Well I got back from seeing Spider-Man 3 a few hours ago. I went to a late showing at a theater that most people don't know exists to avoid crowds and I did ok. Theater was even full. I was happy about that cause all the other showings at were sold out at the other theaters. The fewer loud annoying people with cell phones I had to endure there better.
I'm just going to start off and say that this wasn't a bad movie. It was ok. The problem is that when it's compared with Spider-Man 1&2 it falls pretty short. And after watching it I have to say that wasn't the script, or the director or the acting that made it a bit disappointing. It was the simple fact of having too much information in one film.
First off we have three villains, which strays from the one per film of the past. We have "New" Goblin, in the form of Harry. Now his outfit leaves much to be desired. It looks like Green Goblin went to the X-Games and won first prize. Don't know what was wrong with the Goblin outfit from the first movie, but whatever. Then we have Sandman, which was done pretty well. He got the most development over the course of the film and makes me think that at one point in this scripts history he was suppose to be the only villain. Then we have Venom. Who was also done well, but severely rushed given he only shows up in the last third of the film. He goes from origin to full out super-villain plan in a matter of a few scenes. He has no film time to develop into a villain like all the rest of the Spidey baddies have in past films.
This movie was just too full of stuff, and it came across as haphazardly thrown together because of how much had to be covered. We went from Pete's life is great, to Harry wants to kill him, to OH Harry forgets that Pete is Spider-Man, to MJ gets jealous of Gwen Stacy, to Marko gets turned into Sandman, to Eddie Brock is trying to steal his job, to a strange meteorite falls out the sky and black goo tags along on Pete’s Moped. And that's all just in the first act. It's just as clutter in the other two acts as well. This film as the exact opposite problem that "Dead Man's Chest" did. Where as that film felt like there wasn't enough in it to justify a movie, this one feels like it should have been stretched over two flicks. I figure that might have something to do with McGuire not wanting to do another of these though.

Wait for SM4 - it's already in the works. :P I'm going to see Bruce Campbell's cameo.

I watched both Spiderman and Spiderman 2 last week before seeing Spiderman 3. While I completely agree with everything you said, I still think Spiderman 3 is better than the first movie, it's just way too busy, which is what I feared it would end up being. Spiderman 2 is still the best of the bunch.
I personally think they should have introduced Brock becoming Venom, but saved their conflict for the next movie. Also, notice how Brock as Venom kept referring to himself as "I" and not "We"? That bothered me.

Maybe I'll catch this on tv whenever it decides to premier itself. It sounded and looked very so-so, and what you guys and others are saying pretty much confirms it for me. I'm not spending the time or money.
-
I liked this one better than 2 and not as much as 1.
-
The Sandman should have been eliminated from the script entirely, and replaced with the original guy just breaking out of jail. He almost kills him, and then realizes what he's done, then runs away.
I rather liked Venom, and the lack of 'We' thing didn't bother me because there wasn't enough of a bond yet, though the quickness of the evolution was explainable due to both entity's hatred and Venom's knowledge of everything Parker. I don't think Venom or Brock is dead, though. they'll be back.
I was a tad upset when Harry died. I wish he would have just been paralyzed or something.
Pimp Daddy Parker made me nearly pee.
-
I hope venom comes back somehow. I was thinking that carnage might take his place but I really want to see all 3 of them mix it up and then venom and spidey team up to stop carnage.
Edit: There also wasn't enough spidey vs venom dueling banjo style web slinging battle. They gave us like 6 seconds of that. Ridiculous.
-
They may pull off something about Brock and Venom bonding last minute, and while it would appear that both were destroyed, the little bits the remained were able to regrow into one being. Hence, "I" could become "we".
Seriously, if one Pumpkin bomb didn't kill Harry, why would one have killed the Symbiote AND Brock?
-
That's what I am saying. Plus, no charred Venom body. What they should do is: Marvel - Cyclops vs. Venom
It would fuckin own.

