If I have to read one more novel or text book I'm going to scream.
I really really don't know how I'm going to survive this semester. Every damn class I'm taking is expecting me to read a lot of shit.
First, there's my history class. I have to read one chapter in my book between each class, and since the class meets two times that's 2 chapters a week. Add to that I have to finish a small book on Roman life in 2 days. Throw in online articles and the such...
Then, add on to that my Lit class. We read 2-3 short stories every week, plus I have to read a novel every two weeks. We just finished with Huck Finn. We were supposed to read half of that in one week then the other half in another week. Now we have to write an essay about a theme in it.
Not to mention the other classes that have massive textbooks I have to read, 2-3 chapters a week sometimes.
Thing that bugs me is how each and every professor I have expects me to devote time to his class and ONLY his class, and seems to act like I don't have other classes that I have to devote time to as well. What's worse is that whole "for every hour in class you should study 3" bullshit.
Teachers fail to remember most of us hold things like jobs.
College fails in this universe. I expect major reforms in education, or it will collapse on itself.
-
Yeah, but you have the Internet. Look shit up. I don't read half of the stuff I'm suppose to read. Now that I think about it, I don't read even close to half of the stuff I'm suppose to read. Gawain and the Green Knight? Fuck a Gawain, I read a summary instead. As for history stuff, it's too early to tell how I'm gonna pay for that. I haven't read anything and I have a test in about a week. I'm just gonna cram on that, I guess. Government, I'm suppose to be doing readings, but I just watch some of the video, memorize the study guide questions, and go to the review sessions... I did all right that way for my Summer government class and I have the same guy for the Fall. So fuck a Huck, read as many summaries and study guides online as you can. Flip through the Cliffsnotes. Watch the movie.

Let me give you a list of things I have to do between my mother's days off. Since she doesn't have a regulated work schedule, some of these days off are closer together than others.
History, English - Study and write a 5-page report. Not just on normal, easy high school stuff, either. Right now, I'm comparing ancient India and Tibet. Not just the countries themselves, but the way of life of the two different peoples. To do this, I've had to look up religion and geography. The religion is easy, but you try finding a map of ancient Tibet. Then I have to put it together in a way that shows every little detail of what I've learned, and make it at least five pages.
Math - Two chapters each from my Geometry and Algebra books.
Literature - Mostly reading mythology from the areas I'm studying, which will get harder as the year continues.
I'm going to get a job as soon as I get my LP (you need valid photo ID before you can apply for a job in Kansas). My mom has already made it very clear that she won't lighten my workload when this happens.
So stop your bitching. You have it easy.
-
That's why I majored in Art.
-
I had to do more work as an Art major than I do now. Fuck an Art.
-
what classes did you have to take?

Don't mean to pull a Crazy with all the caps, but I copied and pasted those from the copy of my "unofficial" transcript. Project after project, many of them boring. The biggest pain in the ass of all was trying to get enrolled in the classes. A lot of times there was only one or two slots for a certain class and they'd fill up like THAT so I'd have to take "filler" so I could qualify for my financial aid. Bah. Those aren't all the classes I had to take, those are just the ones I actually did take and get credit for.
-
So stop your bitching. You have it easy.
dude i had to read more shit than that last term. you should be the one to stop bitching. if you dont like it, then drop out of college
-
Sometimes I regret never going to college. Then I read diatribes such as these.
-
Trust me university is even worse, especially Dutch ones

I'm not in college, stupid. I'm 16, I'm homeschooled.

I feel your pain. I majored in Graphic Arts for 3 years and hated every minute of it. A few years ago all of the Graphic arts classes I had to take were filled so broked down and took Painting 1 and never looked back.
-
So far I've had it fairly easy. College feels easier than high school, especially since my classes don't meet everyday.
It's just that they're so loooooooooong...
-
School sucks. Your point is right about teachers expecting you to only devote time to their class. It's retarded. They can't consider you might have to dedicate only 1/5 to 1/7 of your time to their class? Bah!
I assume the pottential for being overworked exists in essentially every program. Did computer engineering and it was just insane. You essentially forsake all free times. At times it got to the point where if I was not at school until it was time to sleep I was at home doing homework. Bah. Then you get a break and don't know what to do with yourself because you forget what it was like.
-
omg TDEC is the worse. poor engineers.

