I stumble upon a video about the Shanghai maglev train (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-54gBLwK3s) while on youtube. The train's capable of a nice 270mph/430kph. I wondered if this was the fastest train, but I thought I had heard something about the french train beating some record this year.
In April, a modified TGV reached 357mph/574kph. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJfDWtbioEM) But that's still not the fastest train ever.
A test maglev (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUKTY6xLoAI) in Japan hit 581kph in 2003. Here's another video at ground level. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPSd9GULjFo)
But since the TGV only travels normally around 200mph, and the Japanese train is experimental, that makes the Chinese train the fastest train in normal operation.
So much for the cold war.
Why doesn't the US have such fast as fuck trains? If the big oil companies spent those hundreds of millions in profits on train technology, we'd have shit like this, instead of being beat by the French, the Japanese, and the Chinese. And hell, even the Germans, since the Chinese maglev was made in Germany.
But us Americans love us some high gas prices and some 50 ton semi-truck SUVs.
Oh yea, I also got a 20gb iPod today... fuck a iPhone.

This has more to due with cheap fuel and cars everyone can afford. However I agree that we need a train system like this.

Too much Youtube.

But it's an uberfast train :(

And I have an uber-slow connection. Me, Squirrelly, Rama, and probably E.

If I have three hours to waste I might be able to watch one of your clips.

If I was emo I'd be cutting myself over this. I think I'll just cut someone else instead.