Totally agree. It would have worked better as a set up for 4 then trying to cram the conflict into this flick. You really didn't get the good Brock posing as Spider-Man and ruining his rep and all that jazz before they fight. What we did get was a newscaster telling us that they thought it was Spider-Man but it wasn't. Lame.
And yeah the "I" over "We" thing bugged me too.
I was a tad upset when Harry died. I wish he would have just been paralyzed or something.
Well they did give themselves a small out. When MJ touches Harry's forehead and says "There isn't even a scar." That implies that Harry has enhanced healing abilities given to him by the Goblin formula. In fact I bet his face would have healed without a scar as well given enough time. The amount of healing that had already happened was actually to fast given that the explosion only happened a few days earlier. The guy should have still been in bandages. The advanced healing is actually how Norman survied in the comics and retook the mantle of Green Goblin years after his supposed death.
I hope venom comes back somehow. I was thinking that carnage might take his place but I really want to see all 3 of them mix it up and then venom and spidey team up to stop carnage.
I don't know...they blew Eddie up pretty good. I could see the suit surviving, but not Eddie. Which of course could lead to Caranage. I mean crazed serial killer Cassidy is cleaning up the construction site during his day job and stumbles on what's left of the alien and it bonds with him. But I hope that's not the case, since Caranage was pretty lame.
I'm still hoping for the Lizard. They've been teasing him since the first movie when Curt Conners is mentioned by name, and then he is shown in 2&3, but still no Lizard. BAH!
-
Atleast the Lizard is in the new game...
-
Still....I was kinda hoping for a film adaption of the Torment storyline, but with Kraven instead of Calypso as the person that unleashes the Lizard on Spider-Man.
-
Heh, well Kraven AND Calypso show up in Chapter 3 of "The Lizard".
-
I know there are a lot of stories in Spider-Man, but will it still have any steam by 6? There's suppose to be at least three more of these things, right?
-
A big budget serial series would perhaps be a better medium for this.
-
Maybe this is their idea of a big-budget seriel series.
-
I can think of at least two more logical storylines they could do with villains they haven’t even used yet. We haven’t seen The Lizard, Mysterio, Hobgoblin, Kraven, The Vulture, etc...etc...
You'd just have to make them engaging in a way that hasn't been done in the franchise yet, which is the real trick to it. Cause it'll just start to get repetitive and formulaic, much like the Roger Moore Bond films where. If you can avoid that, then it should be able to do six films. Most Superhero franchises can, but don't because of bad management. Spider-Man 3 started to show a few of those kind of decsions, so I'd say it's up in the air if they'll make it.
-
I don't know why all the Marvel movies are becoming such cluttered marathons. XM3 was like a mutant Vegas chorus line. Are they trying to appeal to the gnat-like attention spans of kids ?
-
I think that's part of the non-appeal to me. "Let's squeeze in more faces! More people fighting! They don't really need a reason!" Everything's got to be a big clusterfuck.
-
X-Men 3 showed what a bad script and director can do to a movie. All of the good scenes were probably left over from the original script.
-
I still haven't seen that yet. Maybe if it comes out on TV and there's nothing else on. And I'm that bored.
-
I think X-3 suffered from "Last Film" syndrome. Where they go way over the top with everything cause it's going to be the last one in the series. I think Spider-Man tried that too...but then Sony green lighted 3 more...so there wasn't any need to do that. Oh well.
-
And it just made everyone involved look retarded. It could've been a really cool Spidey vs. Venom movie or something but nooooo.
-
There will be an X-Men 4 and two other spinoffs. X-Men 3 suffered from Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman holding their starpower, Fox studios not wanting to ceede creative powet to Bryan Singer's creative team, and an overall lack of interest in a movie with a story.
You can see the same thing in Spider-Man 3 with the whole Sandman thing, he was just out of place in the whole damn movie. No offense to him, but the movie would have been the same without him, and it probably would have worked better, but you can see how at one point it was supposed to be all about him.
Regardless, the Spider-Man vs. Venom scenes were awesome, and I await the sequal, because I know Venom isn't dead. If James Franco wasn't so blah to the whole series, I could see Harry coming back, but the whole cast's treatment of the series now (Harry, MJ and Parker's actors) just reinforces that the next film would probably star different people.
-
Spidey with an ascot. We can make it happen.
-
I still have some doubts about X4 happening. I think the Wolverine flick will happen, but I doubt the Magneto one will ever make to the theater.
-
WHYYYYYYYYYY because he's old and GONNA DIE? HUH? HUH?!!ojq2ol
-
The story of a young man held in a concentration camp who uses his special powet to break out and take revenge on the nazis.
Sounds too much like an actual film and not enough like a ZAP! POW! BANG! comic book movie which the wolverine origin is sure to be.
-
WHYYYYYYYYYY because he's old and GONNA DIE? HUH? HUH?!!ojq2ol
He can't...not until he completes The Hobbit or contributes his voice for it beforehand.
-
With as long as they're taking, it's like they're waiting for him to die.
-
The Wolverine movie is pretty much a given. Please, no Storm movie - I don't know how they could backtrack from Halle's Storm in da Hizzy portrayal to the elegant goddess. And a Mags movie would either be 90% flashbacks with another actor or a lot of digital facelifting.
There were plenty of feasable plots from the comics, but the scriptwriters have dicked with random characters so much that they would have to get a major rehaul as well. Anything with Jean would have to be a backstory, Robert Kelly became a jellyfish, Henry Peter Gyrich was shredded - I thought the first part of the Dark Phoenix saga with the Hellfire Club or something with the Sentinels and Project Wideawake might have made an interesting film transition, but that would actually necessitate some plot along with the explosions.
How about the Days of Future Past storyline? They could milk the shit out of the universal tolerance angle. :P
-
Grace Jones as Storm!
-
Well the magneto story would be all flash back apparently. Xavier and Magneto are supposed to be played by actors in their 20s.

I meant for Magneto, not gay-as-a-jaybird McKellen. Hmmmm...

My thoughts on Spiderman:
1. Go go Emo Peter! Now he can start his own emo band!
2. This thing REALLY needed to be 2 movies.
3. after all that shit the Sandman went through to save his daughter, we never see what happens to her. You would think maybe spidey can take some of Harry's fortune and give it to her or something.
4. What the hell was that thing Sandman fell into when he was transformed? there's no explination why they'd have a pit of sand with some glowing blender rods of doom spinning around.
5. Thanks Harry's butler... that info about how Norman really died might have been more helpful like... 2 movies ago? Before Harry tried to kill his best friend?
6. It's official. All three movies have the "love interest kidnapped by evil villans and used as hostage, save the actress, save the planet" bullshit. You would think by now MaryJane would be packing heat or something.

We declined movies over the weekend in favor of Spamalot. Actually, we declined a lot over the weekend in favor of Spamalot since tickets for both of us were over $150 but well worth it! :D