I have a crazy ass teacher, expecting us basically to read a 20 + article a week... not to mention normal readings, with over 20 pages of various written texts. Then a second who picked the most varienced of all medieval reading (6 books from the 12th century). Then the crazy welshmen, who fills up my time with notes, then has a 7 page paper due on Alexander the great and various pop quizzes...
then the easiest course, a freshmen level human bio class, which is kinda easy... but then my hardest fuckin class, a Human Bio lab, which is like dropping in the middle of HS bio... when she expects you know every fucking thing about it, but the teacher doesnt teach that!
"Today we will be using microscopes to examine cells and work out thier tonicity."
Class: "o.o what the fuck is tonicity?"
"You mean you haven't done this in class?"
Class: "No, she was teaching us about smoking."
"Well, you're just going to have to read your book more."
>.< FUCKING WHORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
It depends on the classes. Most computer classes I don't even bother studying that much. But all these classes are general study and they all suck. History is the only one that doesn't suck as much.
It's not that all this reading is hard, sure, writing essays is much harder than this, but it's that it takes a long ass time. There is a LOT of reading and I don't seem to have much time to do it.
For some things I can probably skim the book.
Today I was typing my essay for History, and all of a sudden, one of my classmates told me that we had a test today in Speech. Which was fucking insane, because we had a test last class. So I had to stop typing to skim the chapters the test was on, and I passed...barely. The summaries at the end of each chapter helped.
But for some other things I have to read a lot. For this History paper, I cannot get any info off the web, I have to get all my info out of ONE book, so I have to read that book. As for the essay that's due next week on Huck Finn, I don't know if reading Sparknotes is actually going to make it easier. It might, and then again, I might get an F. So I might as well just read (or at least speedread) the novel.
As well, the teacher wants us to start reading Of Mice and Men, and read it in a week or so, and then write an essay on THAT.
So it's tons of reading that i don't have a lot of time to do (with a job), and quite a few essays and speeches I have to write, and it's only the beginning of the semester, so I'm SURE it's going to get much more tough come October and November.
-
So why not got study instead of pissing about it? I know I complained about my workload, but I get my work done before coming online.
-
Oh, I study. But I am allowed to bitch, there are professors who think they can just make students read books without teaching anything. My World Civ is like that, and the second one is focused more on other books which are required for later instead of discussing books that we are doing now, and will be tested on.
I am just pissed about the lab, since FIU makes the students do it. >.<
-
I think I did good on the government test. Thank goodness the guy takes nearly everything word for word from the study guide. History is definetely gonna be a wing. I just hate studying. The good thing about being in actual classes is that if they actually do their job and teach and aren't hideously boring about it, I usually absorb it like a sponge. Except now three of my classes are distance classes, so I'm suppose to teach myself.... =\
And I think Bitch was talking to Doug, tom.
-
Well whatever >.<
-
Well whatever >.<
ha! you did the same shit i did!
at least i had a good excuse: it was 5am and i was drunk
-
Though not nearly as bad as a college load, I don't get out of the ordeal completely. October 7- 9 I'm in 8-hour classes for the Commercial Property & Casualty institute of my Certified Insurance Counselor designation (last part of 5! :D ) and have to pass a 20-page essay test on Saturday. I can't describe how incredibly mind-numbingly boring this will be. No recording devices allowed. And since Commercial isn't my forte' I HAVE to pay attention every moment during class. My butt is going to sleep just thinking about it. :(
-
DOUG! I've read Huck Finn and Of Mice and Men... though they were a couple years ago, I could probably still help out.
-
That's ok. I read it a lot more reciently than you did (last winter) so I know most of what's in it.
I think I'm taking Nuri's advice to heart on just skimming stuff. I haven't had enough time to read everything, so I've had to skim a lot, and read in detal the stuff I'm stuck on.
Most of the short stories I've skimmed and yet I got enough info about them that I could write a paragraph on them. One of them, Bartleby The Scrivenger, was so long and tedious and boring I didn't even read half of it and I still got the theme.
The bitch of a speech teacher pulled a test out of her ass this Wed even though we had a test the previous day. I aced it only because I skimmed the summaries at the end of each chapter.
My History essay had to be from one book and I had only read about 2/3 of the book, I concentrated on chapters that had info about my topic. It worked. I had to type 2-3 pages, and I had so much info I went through 4 pages and had to cut some stuff.
Now I have an essay on Huck Finn, and I don't have a thesis. I want to write about how Mark Twain had a dim view on human behavior and how humans can be cruel but yet there's hope, since the nicests people are an innocent boy and a black man.
For intance, you have so many mean, cruel, evil humans like Huck's dad, the feuding families, the King and Duke, that guy who shot the other guy, Tom's behavior towards Jim, and even people towards black people. And yet, even through all this mean human nature you have Jim, who's kind and selfless, and Huck, who wrestles with his consious and ends up doing the right thing eventually.
Gotta figure out a thesis to write this essay, it's much longer. :/

