Title: Jill the Ripper
Post by: Faye Valentine on May 29, 2006, 08:18:34 PM
JILL THE RIPPER
Britain's Greatest murder has been unsolved for more than 100 will DNA tests now prove that the frenzied killer was a WOMAN?
THE case of Jack the Ripper, the killer who terrorised Victorian Britain, remains the greatest murder mystery of all time.
For more than a century top detectives have tried and failed to identify the brute who slaughtered five women.
The chief suspects - including a member of the Royal Family, a famous author, a doctor and an artist - were all men.
But new scientific tests reveal the astonishing fact that the killer may have been a woman.
Powerful DNA profiling techniques were used to examine 118-year-old letters sent by the killer. And the evidence they revealed suggests that Jack the Ripper may, in fact, have been Jill.
Professor Ian Findlay, a Scot based in Brisbane, Australia, pioneered the breakthrough.

He explains: "Our technology is leaps ahead of anything police have, because where conventional techniques need between 200 and 500 human cells to gain a profile ours only needs one.
"In the case of the Ripper, we tested the technology on real letters and obtained profiles from those letters. From what we could tell, it's very possible the Ripper could be female."
The Ripper's killing spree took place between August and November 1888 in the dark, foggy alleyways of Whitechapel in London's East End.
The time became known as the Autumn of Terror, after which the murders stopped as suddenly as was found with her liver between her feet and another with her innards piled up on a bedside table beside her.
Mary Ann Nicholls, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were in their 40s, but Mary Jane Kelly was just 25.
Scotland Yard was baited with 600 taunting letters claiming to be from the murderer.
Many were dismissed as hoaxes, but one, sent to Dr Openshaw and postmarked October 29 1888, contained specific details only the killer could have known about the removal of a victim's kidney.
PROF Findlay took swabs from the saliva under the seal and stamp of the envelope, as well as bloodstains on the letter, to glean a DNA "fingerprint".
Stewart Evans, a crime historian who has written five books on Jack the Ripper, says: "The letters that Ian looked at are the ones that we feel are worth looking at - the ones that are most likely to contain DNA, the ones that may possibly have come from the killer.
"Scotland Yard kept them under lock and key until 1961, when they handed them over. So we can be assured that they have not been altered."
Prof Walker, chief scientific officer at the Gribbles Molecular Science forensic lab in Victoria, Australia, was able to gain a partial DNA profile from the small and poorly preserved sample.
And although it is not enough to identify an individual beyond reasonable doubt, the results contained a shocking revelation.

The professor says: "This is the most sophisticated DNA fingerprinting they began. Five women, all prostitutes, were killed and butchered. One technique in the world, but the sample doesn't give us enough evidence to pinpoint the killer. However, there is an interesting twist because we do know this sample is likely to be a female sample."
One man, Frederick Abberline, always believed the Ripper could have been female. He led the original murder investigation and suggested that because a witness insisted she had seen victim Mary Kelly after her death, the killer might have escaped into the night wearing her dress and a maroon-coloured shawl.
His boss doubted that a woman could be capable of such atrocious crimes - but with all London's police force looking for a male murderer, a female killer could have walked the streets of White chapel with far less fear of capture.
If Jack was indeed Jill, what woman could have behaved with such chilling brutality? The chief suspect is Mary Pearcey. Born in 1866, she was brought up by her mother and elder sister after her father, Thomas Wheeler, was convicted of murder and executed.
In 1890, two years after the Ripper killings, she was convicted of murdering her lover's wife and their baby daughter - a crime that was to send her to the scaffold.
The double murder bore striking similarities to the Ripper killings. All the victims had their throats cut. Each was killed in private and dumped in a public place.
The question whether Mary would have had the physical strength to carry out the murders was answered by Sir Melville Macnaghten, assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.
HE wrote of her: "I have never seen a woman of stronger physique... her nerves were as iron cast as her body."
Mary, said to have "lovely russet hair and fine blue eyes", never worked and suffered from recurring periods of depression. She was a heavy drinker and spent most of her time in the company of wealthy men.
Then she fell in love with furniture remover Frank Hogg - but he was already married to a younger woman called Phoebe and had a young daughter.
On October 24 Phoebe called at Mary's house in Kentish Town, North London, after being invited for tea. At 4pm neighbours heard screaming and the sickening sounds of violence.
That evening Phoebe's corpse was found on a heap of rubbish at Hamp-stead, North London. Her face was wrapped in a cardigan, her skull had been crushed and her head was nearly severed from her body.
A black pram was found a mile away, its mattress soaked in blood.
Phoebe's 18-month-old baby was found dead, apparently smothered, in Finchley.
Witnesses said they had seen Mary pushing the pram around the streets after dark. And when police searched her home they found blood splattered on walls, ceilings, a skirt, an apron, a fire poker and a carving knife.
Mary insisted she had been merely killing mice. And while her house was being searched by police she sat at her piano, playing popular tunes.
When she was arrested and charged, she was found to be wearing Phoebe Hogg's wedding ring.
She constantly protested her innocence throughout the trial at the Old Bailey, but was convicted and hanged, aged 24, on December 23 1890.
Stewart Evans, a retired police officer, points out that there is still no hard evidence to suggest that Mary was Jill the Ripper.
He says: "The problem is that, no matter how progressive DNA foren-sics becomes, we can only work with the samples of evidence found in 1888.
"And the best piece of evidence, a blood-stained apron found near the bodies of one of the victims, hasn't survived."
But after 118 years and countless theories about the Ripper's identity, DNA technology still holds out the best hope of cracking the most baffling case in the annals of crime.
With London's police force hunting a man, a woman could pass unnoticed .

