Title: Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Post by: B E C K on May 11, 2007, 12:09:41 AM
More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gankutsuou:_T...of_Monte_Cristo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gankutsuou:_The_Count_of_Monte_Cristo)

Worth watching for the clothes alone.  The funky patterns move with the characters!

Merla and I are only on Vol. 1 though if Wikipedia is to be believed, there's six volumes so it won't suffer the dreaded "4 episodes on the first disc, three on the rest like a rip-off" syndrome.

It looks gorgeous - no colorist-needs-to-be-on-Zoloft issues, I take it?

The only drawback is how easily in love young Albert gets w/ the Count.  Or did I mean "unintentionally humorous"?  They should do more stories like these.

I Netflixed it because I saw a preview and was attracted to the animation.  I am also a fan of the book.  I like what I have seen so far.  The story moves pretty quickly and doesn't drag. The only thing I find disturbing is Albert's crush on the Count.

I'd netflixed the first four volumes, but I didn't watch anything past the first couple eps when I first got them because I was already backlogged with stuff to watch.  But the whole thing is absolutely beautiful.  I want to finish this series before I get into Le Chevalier D'Eon.  Thank goodness for DVD Shrink!

I'm a huge fan of Monte Cristo anything (the sig quote's from the 2001 movie of it), after I read the book as a 6th grader. The book's better than most of the movies. But the anime does pretty good justice to the story. I almost came on myself when I found out they had done an anime of one of my favorite books.

I really like how fast and smoothly this series moves.  I hate watching filler-- aside from Saiyuki, but nearly all of that IS filler.  Those bitches ain't ever gettin' to India.

My sig references a scene late in the series.

** Spoiler **

Eugenie is being forced to marry Cavalcanti in an arranged marrage, but right before the vows, Al, Frantz, and Lucein crash the party, and while they distract the guards, Al fights Cavalcanti and then grabs Eugenie and jumps out a window with her in his arms. After that scene I said "Wow, Albert finally grew some balls of steel!"

.... Ok, so maybe there wasn't any bullet dodging in the anime.

But it's the most romantic scene in the movie, with Albert flexing his manliness and Eugenie fawning over him, and it was the first time Al stopped acting like a child and acted like a grown man, and took care of business and stood up for himself. I'm sure the Count was watching the whole thing, and thinking "See, all that buttsecks we had gave you the strength to stop being a pussy and start being a real man."

Woohoo!  This is airing on ImagineAsia TV every Tuesday, which I now have with Comcast replacing Time-Warner.  Jumped into it at ep. 21, but I like it.  ;D  And J.J. Burnel from the Stranglers doing the themes!  Surprised he hasn't sold "Bring on the Nubiles" for the theme to any number of animes. :raiseeyebrow:

Yeah, the opening and closing are godly.  Also, I want to poop on Time Warner.   :poo:

We've been Time Warner as long as I can remember.  I don't think they have run of the whole city though.

Now we have no cable or anything.  It's really not that big a deal.