2 terms ago i had to read a 300 pages book about COAL. thats the most boring shit ive ever had to read. on the other hand, i know more about coal that prolly 99% of the population:-/
-
I have to write an apocalypse myth by Monday. It's to have been written in 300 BC, with the apocalypse taking place in 2600 AD. My mom has to be able to guess the region from my writing, but I can't give any definite clues. I can't use any existing dieties, and I have to use more than one, with some humans thrown in there for the hell of it. This is going to be fun to write, but also very dificult.
-
Now that's an interesting and creative assignment. Almost makes me wish I was homeschooled.
But then again, if I had treated my home the way I treated my schools I probably would have ended up homeless at a very young age.

She has to guess the religion, but you can't use any existing dieties? What, do you have to use made up gods? Then how can she guess the religion?
-
Values, stories. The roles of said Gods.
Marleene is a beautiful woman, and marries Leroy, God of Darkness. His brother Cleatus is angry, and uses his chainsaw to chop up Leroy. He then marries Marleene, but Marleene longs for Leroy. She goes around, picking up the Leroy pieces, and fucks him one last time. The coitus creates Jessup, who then takes revenge on Cleatus. In the battle, Jessup loses an eye, but wise ol' martin makes a new eye for him. Jessup now becomes the king of the trailer park, and later kings will be protected by Jessup.

oo i remember now, it was a book about the vietcong

I misread.
I feel pwn3d.
I'm also stuck on the Huck Finn essay, in other words on which direction to take it.
Even more pwn3d.
The History essay was much easier. I could post a copy of it for you guys to steal and plagerize and use for your own classes.

Many, many years from now, a great purple walrus will rise from depths we cannot swim, and he will look us in the eye and we will know his name is Paul and we need not fear him. Paul will lead us to a slightly warmer place than this, with a few plants and bigger fish. He will tell us with his eyes of his great hunger, and we will bring him a feast of plants and large fish so he won’t eat us. When his hunger has been satisfied, he will open wide his great jaws and let out a joyous cry – “Goo goo g’joob!” – that will be heard all over the world. And all creatures will be so moved that they will sit forever in such a deep state of meditation that they can always remember this wonderful sound. Eventually, everything will have starved to death, and Paul will start the world over again.
-
Ooo, Indian of some kind, with Nordic flair!
-
I would have the Walrus eat the sun, or puke out the world
-
Who gets to bash the walrus on the head?
-
I hate you.
-
I hate you.
;_;
-
Not you, sweety, Tom, for implying that we should bash a walrus on the head.
-
Learn your myths!
-