Intriguing. I've always thought that most people who claim women don't have the "Strength to perform such crimes" were stupid. You don't NEED a lot of strength to cut into someone. The biggest thing is restraining them.

I've heard this theory before, but.really we will never know for sure. A lot of people say they know who Jack was, From James Maybrick, to the painter  Walter Sicker, to  Prince Albert, I've heard them all in long morbid obession with the Jack the Ripper case but in the end you can't ever prove it.

Now show me a man who can tell me who Spring Heeled Jack was and I'll be impressed,Or anyone other then myself who knows who Spring Heeled Jack is for that matter.

Screw that.

I've heard about him too!
But I never heard him being catalogued as a man, but as a demon?

Ha Ha.... I didn't know it was so easy to give Nuri nightmares. Spring Heeled Jack is pretty tame compared to some of the other reported "true" stories I've read.

And Spring Heeled Jack was first sighted in 1837 when he jumped over a cemetery fence landing right in the path of a businessman who was walking home. He reported that the creature had devilish features, including pointed ears and glowing eyes. From then on Jack carried out several attack, usually on women, using everything from his "Claws" to spitting up "Blue and White flames". When the police found foot prints of Jacks they where several inches imbedded into the mud, suggesting that person had jumped from a great distance. But they also found evidence that there was a device of some kind attached to the boot, making it likely that Jack wasn't a demon at all, but a guy in a suit. The sightings slowed down and finally ended in 1904.

And a now a bit that'll fuel Nuri's night terrors. A similar incident was reported right here in the U.S. in 1960, with a man of almost identical description appearing in Bernie's hometown of Houston Texas. Seems Spring Heeled Jack jumped the pond and headed for the Lone Star State.

I first read about it in the book "Exploring the Occult" and then again in "The Vampire Book".

The story is as followed. A fine upstanding English family owned a nice, but small house in Cumberland. It was in a good neighborhood and the only draw back was that it adjoined the local Cemetery. The family however quickly outgrew the house and instead of adding one, decided to move to larger home and rent out the smaller one. In 1874 the rented it to two brothers and a sister. They loved the place and fit in to the community well.

Then one night the sister could not sleep and so she sat up looking out her bedroom window, which was not only on the ground floor, but also faced the Cemetery. Suddenly she noticed a figure standing on the far side of the lawn. It was a pale and skeletal looking creature, and worst of all it was making for her window. The creature moved with inhuman speed and was at her window before she could get to her door and hand knocked a pane from in and it open. She screamed for her brothers, but she had locked the door and they were unable to gain entry. Finally they broke the door down, only to find their sister unconscious in a pool of blood. The creature had escaped through the window and one brother gave chase while the other helped his sister.

The brother was unable to catch the creature, and the sister survived the attack but took months to recover. After being released from the hospital, the woman refused to be chased away from home and returned to the house. This time the door was to be left unlocked. Again the creature came to attack the girl, but this time her brothers where ready and they chased the attacker from her room to the Cemetery where it entered a crypt. The next day they entered the Cemetery and found the Vampire lying on the floor of the crypt. They removed it and burned the body. The Vampire never returned.

It's very easy.  Let's put aside my wild imagination and that I've was really scared of Freddy movies and stuff like that as a kid.  The Unsolved Mysteries music made me want to wet myself, as when I hear it as an adult my bladder still tingles.  And let's put aside that when I was little, I used to see figures walking in suspension in the dark.  Heck, maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me.

I think you're forgetting something.  My dad claims to have met fucking Satan.  My grandparents were involved in some mysterious fire that happened a party attended by an equally mysterious stranger.  My dad also claims his friend was attacked by Lechuza, the owl woman.  The house he grew up in is supposedly haunted in some fashion, with at least one ghost sighting and a ouija incident coming to mind.  Various people in my family have claimed to see a ghost.  I don't know whether all these things were imagination or people're on drugs, but needless to say I'm just a tad fucking afraid.

