www.rabbitinasuit.com/sphere/index.php?topic=1380.msg47126#msg47126) which was tied to my backpack. Oh these mother fuckers are going down now.
-
Someone gave it the ojo. Face it, nobody's going down.
Even two-something years after having the house burglarized, I discover new things missing everyday. I miss my grandpa's hat the most.
-
next time you have the opportunity to steal from or otherwise screw over a stranger in some way...take it.
This way when something like this happens to you, which it inevitably will, you can say you had it coming.
-
I have enough coming as it is. I don't need any more!