goo goo g'joob
-
There are many walruses in this world that deserve a good bashing. Some even enjoy it.
-
Walruses eat Penguins :(
Fuck them all, long live the Penguins!
-
Exactly. Fuck a penguin-hater. Fuck Shamu and fuck the sea lions.
-
But I thought orcas sort of were dolphins, or somewhere between dolphins and whales and not quite one or the other.
-
They are whales... that eat penguins.
-
Yeah, they stangle them with their mighty baleen.
-
Man, school is sucking a big one right now. History's easy, I got an A+ on my essay! ^.^ It's the english class that sucks...bigger essays. :(
So does my speech class. It's hard to think of good topics to speak about, most of the thing I want to rant about are probably not appropriate for class (like Bush sucks).
It would be easy if I could do a speech where I ranted about whatever, but I have to back my rant up with lots of evidence which limits my choices.
So I have a inform speech, persuade speech, and demonstrational speech. The Demonstrating speech is going to be the hardest because I don't know what to demonstrate that's "PG" rated :D .
I've considered doing a speech on Anime for the informational speech, but I don't want to end up looking like a nerd since certain members of the class think I'm one anyway <_<
I wonder what I should speak about......
....*notices that the topic has changed* Stop Hijacking my Threads!!!!
-
I had to design and build a rat cage today. It was cool because not only was it free, but I got to enslave Marcus and Miina to get it built. Miina sat on the side with me while Marcus put it together. It's cool, like one that would cost a lot of money, but it was free.
-
If there was only something I was good at besides computers...
...if there was something I believed in that could be researched....
there's something I can speak about....
...what does rat cages have to do with school? And why did your mother have you build them for school, if that's why you built it?
-
It's part of the child developement portion of her studies.
-
I asked her to help me build one, and she told me to do it myself. I don't have to do academic stuff on days my mom has to get up early, because I stay up to wake her up. This is because my internal clock always wakes me up at 10:30 or earlier in the morning, no matter what time I went to sleep, so I'm too tired to concentrate on books. Moving around helps me to not be quite so tired, so I have to do chores and stuff instead.
Short version: It's an excuse to get another rat. :P
-
But I thought orcas sort of were dolphins, or somewhere between dolphins and whales and not quite one or the other.
dude have u seen the movie "orca the kilelr whale?? my ass aint going near one of those bitches, heeEEeeEL no!
-

Sophomore year in speech, I gave a powet point presentation on Anime. But since it could only be 4-6 minutes long, I just highlighted some popular ones of different decades (EG: Astro Boy in the 60's, Sailor Moon in the 90's... I don't remember if I did Speed Racer because I think I cut the clip out. Totally woudl have found a .wav file of the theme)
But yea, apparently some kid last year did a speech on the KKK. Didn't go over very well.
-
In regard to the portion of Doug's post Chels quoted, if they already think you're one, what's the point of avoiding reality?
-
But I thought orcas sort of were dolphins, or somewhere between dolphins and whales and not quite one or the other.

*groan*
-
Because if anything accurately depicts a killer whale, it's a movie....! But really, who cares. Have you seen their mouths? They *could* bite you in two!
-
And will if you get close enough.
-
And if you subsequently kick it in the face.
-
You have to rub its tongue, and then it won't bite you!
Or run around on the deck and slip and crack your head open so it has to save you.
Didn't you guys learn anything from Free Willy?
-
I learned that whales don't suddenly ejaculate on people.
-
Dolphin ejaculate can decapitate you!

Tenticle pr0n sucks because it's not real, these dolphins really do have prehensile penises, they can swing from fucking trees!

Oh, look who's talking. You know damn well that trees are figments of all of our collective imaginations.

Damnit quit ruining my perfect world!

It's just all this talk about tentacles and dolphins

How the fuck does that get onto FISH FUCKING PIZZA.
-
I see you've never ordered a fish pizza in some of the restaurants in the more scenic parts of Rotterdam
-
....Dutch people suck.
-
I only eat fried fish. ON A FUCKING PIZZA?
-
Yeah, shit. Like sardines.
-
Sardines suck, and I'm getting the impression he might've meant a different fish.
-
I meant any kind of fish, the general motto is, if it swims in the sea it can fit on a pizza. Fish pizzas have all kinds of fish plus related animals like bits of squid.
-
Dear god, thousands of italians must be rolling over in the graves . . . possibly in hunger because I don't know if that would go against Italian tradition or not . . . but . . . wow . . . damnit, now it's starting to sound tasty.

Good ocean crabs like the kind that sing in "the Little Mermaid" or bad "transmitted" crabs?
-
Little o' both.
-
Ew, no!