Even without having to hear creepy shit, I already sleep with a light on.  I'm scared enough of  murderers, rapists, and burglars.  I don't want to hear about things we can't give the chair.

I get creeped out by the stupidest damn things, like certain dolls.  I watched Eddie play Silent Hill 4 last week; no problem with the music, sound effects, ghosts, etc.  You can look into the neighboring apartment through a hole in the wall - the girl who lives there has a Robbie the Rabbit (http://silenthill.ugo.com/gallery.asp?img=30&gallery=silenthill_enemies_games) doll on her bed.  Look enough times and the damn thing will be sitting up facing your direction and pointing at you.  We have a large wooded back yard with lots of shadows at night - I was taking all five dogs out with me until I got over that shock.

I know exactly why I don't like dolls:  Thanks, Night Gallery! (http://www.nightgallery.net/index.html?pagemenu.html&1)

Speaking of Ebay, anyone remember the Haunted Painting (http://www.castleofspirits.com/hauntedpainting.html)? Actually the use of light & texture is very clever - at certain angles, the girl's/doll's face turns into a skull, the boy seems to edge away from her and the thing she's holding resembles a gun.

I didn't forget.... I remember being rather jealous of all those experiences as I've never seen a damn thing and I go looking for it. Well...I did see a shadow man one time when I was little, which sounds a lot like what you saw. A black mass moved over to the side of my bed and looked down, or at least I think it looked down it me...it got shorter like it was bending over. I just covered my eyes and when I looked again it was gone. That's the only thing I've ever experienced. But it does explain why when I was planning to come down and see you; you refused to go on those Ghost Tours with me.   I just didn't think it was THAT easy to scare you. I won't tell anymore scary stories. I promise.

In the last two pictures, the girl's/doll's face is very skull-like, the boy seems to edge away from her because he fades into the background a bit and the thing she's holding resembles a gun.

Paintings will change according to the light.  For years, I was terrified of a portrait done of my great-great grandmother as a child around 1867.  Nobody smiled in portraits back then and her face looked like a scowling middle-aged woman and became a skull in certain lights.  To compound the terror, it was a full-body painting and the damn thing was over 5 feet tall.  I got over my fear when I inherited it - unfortunately, it was stored in a closet during TS Alison and the water came up over the frame and wet the canvas.  When it dried, it split and disintegrated, right through the face.  That was fun to find - guess old Grandma Maddie just had to scare the piss outta me one last time.  :P

Futon city.  There is no couch here.

Good for you, stop those couches before they cross the border. Filthy beggars.

And the few times I've slept on Futon I've regreted it in the morning.

Eddie wound up on the guest room futon Monday night when the storms came through and the two pit bull puppies (almost 30 lbs each) got scared & wanted in the bed.  :P  This is in addition to a rat terrier and two cats.

Imagine reliving that fun every night!  I could've bought a bed, but my room's small so I wanted to make the most of the space.  Besides, I sleep too much as it is.  A comfortable bed would only make matters worse.

I like my futon.  I bet you could light a city block if you put it under a black light at night.

My living room couch is a futon.  I've slept on it and it's comfortable.  When 2 people are "lying' on top of each other on one end of it it has a tendency to tip which is... inconvenient.

I actually ended up getting the Monarch of all beds, the King size because all my animals wanted to sleep with me. The full size just wasn't cutting it and so I traded away my PS2 and all the PS2 games I had for this bed. And even with a bed I could sleep head to toe or sides to side comfortably on the animals find a way to make it uncomfortable.

That's ok.... I gave away my futon a few years ago and I don't miss it. It was falling apart anyway from being moved from place to place so many times. I think I moved 3 times in the span of 2 years when I owned that thing.

And my Bedroom use to be too small too. I had the full in there and there was about a 3-foot wide path around the sides and foot of the bed and that was all the extra room I had. But the room I currently occupy is huge and I have no space worries. I could probably fit 2 more king-sized bed in there and still have breathing room.

Damn, does it even give anymore when someone sits on it?  :P

Lucky man.  We're stuck with a full at present because we opted to take the smaller quieter back bedroom in lieu of the larger one with the windows facing the street.  The kid across the street has a 5' speaker in his trunk.   <_<

Yeah, but they always ask what that crunching noise is.

Just tell him you'll leave your curtains open on "certain" night, if he'll keep the noise down.

That must be awfully uncomfortable for both parties.

Isn't it required by law in Texas?

Give it three years. They'll try to repeal the gun law and we'll have another civil war.

I have an Enfield .303 which would go through the trunk, the speaker and probably everything for the next two blocks.  I have to think of the innocent pets.

And no curtain shows.  On a whim one slow day I looked up sex offenders for my zip code and one is registered to that address.

DOUBLE BLECH!  Well maybe he's just using that address and actually lives somewhere else like no one I know.
